CBS unsure if they will use gay dating site commercial

A website named Mancrunch.com is claiming discrimination because CBS won’t accept their Super Bowl ad.

A spokesman for the company said they were told ad space was full, even though that isn’t true.  CBS now says they need more time to review the ad.

Any decision to keep the website’s ad off the air will be compared to the decision to allow Tim Tebow’s pro life advocacy spot.  The Mancrunch ad features a harmless and somewhat jokey makeout session between dudes in football jerseys.

We were hesitant to post this for reasons other than the inevitable inappropriate comments that will have to be deleted.  (Be nice, please.)

Every year around this time, we hear about companies that have ads rejected from the Super Bowl.  They are often just looking for free publicity, and it works like a charm.

According to the New York Post, a final decision has yet to be made about Mancrunch’s ad.

A Schmitts Gay commercial would be awesome, good ole’ SNL, but really during the Superbowl, no one wants to see that!

a makeout session? are you kidding? that is disgusting. WTF… dont they know FOOTBALL fans are watching this??
i dont care if they advert for a gay dating site, but with a makeout session? why? ugh

The Tebow pro-life advocacy spot bothers me more than any gay dating ad could. I hope they lose sponsors due to their boneheaded decisions.

  12. shaunypoo says: Jan 29, 2010 9:59 AM

If there is nothing offensive about the commercial than why not accept it. They pay their money. Sounds like a moral decision.

Well, in America you shouldn’t really have to worry about this sort of thing. I don’t really care if they air the commercial or not. If its not funny, it probably won’t be remembered for long, as those are usually the ones people really like to see and talk about.
I say if you don’t want to see it, go get a plate of food or go to the bathroom when you see it coming, lol.

  16. bigtrav425 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:02 AM

Let me just simply say this….while im watchin the Super Bowl with a bunch of friends drinking, eating and having a good time. i DO NOT want to see 2 dudes making out with football jersey’s on.If you wanna be a Fudge Packer thats cool with me just dont show it on tv ESPECIALLY the Super Bowl. Its bad enough im going to have to sit thru that religious freak and bum Tebow’s commercial

  17. James_D says: Jan 29, 2010 10:02 AM

I believe in free speech. As much as I disdain that lifestyle I cannot with a clear consience say it shouldn’t be allowed on a commerical. If they can pony up the cash then I guess we’ll all have a brokeback moment whether we want it or not…

  18. Gautam says: Jan 29, 2010 10:03 AM

“(Be nice, please.)” … ha ha ha ha

  19. jeffragnarchicken says: Jan 29, 2010 10:03 AM

Although I don’t agree with the lifestyle, I say it is discrimination if they do not use the ad.
I don’t agree with the Tebow commercial either, I do not think it is up to a group of people to tell other people how to live their lives. That being said, if they want to spend the money for the ad, let them.
This is just another in a long list of things that do not really matter, that people want to be all up in arms about. You don’t want to see either commercial, that may be a great time to get up and take a leak.
I’m sure the 2 guys will be dressed in Packer attire though, and that is fitting.

  20. pitt says: Jan 29, 2010 10:05 AM

Let them air it, it couldn’t be any worse than watching the Rams, Redskins, Bucs, or Lions this year.

  21. ero52 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:05 AM

    This should get aired.
Americans talk incessantly about living in a free society so rejecting this for its content would be shocking.
I’ve also lost a lot of respect for Tebow in the past couple of weeks.

  22. bearsrule says: Jan 29, 2010 10:06 AM

Way,way, way too much political pressure here. No chance CBS airs the gay ad. To say they are unsure is just posturing. The religous right political lobby is much too powereful.

  23. ninerblitz says: Jan 29, 2010 10:06 AM

Sexual orientation is a personal matter, not one that should be publicized. I disagree with this ad, but sometimes living in the land of the free sucks.

  24. David says: Jan 29, 2010 10:06 AM

This is exactly the argument I made on Newsvine earlier in the week. If CBS wants to air Tebow’s ad, then Mancrunch or any other organization that is legitimate, and can afford the ridiculous prices for ads, should be allowed as well. This doesn’t seem to be rocket science. It is just fair play and freedom of speech. CBS needs to decide on what side of the Constitution and Bill of Rights it wants to stand.

  25. eaglesinnc says: Jan 29, 2010 10:06 AM

I wonder how many people saying that it’s free speech and blathering on about “liberals who want to block Tebow’s ad” will now say this shouldn’t be allowed. Hypocrisy? No, not in the right-wing world.

  26. Katmanduu says: Jan 29, 2010 10:06 AM

Since when is the gay communities’ money not as good as the straight community. I’m not gay, but this is discrimination at its best. If you losers can show Tebow’s commercial, then you sure as hell can show this one.
Is there anything that corporate america can’t screw up?!?

  27. JimmySmith says: Jan 29, 2010 10:07 AM

Whether or not CBS accepts the ad, Mancrunch must realize that their key target demographic will be reduced in size now that the Vikings have been eliminated.

  30. nyj-gate D says: Jan 29, 2010 10:09 AM

It’s ridiculous if CBS doesn’t let this ad run but will run Tebow’s ad. As long as the ad is family-friendly then I see no problem with them using it.

  31. realitypolice says: Jan 29, 2010 10:09 AM

Awesome. I hope CBS decides to run this immediately after the Tebow ad. One ad will piss off half the country, the other ad will piss off the other half. Or they can tell us in advance when they are planning to run the ads back to back, so everyone in America can plan their bathroom breaks in advance.

  32. The Nomad says: Jan 29, 2010 10:09 AM

No doubt starring Mike Greenberg and Mark Sanchez!

  33. DonkeyRider says: Jan 29, 2010 10:10 AM

Short of a full on “sword fight” how is this going to be offensive? What would really make this spot great if it was a Florio look-a-like making out with a grizzly looking dude wearing a purple #4 jersey.

  34. Emoney says: Jan 29, 2010 10:10 AM

I suppose it was only a matter of time before ads like this would be displayed during the Super Bowl. I don’t have a problem with them paying to advertise their website or whatever it is, but I think its inappropriate to have two guys making out on television. Nobody wants to see that.
Now if you wanted to have a lesbian ad site with two good looking girls making out, I’m ALLLLL for it! lol

  38. Jungle Juice says: Jan 29, 2010 10:13 AM

CBS could eliminate these pub seekers by asking for payment up front before making decisions. Most likely, they aren’t going to come up with the $$.
Regardless, these types of commercials should only be allowed after prime time when the kiddies are off to sleep.

  39. kennethnoisewater says: Jan 29, 2010 10:13 AM

I’m all for this on the condition they also make a commercial with hot chicks making out….it’s a gay dating site right? Show gay chicks! And not the big ones either, or the ones with flattops. I’m talking about the blondes in those movies with the no clothing and the what have you.

I gotta agree with the other posters here. I mean when you see other internet dating sites commercials they don’t always have straight people just making out in it. It’s ridiculous that they would ever consider this commercial to be played.

I’ll bet less than 5% of the men watching it will be gay. Why would they want to waste so much money on an ad that will hardly reach anyone in their target audience? Sounds like a publicity stunt to me. Looks like it worked.

  62. yem123 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:29 AM

Comparing the mancrunch commercial to the Tebow commercial isn’t a valid comparison.
Tebow is talking about the choice his mother made to have him, when she was advised to terminate the pregnancy. IT’S NOT SHOWING FOOTAGE OF AN ABORTION.
If Mancrunch didnt show a makeout session, I would say they are just equivalent. But by showing 2 men making out…. it is not a valid comparison to the Tebow commercial.

  63. Setobakura says: Jan 29, 2010 10:29 AM

CBS told mancrunch that their commercial was going to be shown between 1135 and 1235, but Jay Leno wanted that timeslot.

  64. Poo Flinging Monkey says: Jan 29, 2010 10:29 AM

Is Tim Tebow in the mancrunch ad? It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see him making out with a guy… not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  65. spdy3450 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:30 AM

I will never understand how a guy can look at another guys hairy @$$ and say “Mmmm gotta get me some of that”. Having said that though, there is a certain injustice to deny them the right to advertise during the superbowl. All of you opposing the rights of others simply because you disagree are hypocrites. Personally, I don’t wanna see the gay site comercial anymore then tebow’s Jesus freak comercial but I gotta feeling I’ll survive both comercials just fine. Afterall…I’m not so frail and brainless that the comercials will change my views or ruin my SB experience.

  66. Emoney says: Jan 29, 2010 10:32 AM

Put some purple pride Viking jersey’s on these two guys. Purple and gay go together like peanut butter and jelly.

  67. Daws84 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:33 AM

It is a free country and if CBS doesnt want to air it they shouldnt have to. Personally I have no problem with the gay community but the superbowl is more of a family event not sure why they are going for the shock factor of two guys making out. And for all the comparisons to Tebow….its not like he will be demonstrating an abortion.

  68. mwcarolina says: Jan 29, 2010 10:33 AM

(The Tebow pro-life advocacy spot bothers me more than any gay dating ad could)
now that is where i disagree, if the Tebow pro-life ad is bad then the gay dating ad is just as bad, both are controversial and both have their loves and hates and i think the gay dating ad is just as bad as the pro-life, but in my view if they pay for it and cbs allows it then it should be shown, i personally have no problem with commercials shown because if i hate them, i change the channel.

  69. yem123 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:33 AM

For the record I also want to say that I think all of those GoDaddy commercials shouldn’t be aired either. They are turning women into pieces of meat to sell an internet service. That is terrible and the cheapest form of marketing.

  70. yem123 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:35 AM

for all of those who have something against Christianity, I hardly think Tebow’s add will include “Accept Jesus!” It is strictly him talking about his mother’s choice. It isn’t religious.

So advertise the company, just don’t show the physical stuff. I don’t think Tebow’s add is going to go, ‘Sure am glad mom didn’t abort me’, (cut to an actual abortion scene).

  72. Strick says: Jan 29, 2010 10:36 AM

    Show the ad. For Christ’s sake… it’s 2010.
Remember the ad a few years back (Snickers, maybe) where two macho guys were unknowingly eating the same candy bar from opposite ends and their lips touched in the middle?
It was a great, funny ad. And it was pulled almost immediately because archaic, uptight, homophobic wingnuts complained about it.
Political correctness started out as a good idea. But it quickly dissolved into just another excuse for people to become “morally outraged” at anything they didn’t personally agree with.

  73. Caldon says: Jan 29, 2010 10:37 AM

They also rejected a Go daddy ad (as they have many times in the past), which clearly targets straight men, so the claim of discrimination is hard to pull off since they are saying its because its a gay ad.
Regarding all the “losing respect” and hate on Tebow. Regardless of which side of the issue you fall on, these kind of comments are just stupid. The country is fairly split on this issue, so you are saying that you hate half the country based on this one stance. Nice

Tebow and Mancrunch can not be compared whatsoever. I hate Tebow, by the way, but…
Tebow is advocating a pro-life stance, one that is shared by a good percentage of the nation. Let’s say it’s 50/50, maybe even 60/40 his way. There are pro-life billboards and commercials all over the place.
50% of the population does not enjoy gay sex. Sorry. 1% of the people who watch it will think it’s a great rallying cry for their counter culture, a few won’t care, and the majority will be repulsed.
Not saying I care if they air either commercial. I usually mix a drink or grab another beer during the commercials anyway, but you can’t compare these 2 commercials.

  78. pt8106 says: Jan 29, 2010 10:41 AM

I think the key is that CBS said they would air other advocacy views as long as they were tasteful. There is nothing tasteful about showing 2 dudes making out or 2 women making out. It would be comparable to the Tebow ad showing someone getting ready to have an abortion and then changing her mind while the ad ran. I wouldn’t agree with something like that running either. From what I’ve read the Tebow ad is done in a very tasteful manner so I have no problem with it.

I love the double standard men have regarding lesbians vs gay men. As a lesbian woman, the last thing I want is some guy drooling when I’m kissing my girlfriend… but that’s just me… *shrug*…
Either way, this IS discrimination. Granted, I will admit the LGBT community needs to know what battles to pick; as if they picked the right battles and not the insanely riduculous ones, (like trying to show a gay male commercial during the most testerone driven experience on TV of the year), then perhaps we’d be a little more accepted. However, if they have the money and want to spend it on a (stupidly made) commercial… (I have so many more ideas that would’ve made it more tasteful, and probably more funny), then that’s their 1/4 mil or whatever to waste….
Although I will say, there are more gay men who watch football than one would think…. even the flamboyantly gay men… something about the butts.. I don’t see it.. I watch it cause I grew up breathing football.. but that’s my take….

I DO NOT want to see two guys kissing on TV. I DO NOT want to be reminded of politically imflammatory subjects when I’m supposed to be watching a football game. This should be a celebratory time that heady and weighted subjects should take a backseat to.

I don’t see the big deal. CBS can decide to air whatever they want to air. It doesn’t matter if people claim discrimination or not. They can even say it’s because the station believes in ProLife and doesn’t believe in gay rights. As long as it’s not done to incite gay bashing there’s no issue. Of coarse they should and would never do that but the choice of commercials is their own choice.

This is descrimination, no doubt about it. The thing is, descrimination is an important part of society and it happens all the time. But it is important to understand that descrimination should only be limited to behaviors. If we don’t descriminate behaviors then anything can be allowed and that wouldn’t be in the best interest of society. So the question is, what is CBS descriminating against. The answer is a behavior, so they should have a right to say whether they support the behavior or not. If CBS decides they don’t want to accept money in return to show the commercial then they should have the right to do so, otherwise they are being forced to accept a behavior they don’t agree with. Funny how gays complain that the religious force their beliefs on them but they have no problem forcing their beliefs on the religious. In fact if gays would just be gay instead of worrying about how people feel about their lifestyle, they wouldn’t have to hear about how people feel it’s wrong (at least not in the public arena). Do you hear the religious make a big argument about pedophiles? no, because there isn’t a clamoring for acceptance like there is for gays (at least not yet). It’s the gays that started forcing their opinions on the public that sparked the religious (public) campaign against them.

Exactly. The KKK could run an add advertising what they believe. So long as it wasn’t a personal attack on an individual. This is the precise reason the Nazi party was allowed to march through Skokie, Illinois (a jewish community). “The cure for bad speech is more speech” -United States Supreme Court. Like it or not, the right being protected is more valuable than the offensiveness of the speech.
The freedom of speech is a fundamental right in our constitution and whether you want to see the kissing fella’s on at the superbowl, they have to be allowed to run the ad. If it was two hot chicks making out, there would be little objection. If it were a man and a woman, same thing. The idea of two guys isn’t something I, or most people on this site want to see, BUT, they’re allowed to run the ad so long as its not obscene and two guys kissing just isn’t.
As for the children argument, the Supreme Court addressed this with the likes of George Carlin and 2 live crew on the radio, Change the channel. Is it annoying? Yes, but you have the responsibility to determine what your kids see.

  104. crubenst says: Jan 29, 2010 11:15 AM

I think they should approve naked boobs before they approve 2 guys kissing on public tv. Indecency is in the eye of the beholder. I’m all for gay rights and doing whatever floats your boat BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, but its not fair to have to watch that if I don’t also get to see boobies.

A joke kissing scene, as in arms around each other, making lip smacking sounds or something without their lips actually touching and no actual kissing…you’ve seen people joke about it before on tv. Dudes joke like that from time to time.
People’s level of intolerance is really hilarious. You don’t want your son seeing it? You might want to review your reasons for that.
There’s nothing derogatory about it. It was done in a respectful manner. It deserves a spot if they’re willing to pay for it. ‘Nuff said.

You are comparing religion and a lifestyle that people have no choice in to the klan?
    Again. Really?!!
The fact that you don’t understand racism and discrimination is dumbfounding.
Just because you don’t agree with homosexuality, does not make it wrong.
I don’t agree with abortion, does that make it wrong? No, it’s not up to me to tell everyone what is right. As for gays, they are born that way, they are just as good as you and I. Have a relative come out of the closet and I’m sure you sing a different tune. Why they feel they have to be “in the closet” in the 1st place is part of what is wrong with our society.
Racism on the other hand is a choice and it is the highest form of ignorance out there.
Hating someone for the color of their skin? really?

As for the Tebow ad, it’s too late. We already have the kids, so it won’t effect us either way. If his ad had in any way led to their creation, however, I would be praying for a torn MCL to visit upon him.

  118. Sterling says: Jan 29, 2010 11:33 AM

I would think any commercial depicting a makeout session – whether homosexual or heterosexual – would not be appropriate for a game that starts before 8 p.m. and has many, many kids younger than 13 watching. Just my opinion.
A pro-life advocacy spot doesn’t have quite the same connotation as a gay dating site, so the two can’t be compared fairly. The pro-life spot is more equivalent to, say, the anti-smoking commercials that have aired during past Super Bowls; some of them were pretty obnoxious even to me, and I’m not a smoker.

And the reason there is no push for pedophiles amongst the religious is because most of the pedophiles are already employed by the church as priests.

“I love the double standard men have regarding lesbians vs gay men.”
I do, too. This is an issue that I’ve pondered in the past. Why is HLA (Hot Lesbian Action) more acceptable than FDMS (Filthy Dirty Man Sex)?
I believe that the behavioral differences between men and women and how they interact with others of the same sex is at the core. Women do things like hold hands, dance together, go to the bathroom together, cry together, get all huggy and kissy with each other, etc. and it’s not really taken as a reflection of their sexuality. It’s just accepted as chick behavior whether straight or not. You see some guys doing any of that and it is taken as a reflection of their sexuality so the straight ones don’t usually do it. I think there’s a conditioning effect in place when it comes to HLA. And besides, I look at woman as God’s greatest creation, can’t really blame anyone for feeling the same way that I do about it. I don’t blame you for being a lesbian. I wouldn’t want to have anything to do with nasty, stinky guys either. Eww, gross. There has to be something really wrong with anyone that wants to have sex with a man. And yes I’m including women in that.

  129. wiley16350 says: Jan 29, 2010 11:44 AM

I would also like to add to further make my point that there are many types of dating sites out there advocating adultry (swingin’), casual sex and other types of sexual encounters. Are we going to say that CBS has no right to decline these types of commercials? Because if they did they would be descriminating. Descriminating can be bad, but it is also necessary and can be appropriate in certain situations. To conclude, I would also like to point out that this site has every right to find another station that would be willing to show their commercial and if they were to succeed in doing that then I don’t have a problem with it, because as a viewer I still have a choice to watch or not.

  130. Jeff says: Jan 29, 2010 11:45 AM

other than that, why are people missing the big problem here, do you see sites like eharmony and match.com showing commercials where you’ve got folks making out? I don’t personally care what people do behind closed doors, its their bussiness not mine, but when you want to do it on public airwaves, then you are going to be held accountable by the public. if a majority of american’s don’t want to see this during a football game, then it shouldn’t be. It could be anything, same with the tebow commercial, except that a majority of americans probably aren’t going to find that offensive or bothersome, just some blowhards on here which represent a small minority. That’s exactly what they do. They choose it. There’s absolutely no evidence to support the theory that homosexuality is anything but a lifestyle choice.
Your little cousin is AFU, maybe because his parents are AFU. Why would a well-adjusted child be afraid to tell his well-adjusted parents something like that? Why would he feel the need to tell them at all? I wouldn’t advocate lying to them about it or even hiding it but I don’t see a big deal if everybody in the equation has their heads screwed on straight. They either love their son enough to accept it or they don’t. THAT is the real issue here. He was afraid that they didn’t love him enough to accept his choice of lifestyle. I think it’s funny and laugh. 99% of commercials are pushing something I don’t care about. Commercials don’t influence me anyway. And if they influence you (or your kids.) then maybe you need to do a better job of being a parent.

There’s no point in arguing with someone who obviously has a distinct opinion on the matter, because you’re not going to change your mind until something extreme happens in your life, as it did in mine. Some people open their minds more easily. You don’t sound like one of them.
That being said, you ARE entitled to your opinion. I’ve thought that way before so I also UNDERSTAND your opinion. However, I KNOW otherwise now. I’ve seen it first hand.
When your son comes out to you, let me know how you helped him make that “choice.” Your opinion changes real fast when you’re directly involved.

Anyways, I don’t give a crap about some gay dating service commercial, they can’t be any lamer than match.com or stupid jewelry commercials.
Plus, if they show mancrunch.com and pleasedon’tkillunbornbabiesbecauseimtimtebow.com they can kill two birds with one stone. More gays = less unwanted babies, which means less abortions to make the angels cry. Everybody wins!

Regardless of our opinions on abortion and gays, CBS has the right to show or not show whichever commercials it chooses. If the commercial meets FCC regs, CBS can chose to show it. However, CBS has to consider the financial impact of lost sponsors or the public outcry if they televise something controversial. If CBS determines that either ad is so controversial that it might hit them in the wallets, then they’ll pull the ad. I have a feeling that both of these commercials will be pulled. There are too many pro-abortion liberals and anti-gay conservatives in this country to keep them from showing.

Maybe the censors should get involved and ban any sort of racy or controversial ad all together and not even leave it up to CBS. Those things have their place for advertising to their demographic, not everyone. The Superbowl is a special telecast in that people off all ages (including children) around the world will be watching. Having to listen to Tebow give his religious views or two guys kissing is much worse than seeing some nipple on Janet Jackson and yet there was at tremendous uproar about that.

  173. TimTheEnchanter says: Jan 29, 2010 1:26 PM

Why are religious freaks and gay activists deciding how this country is run.The people in the middle, who make up most of America need to stand up. The Pelosi’s and the Palin’s of this world are not America. I see plenty of normal people who whatever side they are on get along and can have an intelligent convo and debate on any subject. These hard line haters on both sides are so annoying and I wish they would go away. Tebow should stick to post game speeches, because since we have free speech, I will make sure every time he sucks to let him know he sucks, since he wants to let us know how he feels so bad. I am pro life, and pro choice. I think everyone has a right to live and everyone has a right to make their own decisions. On this gay commercial, I think CBS should say we are happy to have Mancrunch.com, but we think because many kids will be watching that not only will we restrict you from 2 men making out, but we will also restrict any making out at all even between a man and a woman. How hard is that? No pun intended.

  175. wrath4771 says: Jan 29, 2010 1:40 PM

I didn’t know the PFT community was so stupid. I saw the following things that are disgusting: Vox said that “not all discrimination is bad” someone compared gays to the KKK, and several of you feel that some how gay people are going to infect your kids (god I hope you guys don’t actually have kids) with gayness.
I didn’t think this would be hard to get across but apparently I have to do everything around here. First: Mike, thank you for reporting this (no sarcasm at all). Second: When he said two gay guys harmlessly making out I’m sure you all recoiled in horror but I’m pretty sure this is going to be about the same amount of making out as the disney channel. Third: If they are ok with one controversial ad, then why not be ok with another? For the moron that said “what if the KKK wanted to do an ad” the KKK are a group that promotes hatred and violence agains’t a group of people, not an ad that promotes a dating website.
I could say things like “if it was two girls…” or “freedom of speech…” but I am sick of making well thought arguments for my points to people who clearly can’t process them. If I have to sit and watch those repulsive godaddy.com commercials (I don’t care that she drives a race car she is fugly) than you all can stomach two male models pretending that they love each other for 30 seconds. I hope every single person that thinks they shouldn’t play this commercial has their first born son be gay. Actually no I don’t, your poor kids are going to have it tough already with their parents being stupid, ignorant, and hateful, if they were gay you people might just kick them out or kill them. As a group the PFT visitors have never disgusted me more. I know not all of you are ok with what CBS is doing but the majority of the comments I read leads me to believe that the majority opinion of PFT readers hate gays. I really hope I am wrong.
Mike – Thanks again for posting this, I know this is asking a lot and I would understand if you don’t want to turn away potential visitors or your regulars but I would appreciate it if you followed this story. This is probably asking too much but I would love to know you opinion and argument behind it. If you are ok with what CBS is doing at least I can see the other argument at its strongest form, if you are for it maybe you will change one or two minds of your regular viewers. Either way thanks.

  189. NachoBidness says: Jan 29, 2010 2:19 PM

This has nothing to do with free speech you dumba$$es. CBS is a corporation who is free to accept money for advertising as they see fit. If they ran the Tebow ad for free and refused to do it for the gays, then that’s discrimation. Otherwise, it’s a matter of taste, knowing your target audience, and above all else…A BUSINESS DECISION. It’s the same reason why certain people can do and say many a real racist thing everyday, but someone saying, “nappy headed hoes” loses their job. GREEN. It’s a poor business decision to show two guys making out, it has nothing to do with morality or the first amendment. You chumps need to stop spinning it as such.

  190. DoomsDayD75 says: Jan 29, 2010 2:35 PM

  191. this class sucks says: Jan 29, 2010 2:37 PM

    @nachobidness
There is certainly a free speech issue here. CBS is a corporation but as far as the law is concerned corporations are people. They get all the rights and liberties of people. We could talk all day about how stupid that is but the point is when you come right down to it I think as a matter of law they are with in their rights to not air this commercial. That doesn’t mean that everyone who likes America, and like equality for all people regardless of race, gender, orientation, religion and so forth (so everyone but Vox) should shut up about it. We are with in our rights to try and make this as big a deal as possible to both help out this company that CBS is screwing over, and to ensure that people know all the information about the subject to make an intelligent decision on their opinion.
For the people that its not disgusting that CBS do this, doesn’t it worry you in the slightest that Vox agrees with you? That in its self would make me at least consider changing opinions.

  192. maxinquaye says: Jan 29, 2010 2:44 PM

I bet the people making these comments don’t feel the same way about all the beer commercials.
Ironic, really, as the kids in question apparently have rednecks for parents and, therefore, I can pretty much guarantee that Bud Light will have a greater negative effect on these kids’ lives than homosexuality.

  193. Dead Coach says: Jan 29, 2010 2:57 PM

  194. 3 yards and a cloud says: Jan 29, 2010 3:06 PM

    @.VoxVeritas :
While a private company, like CBS, can choose not to run the ad, they have to have some non-discriminating reason for not running it. If their reason is merely b/c they don’t agree with the content, then they are doing exactly what the first amendment prohibits.
I agree CBS doesn’t have to allow the commercial, but the brain trusts better come up with a better reason than they disagree with the message.

I don’t like the ad because, while it’s funny on some levels, it’s cheesy and poorly produced/directed. It was obviously slapped together on short notice and a shoe-string budget to be used to taunt CBS, in the wake of the pending Tebow debacle. into some sort of fairness-doctrine controversy. I don’t like that game.
OTOH… it would be interesting to see the comments had the ad been presented in the style of match.com or eHarmony.com (a method I would embrace whole-heartedly) showing a couple as the reminisce over their meeting on one of those services. (not that such a meeting is likely given the reluctance of such websites to embrace those of us seeking the same-sex version of the societal norm.)
Ps- To those who say: We don’t care as long as we don’t have to see it. We see you and your progeny kissing/holding hands/making out every where we turn, everywhere we go.. What would it be like if society labeled the simple, routine act of kissing your wife/husband good-bye next to the car in the driveway every mourning to be repugnant (or even down right illegal)?
