McNabb: Reid told me I'll be back

In an exclusive interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb claims that coach Andy Reid informed him he would stay with the team in 2010 during McNabb’s exit physical.

“That’s all that matters,” McNabb said.  ”I heard it when he said it to you guys, but I heard it before anyway.  I think a lot of people look too far into things with all the assumptions and ‘this’ could happen.  He told everybody I’m going to be there, and I’m his guy.”
McNabb added that he is “sure” backup QB Kevin Kolb is getting antsy to play.  He did not discuss the $6.2 million roster bonus (due May 5) that the Eagles can get out of paying McNabb if they trade him prior to that date.
Something that Reid said in early- to mid-January won’t end the offseason trade rumors, or make it any less likely that McNabb will be moved.  By completing 64.6 percent of his passes and throwing for 741 yards in three 2009 appearances, Kolb has shown that he is ready for a much, much bigger role.
And if a team is willing to surrender a first-round pick for Philadelphia’s starter, there’s a good chance that Kolb will get that opportunity.

The media is gonna drag all this out like Boldin to the Eagles last year, Fitzgerald to the Eagles the year before etc etc etc.
Ask yourself this – how many high profile trades has Andy Reid made?
I mean if the offer is there and it’s really high like a 1st and a 2nd plus, then yea they’d probably bite, but McNabb isn’t gonna be dealt for some pittance, and anyone who has followed Andy Reid’s Eagles knows how much they overvalue their own players in trade situations.
On another note, I don’t wanna see Kolb dealt either. I guess there is the possibility of giving McNabb another shot this year, re-signing Kolb at a fraction because he didn’t start, then tagging and trading McNabb if he doesn’t bring one home. If he does, well he isn’t going anywhere I assure you of that. McNabb does have an ego, and I do believe he wants to stay and finish in Philly if possible.

Kolb is not the answer, need to draft another QB. I’d rather let Vick take over for 4 years at least.

I’m an Eagles fan that thinks McNabb will be back and wants him back. I’m not convinced Kolb is better and I’m not sure he is good. At best, he is Aaron Rogers, which means good passes and a lot of untimely sacks, fumbles and interceptions.
Besides, why would they renew him last year for only two years if they were going to keep him for two. If McNabb doesn’t have a good year next year, they can bench him for Kolb and not care if he cries, since he’ll be gone.
I don’t think he is going anywhere.

CRYING HE WANTED TO START! I SAY TRADE THE SNAKE EYE! THAT RIGHT HE IS A CAN OF TOMATOES. HOW MANY TIME WILL PHILLY FANS GET IT. YEAH THEY ALL WANT A RUNNING BACK OVER MCNABB. IF ANDY LISTEN TO THE FANS WE WOULD BE ELEVEN YEAR LOSERS.

as a ‘Boys fan, I can honestly say that I hope they trade McNabb away. those Philthy fans don’t appreciate how good of a player he is and are dumba$$e$ if they think Kolb could step in next year and produce half as well as McNabb ever did. please send him out of our division, that way we have only the Giants to compete with for next years NFC Beast Championship

  20. alexnexus says: Jan 30, 2010 2:58 AM

Is really easy to speculate. Watch me:
“If a team is not willing to surrender a first-round pick for Philadelphia’s starter, there’s a good chance that Kolb will not get an opportunity to play in 2010.”
    See!…
So if you say it/write it, it becomes an automatic “issue” for professional speculators, but not for journalists. (e.g. this note).

  21. Route36West says: Jan 30, 2010 3:00 AM

Silva you should read your collegues stories before you post.
There is no way the Eagles are trading Mcnabb for 1 first round pick unless it comes with a couple second and third round picks a 5th rounder and a 6th or 7th rounder as well.
Roy williams was trade for a 1st a 3rd a 5th and a 7th and hes a bum. Eagles will need substaintly more for Mcnabb to justify trading him.
I say it will take 2 first a 5th and 7th to get Mcnabb. Reid will not let Mcnabb go for anything less then what Cutler was traded for. Print it.

You hit the nail on the head. All these windbags like Vox have been waiting 14 years for the Chips to be good enough to boast about, they win one PO game , then get MURDERED AND EMBARRASSED, and still think thier ish dont stink cuz they beat da IGGLES. We must be that important!

  27. phillybird says: Jan 30, 2010 8:33 AM

Mr. B, I guesss the Eagles should have hired you for the GM job since you have everything figured out about Kolb. You are doing the same thing to Kolb that you said Eagles fans did to McNabb. but i guess you know more.

  28. racer-x says: Jan 30, 2010 8:58 AM

You guys don’t get it. Besides the Eagles being able to get something for McNabb at the end of his career, there is also the matter of Kolb. They DO think he is the future, but he has one more year. They need this year to figure out if he is the guy, so they know whether to lock him up or let him walk.
Reid doesn’t make many high profile trades, but this is a unique situation. He just got extended, so he is safe to make this change and it gives him a couple, three years to get the kid (along with jackson, celek, mccoy, maclin) leading this young offense.
    Makes too much sense.

  29. Mooch says: Jan 30, 2010 9:46 AM

DAWK 2020…with all due, I do not get the mindset.
“I’m not convinced Kolb is better and I’m not sure he is good. At best, he is Aaron Rogers, which means good passes and a lot of untimely sacks, fumbles and interceptions.”
I don’t know either, but I know what I have with McNabb and it isn’t good enough. This team reminds me of the Iverson 76ers or Ewing Knicks. They were good, but you knew they could never win it all.
Donovan officially can’t win the big game. I’m sorry, we’ve seen the best from him. This is all there is. We need to rebuild the offensive line and most of the defense, while nuturing great young talent like Jackson, Maclin, Clelek, and McCoy. By the time all that gets online McNabb will be retired. So let’s find out what we have in Kolb.
If he sucks, so be it. Should the Jets have kept Kellen Clemens and not started Sanchez? Should we have kept Doug Pederson because he was the known commodity and McNabb was the unknown quantity? Should we have given W a third term despite total incompetence because he was the devil we knew?
I trusted Andy on selecting McNabb, I trust his selection of Kolb. The man cannot manage the clock or gameplan, but he can draft QB’s.

  30. Rickah99 says: Jan 30, 2010 9:47 AM

Dallas Cowboy phans….WE been stinging yo ass for the last decade! The words “abuse” & “red-headed stepchild” come to mind!
    Enjoy 2009 while it lasted.

  31. Mooch says: Jan 30, 2010 9:50 AM

Oh, and Donovan will NEVER play with only one year left on his deal – which is why they gave him 2 years in the last extension.
And I think he’s earned the right to demand that. So if they bring him back they need to re-extend him. That’s the way NFL contracts go.
I cannot determine which will win – Andy Reid’s desire for taking the safe and predictable route that will get him 10 wins and one playoff game next year OR the Eagles desire not to spend a ton of money on fading stars.
I personally think McNabb will be here 15 more years and Kolb goes elsewhere and does well. We will win exactly 0 Super Bowls over that span.

  32. Mooch says: Jan 30, 2010 9:57 AM

How can anyone say they know enough about Kolb to make an assessment?
Remember, Reid drafted Kolb. It wasn’t the fanbase of “McNabb Haters”.
This is a business people. You are taking it way to personally. Oh, and aside from Eric Lindros there has never been a bigger baby in town than Donovan McNabb. He’s an awful teammate and leader. Constantly pointing fingers at young players he overthrows.
And has anyone else noticed that McNabb NEVER talks to anyone on the sideline unless they are up by 40? And he never looks at the photos of the defenses like Manning or Brady? And that he has minimal interaction with Marty between series? And that he is one of the longest tenured QB’s in the NFL…yet never calls his own plays and rarely audibles?
Didn’t he get a 9 on the wunderlik?

  36. The PineValees says: Jan 30, 2010 10:18 AM

McNabb is not a quick passer. He needs time for a play to develop and then he makes the throw. Last year the Eagles O-Line was decimated. I believe Andy still has faith that the O-line will be back and healthy this year to help protect and give the time needed for McNabb to succeed. He’ll be back.

OL looks like an overhaul to me. Wasn’t the plan to eventually move Herremanns to RT? I feel like we have good young guards to plug in.
I gave up on Andrews, he’s too busy getting his Michael Phelps on. He’s lazy, crazy, or has a back injury. Pick one. He’s fininshed.
And his brother sucks too. Like the Monte Reagor signing, we took damaged goods in an attempt to double down on The Big Kid.
Oh, and Penguin…the deal about a 3rd term for W. That was a joke too.
    Genius.

  39. Mooch says: Jan 30, 2010 10:33 AM

Don’t mention the Phillies. 99% of Cowboys fans are also Yankees fans, they’ll throw it back at you.
They are also Lakers fans, who were once Bulls fans, and before that they were Celtics fans.
They have no honor, no code, no integrity.
And few are from Dallas itself.

Congrats on finally winning something in the new millenium. Really, hats off!

  41. Mooch says: Jan 30, 2010 10:49 AM

    DBB -
Our best offensive player – who, yes, we are now over-reliant on – is Deasean Jackson.
Thing is, you make my point for me. We did indeed rely on McNabb to carry the offense for years, and we won no SB’s. We then gave him the greatest WR weapon in the game, and he won no SB’s. Now he has a ton of weapons, but wait…they’re too young. Or too many guys were hurt. Or the ref should called PI on the Cardinals.
On and on. So we won no SB’s.
    Always an excuse.
To McNabb supporters EVERYTHING has to be going right for him to win. We need to get all the calls, we need to run the ball a lot, we need to stay healthy, we need to get 100% out of every player, the defense needs to shut down the opponent all the time, and every skill position must be staffed by (1) veterans who (2) never make mistakes and (3) always stay healthy. McNabb can never be asked to mount a game winning drive.
Well, if all that happens you or I could be the QB and win a SB. Fact is, all of these variables exist with every team. Guys like Manning and Brady and Big Ben win games they are not supposed to win. I can count maybe 4 games this decade that the Eagles won that I did not expect them to win. One was against Dallas with Garcia at the helm. Bears playoff game where we killed Jim Miller. Last year against the Giants in the offs.
Bottom line. McNabb wins the games he is supposed to win, almost never wins a game he isn’t supposed to win. It’s fact. And it is time to change.

As I’m sure you well know, a generalization serves only as an announcement that the issuer of same is full of doo doo. Plus, judging by some of your past comments, you’ve apparently spent enough time at the Linc intimidating the home fans with your Witten jersey that you probably know every one personally by now. Hence, you know for a fact that each and every one of them is fat, lazy and stupid.
