As Rosenthal pointed out in an update to our earlier item from Friday regarding the retirement party recently held by veteran defensive end Patrick Kerney, some reports in Seattle disputed our report that the event occurred.
But at least one outlet in Seattle confirms that Kerney had a going-away party for himself.
Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune reports — citing multiple sources — that the event occurred.
So what’s going on here? Well, if Kerney actually retires, he’d owe the team nearly $5 million in signing bonus money. If he gets cut, he’d owe the team nothing.
And with a $5.1 million salary due to be paid in 2010, it’s possible that the new regime would decide to spend that money elsewhere — if Kerney opts not to retire and return $5 million of it.
There are no mixed reports on his “retirement” party. The only thing mixed about it is this NONSOURCED report. WTF were you thinking. His wife, who is a news reporter. Confirmed it was not a retirement party. This article is completely on crack. Way to attempt salvaging your credibility.
