Giving the ball to a RB is assumed to be a low risk proposition. You don't expect that the guy will drop the ball. Throwing a pass is a high risk proposition. You always know that the other team has 11 guys out there trying to catch the same ball.
If AP doesn't fix this problem, he will go down in history similarly the TO. A freakish talent who puts up good numbers but had an achilles heel and could never get the job done. I hate to say that because AP is actually a good kid, but I can't think of a better analogy.
AP also fumbled in OT of a Bears game which would have given Vikes home field throughout the playoffs. It is just about the fumbles, it is about when he fumbles. He coughs it up in critical situations.

@Adam-Chris Scheftersen
hahahaha what are you talking about
notice how those 4 seasons were also the only years green made the probowl and weird how it was (as u put it) in the height of his fumble-prone period
and what are you trying to say about AP, that he sucks or what
-----------------------------
Listen, idiot. I'll lay it out for you. One. More. Time.
People constantly defend Peterson's fumble foibles by pointing to hall of fame players who fumbled about the same amount as Peterson. I replied by saying those guy played in a different era... With different expectations.
I have never said Peterson sucks. In fact, in several of these Peterson fumbling threads I've said I'd love for the Packers to have Peterson. But his fumbling problems, until he figures it out, are a major problem. And comparing his numbers to guys like Jim Brown and Walter Payton is little more than refusing to accept that it's a big problem.
And once again, you pointed to Ahman Green and I pointed out how even Ahman Green in his worst butterfingers years didn't come close to putting the ball on the ground as often as Peterson. However, he did catch more passes.. And he had more yardage in 2003 than Peterson ever has... But who's counting, right?

C'mon guys, lay off adam-chris. He has named himself after two complete morons, so you can't expect much from him. That being said, there is no difference in fumbles and interceptions. They are both turnovers. An interception is way worse than a fumble in my opinion, as the qb isn't getting hit when the other guy catches the ball. I would love to see anyone on here saying Peterson sucks because of the fumbles hold onto the ball while you have a 2oo+ pound defender hitting you as hard as they can.

Secondly... Over two months ago? Do I need to do some more fact-checking on your ass? December 4th to January 29th? Over two months?

What is funnier is that you wasted the time to comment on something so pathetic........
I allocate the same amount of time as normal.
I just make sure to remember dumb posts, such as yours. No worries though, you won't win, there are others more deserving.

Ahman Green, 4 straight probowls and he had 23 fumbles over those 4 straight probowls

Wow, you really showed me up. Ahman Green averaged 61.4 touches per fumble. So you've shown us all that even Ahman Green in the height of his fumble-prone period didn't approach the frequency Adrian Peterson's putting the ball on the ground?

It is correctable. Last offseason he dedicated himself to becoming a better pass catcher, route runner, and blocker. The results were very evident as he was much improved in those areas this season.
I've watched every one of his fumbles more than once. Here is my somewhat educated opinion.
He had a few on handoffs and pitches. These are focus thing. He's thinking too hard on his next move and what not. These ones are seperate from the others.
A disproportionate number of his fumbles come near the sideline. I think he relaxes there because defenders can only come from one direction and a fumbled ball can likely go out of bounds. But obviously it is not that safe there because many fumbles come that way.
Many others come when he is essentially running straight or cutting normally and not doing anything spectacular. It is just that sometimes he doesn't have it secured at all and the slightest bump or hit jars it.
Some of his fumbles come when he is trying to do something spectacular. These I almost think you have to just live with. We don't want him to change the way he runs.
Basically, I think if he stopped all the "stupid" fumbles then the times that he fumbles doing something fancy would be something we can live with. Most of the fumbles are NOT a result of how he fights for yardage not counting the ones near the sideline which he just has to stop completely.
Ironically he rarely if ever fumbles as the result of a big jarring hit. Often that is the most common time to fumble but you don't see it from him much. He has the ability to secure it and he just needs to seperate the times when he is securing it and times when he is focusing on balance and cutting and making spectacular plays.
Also one thing that goes unsaid in all of this is that I personally think his fumbles are somewhat the result of trying to do too much. Blocking was poor in the run game this season even considering all the loaded fronts he saw. When he isn't getting blocks I think he feels like he has to do something to make it happen.

Leto_II says:

Why are RBs fumbles treated more critically than QBs throwing picks?
-----------------------------
I'll take this one.. Because by definition, the ball has to leave a QB's hands in order for him to complete a pass. And generally speaking, there's 3-5 guys you want to pass it to and about 7 guys you don't want to pass it to.
There's an inherent difference in passing the ball and holding onto the ball. You should try it sometime.
You can't simply compare a RB's fumbles to a QB who has the same number of INTs. If you want to make a comparison, you need to compare them by their relative rankings. Peterson led all NFL RBs with 7 fumbles, 6 lost. So a valid comparison to a QB would be to the QB with the most INTs... Jay Cutler, who had 26. They were the worst in the business at ball security at their positions.
Unless you want to go the extra step and look at INT% and FUM% (take them as a percentage of passes/touches). I don't care to do that right now, though. But in that comparison, Mark Sanchez or Jake Delhomme may come out worst. And for RBs it might be Steve Slaton.

I agree with you, CapsLockKey states "The great ones know when to fight for it and when to protect the ball"--tell that to walter peyton who has a higher fumble rate than AP
----------------------------
Actually, he doesn't. Peterson has fumbled once every 49.9 touches. Payton fumbled once every 50.3 touches. So Payton fumbled slightly less often than Peterson.
However, as I've pointed out before when people have brought up Dickerson, Payton, Brown, etc.. Those guys all played in an earlier era. You can't fumble like that in today's NFL. It's not accepted.
Payton's career began 32 years before Peterson's. Find Pro-Bowl guys from the past 10-15 years who fumble as often as Peterson.

No, not everything is going to be perfect for a backup, run-of-the-mill RB, but this is ADRIAN PETERSON! He's one of, if not, the best RB's in the league - we should all expect perfection from a player with his talent.

Exactly. That's why Manning never throws a pick, Pujols never strikes out, and Kobe never misses a shot, because they're the best. Do you see how stupid you are?

Adrian's fumbling may never get better, because he truly does't see anything WRONG with it. Every time he's commented about it, not just recently, you can see the pride he takes in the overall way he runs, as if actually holding onto the ball, or going safely down to prevent lost yardage, has no part in what a running back is responsible for, as if it's incidental to his success on a given run, as if putting the ball at risk is simply irrelevant. Vikings receivers hold on to the ball with a deathgrip, not infallibly, but way more often than not, successfully and consistently. How can an RB, especially one with his talent and rep, not do the same or better?
In his latest comments, he explains that guys are just going after the ball in order to avoid taking him on physically, which begs the question of how come people are still able to knock the ball away? HE DOESN'T HEAR THE QUESTIONS. He's explaining to us what we don't seem to understand, i.e., why he's so good. He doesn't have, after all the practices and all the games and all the critics, a CLUE! that there's anything he needs to improve.
I'm sick of hearing how bad he feels about mistakes. All players make mistakes. Those with better perspective do feel bad, but then they start working on improving, out of a desire to hold up their end, because of personal embarrassment, because they're teed off at a growling coach, or a snickering opponent, or fans. But in order to improve, they have to start from the premise that they're not perfect. I don't think Adrian believes that he's not perfect. He's been given a pass for way too long because of his great natural talent, and pleasant demeanor, and good work ethic, but for the sake of his long-term career - & more importantly, THE TEAM, the message needs to be brought home to him, and his work ethic needs to be applied to all the right things, not just those he's already good at.
My particular hangup is the plays that cost the team YARDAGE. There must be some kind of drill or something that can effectively address his stubborn refusal to go down when a play is done, BEFORE he loses precious yardage - 1 yard, 3, 7 - field position! posession! Maybe a chart to study, of where the team was at the start of a play on which he carried the ball, where he should have gone down, where he actually did go down, and the cost of his refusal to do so. Failure in fullout effort is far more acceptable to me than prideful, costly stubbornness. Step One is conceding that there's a problem. I don't think Adrian, genuinely nice guy that he is, sees anything at all wrong with his performance. He still sees himself as a kind of perfect running back. Until he opens his mind to see his performances realistically, he won't improve. He'll emain only a great runner, NOT a great RUNNING BACK.

i agree he seems to have fumbling down pat. he really cant get any better at fumbling away the ball in key situations, thus invalidating prior scores and yards.
he could work on throwing interceptions in key situations, however, and that would relieve the vicodins of the need to resign favre. that way all day could be a double threat. if he could then train up to kick/punt badly he could be a triple (or more) threat.
and the vicodins are 4-2 in other nfc/nfl championship games, so there was choking a long time ago too.

Part of the guy's problem is he doesn't know when to go down. He fights for that extra inch after he's wrapped up when the benefit of it is grossly over weighed by the fact he's given extra time for more defenders to come in for a strip. The great ones know when to fight for it and when to protect the ball.
----------------------------------------------
The problem with your reasoning here is that he's not fighting for "that extra inch" many times he fights off defenders and earns an extra 10-15 yds, and sometimes houses it. I agree he needs to know when to protect the ball but what makes AP great is the fact that he's such a violent runner and I would not want to change his running style at all.

Once again, gotta laugh at all the stupid posters and thank god that none of them are members of any coaching staffs. I'm not even a Vikings fan but can guarantee you that there isn't a freakin' headcoach in the NFL that wouldn't want A. Peterson on their team. NOT A ONE! It's a free country, post what you want where you want but realize that with irrational posts you are only proving an age old axim..."it is better to be stupid than to open your mouth and prove it". Hiding behind a moniker does not grant you any more "intelligence" than if you were to go by your real name. People who read an idiotic hate based post also read the author's moniker and learn after one stupid post to not waste their time reading future posts from the person regardless of which name they choose to hide behind. Grow up people, try including a little substance or objectivity in your rants.
