Raiders: Jackson didn't arrive simply to tutor Russell

JaMarcusRussell.jpgThe perception is that the Raiders hired Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator in an effort to salvage JaMarcus Russell’s career.   The Raiders say that’s not true.

“Hue Jackson was hired to work with the entire offense, regardless of who the quarterback might be,” Raiders senior executive John Herrera said to Paul Gutierrez of the Sacramento Bee Thursday.

It may not sound like much, but that’s essentially a public declaration that Russell won’t be guaranteed anything.  That’s a change from precedent and clearly approved from on high.

“[JaMarcus] is just one man on this football team,” Tom Cable said KHTK’s Mike Lamb Thursday. “He knows he’s got to better, we know he’s got to get better, but everyone on this team, coaching staff and players alike, has got to get better.”

It sounds like Russell needs to get a lot better or he’ll start 2010 as a backup.  That should be music to the ears of Raiders fans.

can he work with McFadden too so the guy doesnt fall every time he turns the corner or is touched by a fly?

God I hope Al Davis has listened to Cable as far as Russell being a bum and not being our only option.
    Go Raiders.

    Rosenthal:
Holy $#%@! You guys actually reported the actual quotes this time! This is a great day for journalism.
Just like I and Raider B have been saying for the past two weeks: the real story is: since Cable is staying, what is JBust’s future with the Raiders? will he restructure contract? (he already publicly said he wouldnt) will the Raiders give him an ultimatum for the offseason? or cut him? (I hope so).
Maybe PFT and its crack staff can work the phones and get a solid lead on one of these scenarios, instead of sticking to speculation and conjecture. That would be refrehing.
    PS
Rosenthal – tell Florio that we are all still waiting for you guys to post a story about how Seymour said he wanted to re-sign with the Raiders. It shouldnt matter that you guys were dead wrong in the beginning of the season about Seymour’s willingness to be a Raider.

    P.S. Cable’s still the coach…..

woo hoo. maybe there is hope for the Raider Nation after all.

Often times journalists overparse things, but when it comes to the Raiders, it’s entirely warrented. Oftentimes what they’re not saying is just as important as what they are.
Herrera is basically Davis’ ventriloquist dummy. He doesn’t say a word unless it’s pre-approved by Davis. The fact that Al is NOT issuing a flat statement saying “JaMarcus Russell will be the QB” speaks volumes. The old man is nearing the end of his patience with JaManwich.

  7. Quagmire says: Jan 29, 2010 10:18 AM

Don’t give up on JaMarcus yet…sure he was the worst QB in the NFL last year (by a mile) but the 4th year is the charm.

Invaiduh: P.S. Cable isn’t the problem.

John Herrera is a douche!! Why Al keeps this bum around is a mystery to me!

AMAZING!!!! A factual story about the Raiders?!?!?! Oh wait I see why….
    Gloryhole didnt write it!

Wow, you guys at PFT are just figuring that out. It’s a miracle you guys can get out of bed, much less put a sentence together. I believe Cable said the same thing to someone else down in Mobile earlier in the week.
Why don’t you now go and read through the entire KHTK interview and see where Cable says that the whole firing/staying thing has been speculation all along? How he says he will be the Raiders coach in 2010.
Why would you do that though? You probably still think Cable will be fired. Or, if he stays, you will be expecting an announcement that he stays.
Maybe your just trying to stretch that interview into two posts. Either way, put it to bed already so you can move on.

(can he work with McFadden too so the guy doesnt fall every time he turns the corner or is touched by a fly?)
hahaha, yeah McFadden does need to be worked with.
(Don’t give up on JaMarcus yet…sure he was the worst QB in the NFL last year (by a mile) but the 4th year is the charm.)
i think people would not give up on him if he actually tried to get better and worked hard as he could, but he seems to not give a care.

WTF, PFT reporting facts? WOW! Still think Cables Job is in jeopordy? Heres some more quotes from Cable im not surprised PFT left out.
    http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_14291549
“I don’t think there was ever any question,” Cable said, when asked if he expects to be the Raiders coach next season. “That, really, was more speculation than anything else. It’s never been a thought in my mind.
“We went at this thing every day, whether it was discussions with the owner or discussions with the staff, that we were moving forward and getting ready for 2010. So, it’s never really been an issue for us.”
“We’ve talked about where we’re at as a football team. “… We really never have had discussions about what would or wouldn’t happen. It’s just always been about evaluating the Oakland Raiders,” Cable said. “I don’t know that at any time he’s ever said he was going to change or he wasn’t going to change (coaches). It’s just an evaluation process that every team goes through.”

Russell needs to be cut. If he enjoys the Raiders stadium so much he should be the starting nacho vendor. if he seriously thinks he is going to be our qb he needs to get a clue. the Nation hates him and the organization is either losing or already lost patience with him. people have stated that he needs to lose weight which is fine but its not going to help him be a leader, accurate passer or have pocket presence. I doubt he would have lasted this long on any playoff caliber team. on the bright side, he could have an all pro year as a tackling dummy.

  18. gmenfan56892710 says: Jan 29, 2010 11:06 AM

JaMarcus is not good, but until Al gets some good receivers and a more consistent offensive line the QB is not the biggest issue. Also like it or not JaMarcus has a lot of guaranteed $ left to receive and the Raiders should not spend more $ on the QB position until the talent around the QB is more respectable. These are the Raiders so common sense need not apply.

  19. Raider B says: Jan 29, 2010 11:22 AM

    gmenfan,
Just to let you know, J Bust already got his G Money. We can cut him and he doesnt get any thing else other than what he already got. The Raiders will take a cap hit, but if theres no cap next year it wont matter. And also the WRs didnt seem to be a problem for Gradkowski.

  20. RaidermikenLA says: Jan 29, 2010 11:39 AM

Jamarcus needs to see the writing on the wall – this hiring pretty much says it all in bold and caps. We need to solidify the O-Line/ D-Line and LB Corp..we already have our QB if we can get him signed (Gradkowski) so we should just build and what we have now and not place Jamarcus in the spotlight while we do this – We need that stud OT Tackle from Idaho, draft a couple of DT’s and some fresh LB’s thru the draft and FA and we’ll be alright -

  21. Peoples Champ says: Jan 29, 2010 11:40 AM

JaMarcus is a joke. He will be out of the league in a few years. Out of all the busts the Raiders have drafted in the past 5 + years or so, He is the worst. Without question.

  22. ninevel says: Jan 29, 2010 12:21 PM

The Raiders should get a new quarterback from the has been Arena Football league. We can’t wait forever for JaMarcus to improve. NFL is a professional league, not a senior citizens league or a leisure club. I think any backup quarterbacks are better than JaBAmarcus. It’s very frustrating to see the Raiders suck every year and the laughing-stock of the NFL.

  23. tatum32 says: Jan 29, 2010 12:26 PM

JaMarcus just doesnt get it. Thank god they got Bruce Almighty, or they’d really be up s$%t creek.

Not Curtis Painter. If the Saints get pressure on “Forehead” the way they bullied Favre, NO WAY will forehead finish the game. Then the true meaning of “awful backup QB” will come to light for all people on planet Earth to see.
What happens when the Saints knock BOTH Colts’ QBs out?

  26. Marky McFly says: Jan 29, 2010 1:10 PM

I’m no Raiders fan, or McFadden homer, but I think if you gave McFadden an o-line like the one over there in Minnesota, He could be every bit as good as Peterson…Maybe not as strong a runner as AD but he sure as hellwouldn’t fumble as much, thats for sure

  27. Tdk24 says: Jan 29, 2010 1:31 PM

They need to resign Bruce, he was working on a 1 year deal.
I hope this can help McFadden too, he really needs longer spikes on his cleats. You would think that the equipment manager would know this.
