One Rams bid has strong ties to Toronto

We continue to learn more about the three current bids for the Rams, and the news doesn’t sound great for folks interested in keeping pro football in St. Louis.

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that one of the three bids is from a group with close ties to Toronto.  Dave Checketts, the owner of the St. Louis Blues, is the local bid.  He’s reportedly made good progress recently by adding Texas billionaire Gerald J. Ford to his group.

With that said, this statement by Miklasz should worry St. Louis fans: “Checketts is our best hope to secure a long-term future for the Rams in St. Louis.  Or to put it another way: Checketts IS the St. Louis offer.”

The identity of the third group isn’t clear, but it apparently isn’t local.

Howard Balzer reported the other day that the current leading bid isn’t from St. Louis, so Checketts apparently has some catching up to do.

According to the Rams’ lease, the Edward Jones Dome must rate among the
top 25 percent of NFL stadiums by 2015 or the team can opt out of the agreement.

  1. So, in the next five years we’ll have the Toronto Rams, the Los Angeles Jaguars, and the London Vikings… and a players strike. The magic will be lost.

  2. Bills fans have to be happy about this.
I couldn’t care less who comes here, as long as a team comes.
Although I could see an instant rivalry with the Bills, if it’s the Rams or some other team.

  3. Hey Florio, You have referred to it a few times now, so what factors determine if the Edward Jones Dome rates among the top 25%? Who determines the factors and whether they “rate” high?

  4. The Rams should go back to LA where the fans understand how the game of football is played — then the Blues should go to a place where fans understand how the game of hockey is played.
    Go Penguins!!

  5. Toronto doesn’t sell out the Bill games now.
Headline and story don’t match either… as you didn’t tell us anything about a Toronto bid.

  6. No way in hell the NFL approves the move of ANY team to Toronto, not with the Bills struggling to find support in that market.
ANY move in the NFL will wind up in LA, period.

  7. Do you think the owners want a team in LA?
The ratings are good there now, and they are always assured of multiple games. And did they support home town teams in the past?
More improtnatly, every owner can threaten his home town that he’ll move to LA if they don’t get luxury boxes, a new stadium, a break on taxes, etc.
Having the leverage that LA provides may be too good to lose.

  8. I think that if St. Louis moves then the Vikings will move to St. Louis since they have a stadium. The Vikings lease runs out in 2011 and it does not look good for a new stadium. The Vikings in St. Louis could still be in the NFC North and the Rams in LA can stay in the NFC West.

  9. Here in Toronto, not everyone likes the Bills. If we had our own team, we would sell out every game.
Keep the Bills in buffalo and send the Rams here!!

I know Dave Checketts, he lives very close to me. Very nice guy

Cool, maybe Dave should use you as a reference on his offer.

  11. This Toronto garbage is a non-story until L.A. gets a team first. I will admit that I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of a team in Canada it’s just not their time yet.

  12. Read the article before picking and choosing your content. The main point was that Checketts has firmed up his offer.
Why would the NFL move a team to Toronto with a team in Buffalo?

  13. Yeah, it’s all posturing. The Rams aren’t moving to Toronto. If anything it’s L.A. I’m with the oven though, if all those things happen, the NFL is in trouble.

  14. Well after the Rush Limbaugh lies came out (lies which were spread by Mike Florio and Greg Rosenthal) it would be funny to see the Rams move to Toronto and quite fitting.

  15. Why would the NFL move a team to Toronto with a team in Buffalo?

why? because the buffalo bills will be sold to and moved to los angeles
but that story does not even give any idea just who that “toronto group” is made up of. it does state who the other 2 groups are?

  16. Hey tormike…you do have your own team…the Toronto Argonauts…don’t hate on Bill Nation because we made like Jason and “fleeced” your fans!

that is CLASSIC!! kind of like you have your own baseball team and average about 20,000 per game. toronto is a sports joke unless you are wearing skates.

  18. Why the hell do these billionares want to move the Rams out of St. Louis? The fan base is great. Why the hell would people want to watch a team that has won 6 games in 3 years. You gotta be kidding me. You won’t get a fan base anywhere with that kind of record. Give me a break… these rich guys need to do their research. When the Rams were respectable, the stadium was packed every single game.

Not only do allot of fans here NOT like the Bills, but they want us to pay 400 bucks a seat too, to watch 2 teams that aren’t even ours.
Just some facts the ignorant don’t realize.

  20. The fan following there sucks. The team sucks. The city is in the middle of nowhere. Move the team to LA and add 2 games and fix the CBA.

  21. Rams have a nice following considering they just set the record for worst 3 year stretch in the modern NFL. The Rams are safe until 2025 (when the actual lease is up). A lot of people don’t realize it, but the value of the franchise is in the sweet lease deal they have with the Edward Jones Dome. It ranks up there with the best even if the dome itself isn’t that nice.

What’s classic…is a guy from buffalo bashing any city…Toronto has the jays, leafs, raptors….
and of course your Bills are half T.O’s(the original T.O. not the player 81) too

your math sucks. 1 game out of 8 doesnt equal one half, unless maybe you are using that f-ed up metric system!!! oh and why don’t you torontonians (or whatever it is you call yourselves) try and support your minor league argonauts, your blue jays (where you dont even sell out half the stadium) or the raptors (where most of your fans wonder how they bounce that basketball on ice) before you try to join up with the big boys!!
