Rex Ryan lets his finger do the talking

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who made a name for himself in his first year as a head coach by constantly running his mouth, communicated with another part of his anatomy while attending Saturday night’s “Strikeforce” event in South Florida.

Our pal Brooks has the photo of Ryan giving the middle finger.  (Jorge Sedano of 790 The Ticket and the Miami Herald passed the photo along to Brooks.)

Regardless of the words or behavior that precipitated the gesture, an NFL head coach needs to have slightly thicker skin.  (Figuratively, not literally.)  And if he was only “kidding around,” Ryan needs to consider tweaking his sense of humor, especially when in the presence of a stranger with a cell phone.

If Ryan can do neither of those things, why in the hell is he attending a public event like this in Miami?

Of course, it didn’t help matters that Ryan told the crowd over the P.A. system that he plans to beat the Dolphins twice in 2010.  (And that would be two more times than he beat them in two 2009 encounters.)

There also was a slightly newsy item in Ryan’s comments.  He said that he’ll be sending “a bunch” of his guys to work out with Randy Couture and Jay Glazer in the offseason.  Couture and Glazer have been providing MMA training to an increasing number of NFL players during the offseason.

If Ryan plans to continue to give random folk the finger, he might need some of that training for himself.

They identified themselves as Dolphin fans and thus this is his reaction. You tend to expect some sort of a class from a head coach, or at least you used to…
Yes everything about being at an MMA event screams class. Come on this is MMA your friends are just luck the finger is all you got. Next time he might snack on your friends.

  6. mustbechris says: Jan 31, 2010 2:33 PM

they said they “identified themselves as dolphins fans” which provoked the middle finger.
i lol’d. morons. they probably told him he’s a fat piece of shit, which provoked the middle finger.
i really don’t care. i’m surprised that’s all they got out of him. jets made it to the conference round and miami didn’t even make the playoffs, so the lolphins fans have a reason to be bitter i guess.

Relax, he was just making an honest and very human response to being told that the arena had run out of the always popular Extreme Nachos.

What malarkey. “Hi, Mr. Ryan, we sure are pleased to meet you — even as Dolphins fans!” I’m sure.
Ryan was at a professional wrestling event and doing his best to fit in. Give him a break.

So what? When Wade Phillips got a contract extension, you said “Giants, Redskins, and Eagles fans suddenly feel a little bit better about their day” (even though the Cowboys have won the division two out of the three years he’s been there and the fact that Phillips has a 12-8 record against the rest of the NFCE, which is tied for the best record of any NFCE coach against NFCE teams in that time period. Reid is 9-11, Coughlin is 12-8 and Gibbs/Zorn were 6-12).

Good, I’m glad to see someone who isn’t afraid of our hypersensitive media. The people he flicked off were Dolphins fans and identified themselves as such. So Ryan flicked them off, like any good Jets fan would.
We need more people who are real like this, not less. BTW, I’m a Pats fan.

  14. lee says: Jan 31, 2010 2:53 PM

The Jets are just the perfect team for this meatball to be coaching because he’s just like their meatball fan base. Hey Chef Boyardee, eeerrr I mean Rex. The Dolphins are going to be your worst nightmare in this division. Try teaching them some kick coverage before predicting one win against them let alone two. You only make my hate for you and that team stronger everytime you open your piehole. See ya next year Jackass!

  19. wkedklwnz says: Jan 31, 2010 3:03 PM

I am not a Ryan fan anymore, however I will say he was clearly having fun with the crowd, when he said “they are coming to beat Miami twice next year”.

    Uh, no. He doesn’t.

  30. igor79 says: Jan 31, 2010 3:51 PM

As a die hard Dolphin fan and New Yorker I almost harassed Rex Ryan when I saw him in a bank right before Christmas. I decided that since he was with his family I would save the smack talk. I now regret that. I should have pulled out my camera and poked his Pillsbury Dough-gut to see if he giggles.

  31. snnyjcbs says: Jan 31, 2010 3:54 PM

You have kiss ass, brown nose types, knock, knock. And than you have real men that are what they are like Ryan and could give a shit what you think. The country sure could use a few more just like him instead of all the punk bitches we are raising.

  32. texasPHINSfan says: Jan 31, 2010 3:56 PM

As a Dolphins fan, I don’t really care.
As a head coach, he’s a perfect representative of the Jets fanbase though.

“Florio loves starting trouble. Pint sized back-stabber and finger pointer.
The Jay Leno of football reporters.”
Leno is maybe a zillion times more credible and well-respected than Florio…and I say this as someone who can’t stand Leno.
I happen to fall into the “Rex is a classless, ridiculously obnoxious blowhard” camp, but for now I’m just on the side of whoever thinks this site is a complete disaster.
Florio is forever trying so very hard to instigate and start rumors, the majority of which either 1) aren’t true or 2) even if true, aren’t REMOTELY important to anyone other than the pint-sized, perma-smirking idiot who writes about them.
For further amusement, check out Florio’s above ‘story’ about Dwight Freeney, which he had to hastily retract when Freeney’s agent called 15 minutes later to confront him as a sleazy liar.
This site makes literally every other sports site out there look award-worthy. Profootballtalk is tabloid journalist at its most embarrassing.

  34. SDFan_inTX says: Jan 31, 2010 4:29 PM

Mike Florio, does it hurt when your pink panties ride up your tush like they do? Dude, why dont you trade those in for some boxers so your marbles can drop again.
Really??? Thats not how an NFL coach is supposed to act? I LOVE that Rex gave the finger to the Dolphin fans there. As a Charger fan I’d expect him to do the same to me too. Old school coaches need to come back. That kind of fun loving attitude, at of all places an MMA event, is expected, not frowned upon. In today’s PC world where nobody can do or say anything without offending somebody, I give two thumbs and middle fingers up to Flipasaurus Rex.

  35. WashingtonRedstorms says: Jan 31, 2010 4:47 PM

Yes Ryan is the supreme American male, we should all bow to him, he is the model on how will should all be.
As Dean Wormer says” Fat , Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life!”
Ryan will be a distant memory in a few years.
The Jets will go back to the Ken O’Brien green slime days next season.
Ryan is an attention whore, he did not get enough toys and hugs as a boy.

  36. Belichick for President says: Jan 31, 2010 5:12 PM

I’m a Pats fan, but good for Rex. Belichick’s nature is to ignore people, which he does. Rex’s nature is to tell you to go to hell and flip you off, which he does.
Better than Jim Caldwell, who would have just stood there with that stupid, confused look he always has on his face.

  37. racf617 says: Jan 31, 2010 5:21 PM

Ah, big surprise: the ever-classy Pats fans have to get a shot in at the Colts (jealous much?!) regardless of what the story—or, in the case of this website, NON-story—happens to be about.
The fact that your screen name is “Belichick for President” pretty much destroys any credibility you might have had. He’s literally the most widely loathed, misanthropic, unethical coach in all of sports. And, as of this year, his coaching decisions were ‘questionable’…and that’s putting it politely. I hate Rex Ryan, but I’d rather the NFL be filled with nothing but Rex Ryans than even one Belichick (who, by the way, seems to be mentally ‘losing it’ at a scarily rapid rate).
Even your own media writes about your team being washed up.
Thanks for reminding the rest of the football world that most of us would rather have the Jets, Dolphins, Bills or even a team comprised of serial killers succeed next year than the loathsome Patriots.
(By the way, I’ve dealt extensively with both Jets and Pats fans, and I can honestly say that no fanbase I’ve ever encountered is nearly as arrogant, classless and obnoxious as Pats fans are. There are exceptions, but the ones who post on here only to serve to prove that rule).

  45. fletcher720 says: Jan 31, 2010 7:15 PM

George C you are an idiot, and so are all you other morons. I’m sure the reason the Jets won 7 games this year is because their coach goes around acting like a high school drop out that doesn’t have the vocabulary to express himself. And leave it to all you Jets fans to get all hyped up and supportive of your head coach for this. Being a head coach in the NFL is a position of privledge, you are in the public eye and will/should be scrutinized for every idiotic move you make. You’ve got millions of young impressionable fans worshipping you because you just got their team into the playoffs (well technically the Colts did that), and you just showed them that waiving your middle finger around when someone says something you don’t like is the best way to handle the situation. Good job fatty! Go read a book. I’ll take the over on $50k.
