Ticket brokers say early market for game is soft

It all depends on perspective.

With an average price among brokers over $2,000, Super Bowl tickets have never seemed more outrageously expensive for buyers.  Brokers in Miami, however, say the market is actually softer than usual so far.

“It’s certainly a buyer’s market,” said Joellen Ferrer, a spokeswoman for StubHub.com.  (The average ticket price on Stubhub is $2,500.)

Thus far, Saints fans are outnumbering Colts fans as buyers at a 4:1 clip.  And that ratio should only get more uneven.

“We’re really expecting the Saints fans to come,” said Michael
Lipman, of Miami’s Tickets of America to the Miami Herald. “And they
will come. How much they’ll pay is another question.”

Ticket prices can rise as the game gets closer and the fans arrive in the host city.  That happened for the Colts-Bears Super Bowl here in Fort Lauderdale (yep, we’ve arrived) around Wednesday.

Either way, things have changed dramatically in a decade.  We knew friends that walked up and bought tickets for Super Bowl XXXVI between the Rams and Patriots and paid less than face value 30 minutes before the game.  (The aftermath of 9/11 and the lack of a week between conference championships and the Super Bowl were big factors then.)

Still, Saints fans that want to party but can’t afford tickets may as well stay in New Orleans. Or fly there instead. We have friends planning to go just to watch the game among friends.  It’s a lot cheaper, probably more fun, and there are certainly no rules against tailgating.

Watching a game at home is so much easier these days. I used to be a season ticket holder, but it just seemed ridiculous to pay that much money to watch the Browns lose every single week, every single year.

  2. jersey73 says: Jan 31, 2010 10:20 AM

The Superbowl isn’t designed for the fans to see in person. It’s a shame, but the reality. As diehard fans like me (who is a diehard Colts fan), I have a better view sitting on my couch watching my HDTV.
I am a high school teacher; fans like me can’t blow that much coin to see a Superbowl in person.

  3. Fan of Football says: Jan 31, 2010 10:21 AM

Of course it is, no Favre. It’s the boring plain milk Manning against the “You should all feel sorry for us” Saints. The SB lost all of its luster when Favre and the Vikes were robbed by the refs.

  4. MrHumble says: Jan 31, 2010 10:28 AM

It’s rather obvious by the facts of the article, ticket prices are soft because no one other than Saints fans want to see this crappy matchup. Not even Colts fans are excited about playing the NFC’s 5th or 6th best team. It doesn’t take an Einstein to figure it out. As a fan of a team that didn’t even make the playoffs, my wife and I were excited about going to Miami to perhaps watch the Cowboys or Vikings against the Colts but now we are only making a “pit stop” in Miami to go on a cruise.

  5. MrHumble says: Jan 31, 2010 10:40 AM

LOL…I would and have paid good money to see several good SB’s, but I can drive to the Bronx and see a “robbery and mugging” for free, any day of the week.

  6. facelessman says: Jan 31, 2010 10:45 AM

I dont know. I think if I had the money to blow it would be an experience of a lifetime. However 2000 bucks is a bit extreme. Someday people will put their foot down and not spend a ridiculous amount and force the NFL to lower prices. How embarassing to the league would it be to only have half a filled stadium for the super bowl. too many fans though with the money to spend for something like this.

  7. whatabucnmess says: Jan 31, 2010 10:46 AM

Im shocked they havent asked the government to pay for their fans to go to the game. The ask them for everything esle.

It’s a fairly elite group in this economy that can/will blow 5k+ (travel, 2 tickets, hotel, etc.) to witness what we already know will happen and take Monday off work as well. The Colts will have to beat the Saints and the officials in XLIV.

  9. Raiders757 says: Jan 31, 2010 11:01 AM

Ticket Brokers are nothing more than legalized ticket scalpers. They are scum and should be shut down. I hope they end up in the red with this event. Screw em’.
Now as for the game. “boring plain milk Manning”?! Are you kidding?!! He’s THE best QB in the NFL, and is very exciting to watch. Hardly “boring”. Sure, a Favre/Manning match-up would have been great, but the Saints are a damn good football team, and exciting to watch at that. I would much rather see the Saints in the big game over the boring Cowboys, so enjoy your cruise MrHumble. We should be glad the Cowboys aren’t in the Super Bowl. The media ball washing would be unbearable to withstand.
The Saints and the Colts were the two best teams in the regular season, so I don’t know where humble gets this 5th or 6th best team in the NFC crap from. This is the kind of Super Bowl match-up we’ve been waiting a long time to see. The two #1 seeds going at it for the title.

  10. RayDaMayor says: Jan 31, 2010 11:05 AM

    It’s the economy……welcome to reality.
Thank goodness the Vikings didn’t make the game or it would be even worse. Now count with me….1…2…3…4…5 forced turnovers. But we can always blame the refs….lame.

  11. MikeTysonWillEatYourChildren says: Jan 31, 2010 11:08 AM

THE MARKET FOR THE GAME IS SOFT? What kind of condescending, high brow, arrogant a-hole has just enough tact to charge per ticket more the the GDP for a sporting event a few hours in length. Go tell somebody in africa who has stepped on a land mine or had appendages hacked off with a chinese machete or an AK-47 that the “market is soft” with tickets fetching over $2000 USD.
By the way ticket brokers – don’t know if ya heard, our economy is in a proverbial shitstorm right now. Morgages will reset again soon for those with adjustable rate loans and others have their assets highly leveraged as it is. Then there are the few that aren’t knee deep in dogsh… ticket brokers – the same people with just enough common sense not to spend that much money with even an infinitesimally small amount of foresight which has strangely enough been developed by the few in my generation which don’t watch MTV.

Not according to Obama. It is better than it was this time last year, according to Obama, so if there is a decrease in business for the ticket brokers it has to do something other than the economy. Like the match-up.

  16. Rip says: Jan 31, 2010 11:50 AM

MrHumble – do you ever stop whining?
It must really kill you that the Saints were the best team in the NFC and are about to prove they are the best in the entire NFL. The Cowgirls sucked, the Queens choked, and the #1 Saints kept on going.
RaDaMayor – yup. The economy sucks but the average ticket price is over $2000, and they call that “soft”.

  17. awoods1906 says: Jan 31, 2010 11:50 AM

Raiders757, you are 100% correct. These two teams wer the best two teams in the league all year long. Favre and Manninr would have been a good draw but that doesn’t mean that’s the only good matchup.
Humble would have you believe that record unemployment, rising ticket prices, etc. are not the drivers. Funny the NFL said they expect to shatter viewing records so (assuming that is accurate) there is a huge interest in the game. People just aren’t willing to spend thousands on this right now. As a loyal Saints fan, I could get there for a couple of hundred bucks and have a place to stay. I will have a great SB party at my home in NC (relocated long before the storm). To counteract the negative stereotypes, I have a six figure income working for a fortune 50 company like most of my native New Orleans friends. Paying that kind of money to have worse seats than the 50 yard line seat I’ll have from my couch and getting the pleasure of watching the most terrible halftime shows in life just isn’t worth it.
Should be a great game with the 2 best QB’s in the league (Manning arguably the best ever). Good luck Saints/Colts – may the best team win.

  18. MrHumble says: Jan 31, 2010 11:52 AM

raiders757….i respect your opinion, i just happen to think that the cowboys, vikings and packers are all better than the saints who happened to play a fairly weak schedule and needed considerable “good fortune” to beat several very poor teams (rams and skins come to mind) during the season and some considerable assistance from the officials to win the nfc championship. there’s a reason the saints defense is rated as low as it is. it’s my opinion, and i think the fact that ticket sales are soft (if it weren’t for saints fans 4/1, this SB may not sell out) supports the thinking of the majority of the fans. People that can afford to go to the SB then determine if it has the makings of a good game…..like i said, i respect your opinion but i think the soft ticket sales (other than saints fans) supports my opinion.

the lockout and strike and hopefully for at least a year and with the attempt to use repacement scabs BUT charge the seat license suckers to pay top top and regular season prices to even watch scabs play 2 preseason games?
goodell is an idiot. the other topic is goodell might still have pro bowl week before even back in hawaii where he never should have moved it from- goodell and the other sons of old time owners who now control this league will destroy their golden goose.

  21. RayDaMayor says: Jan 31, 2010 12:15 PM

    Mr Humble,
You couldn’t be in a larger minority with your opinion….except for some Viking fans who remain quite vocal about being cheated on this site (5 turnovers lost the game for the Vikes, not the refs).
The Saints were #1 seed because they beat most every team that was on their schedule, including the Eagles, Giants, Patriots, Jets, Cardinals, Vikings, Falcons, all strong teams, plus many others.
The NFC Championship game set a record broken only if you go back 1/4 decade ago in ratings.
The Saints are for real and the rest of the football world knows this. 15-3 is not a shabby record considering the teams they beat. 1 of the 3 losses was due to the starters sitting in a meaningless game, and yes, the Cowboys did beat the Saints fair and square.
As expressed by awoods1906, I too make a nice income and could afford to drop $2,000 if that’s really what I wanted to do, but I prefer to enjoy the game with family and friends in my home theater on the big screen while hosting an all-day party at my home.
The NFL will make absolutely certain that every ticket is sold within their money machine.

  22. County K 66ers says: Jan 31, 2010 12:22 PM

Honestly who cares about ticket brokers not getting top dollar for over-priced seats. It has no bearing on the strength of the economy whatsoever. It is a change in spending choices.
The problem is that so many tickets are scooped up by the ticket brokers instead of going straight to the fans.

  23. awoods1906 says: Jan 31, 2010 12:23 PM

    Wow Humble… Let’s indulge your opinions…
Strength of schedule Vikes 44.7% Saints 43.8%. Your thought pattern applies to the Vikings as well.
You are saying all of this to defend a team that allowed the Ravens, who have no offense to score 31 pts, needed a miracle (sorry good forutne as you say) to beat the 49ers at home, got drug by Pit, Ari, Car, and loss to Chi. Wow.
Yes the Saints loss to the Cowboys and Bucs and then didn’t play the starters against the same Car team that beat the brakes off of Minn. So that you have your facts clear…
    This years final four…
NYJ – beat them by 14 in NY
Min – beat the by 3 at home
Ind – will meet on 2/7.
In terms of those games that we needed good fortune (STL/Was), we did win them with the same good fortune that you needed to beat SF. We also did it with our top 3 CB’s, starting outside LB, starting DT’s (in some cases both), starting left OT, leading receiver from last year, on the bench or on IR. Once your Def lost one LB it fell a part try loosing both Williams, EJ Henderson, and your top 3 cb’s, you are drafting in the top 5.
The Saints were the best team in the NFC all year (#1 seed) and is still the best team in the NFC. We loss to the Cowboys but beat every other playoff team on our schedule, Vikings, Cardinals, Eagles, NYJ, and NE. If you like the Vikes that’s fine but let’s just leave it at that.

  24. Jeff says: Jan 31, 2010 12:43 PM

Why don’t all these Vikings fans still whining on this site and elsewhere mention that the Vikings were penalized ONE FREAKING TIME for the first 59 minutes and 45 seconds of the game? And that one penalty was an obvious one that couldn’t be not called. Same thing for the 12 people in the huddle penalty. So before you complain ONE MORE TIME, you freaking losers, consider that.

  25. Florio-is-a-tool says: Jan 31, 2010 12:53 PM

Got to love how the demand for tickets has somehow evolved into a political discussion yet again. Keep it classy guy – only smart people insert political comments into sports.

  26. jgreen1570 says: Jan 31, 2010 12:59 PM

Did Humble really say the Packers are better than the Saints? I can understand bitter Minnesota fans proclaiming their team’s superiority, and Dallas did beat the Saints.
But the Packers??? I thought the Saints had spanked the Cardinals hard enough that even Packer fans a$$es were hurting.
And seriously. 13-3 regular season without even trying to win the last game. Blowout of the Cardinals. Close game with the Vikes where the Saints got a call that had no effect on the play (Favre threw the pick regardless of how he gets hit). If the Saints making the SB is on the tragedies of your life, consider yourself lucky.

    awoods,
Thanks you so much for saving me the time of telling this DUMB ars Humble guy whats what. He makes no sense and is on here just to complain and hate on the team that made it. No one gets to the superbowl and can be consider the 6th best team. The Saints are legit and have been the best team all year. All year long people talked about wanting to see the sainst and colts play in the superbowl and then talked about how unlikley it was to happen. Well it happened and I am excited to see who the two best teams in the league go at it.I will be doing so on my couch, in HD, with a better view and alot more money in my pocket. Its pointless to go to Miami to sit in bar down a mile down the road (no tailgating).
    but anyway..

  28. Fan of Football says: Jan 31, 2010 1:02 PM

    awoods1906,
Who cares how NO and Minn did against other teams when you have the NFCC game to directly compare them two. It was painfully obvious that Minnesota was the better team, by a wide margin at that. They beat themselves, plain and simple. The fact that the refs calls went NO’s way for the majority of the time didn’t help matters.
Bottom line? The best team in the NFC is not in the SB.

  29. SF Saints Fan says: Jan 31, 2010 1:19 PM

    awoods1906:
Well said. The two top seeds are facing off in the Super Bowl. On top of that, the Saints and Colts were tied for or where the #1 seed in their respective conferences all season long……. Dominance by both teams and #1 seeding for both teams.
I am one of the Saints fans going to the game. Our family income is such that we can afford outrageous ticket broker scalper prices, but I believe the market this year for tickets will continue to weaken and that tickets will decrease to much nearer to face value than what they are going for now.

  30. tombrookshire says: Jan 31, 2010 1:28 PM

Gee, soft market, huh? Coming out of an economic downturn similar to the great depression, the scalpers, otherwise known in this blog as “ticket brokers” are reporting a “soft market.” Maybe Americans are tired of being gouged for everything from gasoline to food to ATM usage fees. Perhaps unemployment checks and part-time grocery store pay don’t quite cover the cost of a SB ticket anymore! Sorry to hear it, scalper scumbags.

  31. FootballOnly says: Jan 31, 2010 1:28 PM

LMAO……I’m not a Colts, Saints, Vikings or Jets fan but for those idiots that think the Saints are deserving of the SB becuz they were a #1 ranked seed……keep dreamin’
I ain’t looking for no back and forth freakin’ trash talk becuz it’s obvious that’s all some of you can do. this mrhumble hit the nail on the head however he should realize that there is no room for objectivity in a trash talkin’ chat room. Anyone who thinks the Saints are a better team than the Cowboys, Packers or Vikings is one of the three a)homer , b) hates the 3 above mentioned teams (i do) or c) doesn’t know chit about football.
Ya’all have your fun trash talkin’ and pumpin’ yourselves up above your saints……but mrhumble is right, there ain’t a whole lot of the rest of us that are drinkin’ your kool-aid. No need to respond cuz i have already heard the same chit from the same crazed saints fans. while the saints are busy trash talkin’ (greg williams and fans) the colts are quietly preparing to perform surgery.

  32. FootballOnly says: Jan 31, 2010 1:41 PM

One last comment for the homers and fools……I have a lot of friends who live in the Big Easy and are die hard Saints fans and were at the championship game. Almost everyone of them has said that just prior to the Vikings screwing up at end of regulation, Saints fans all around them were congratulating the Vikings fans on being the superior team and how they couldn’t believe that a team could shut down the Saints offense like the Vikings did, overcome all the turnovers and still dominate on offense and throughout the whole game. It’s funny how some fortunate calls in OT now have you trash talkers singing a different tune about actually “winning” that game. I could give a freakin damn about the Vikings, Cowboys or Packers but you Saints fans that now choose to sing a different tune are hilarious to listen to.

  33. PackFaninPackLand says: Jan 31, 2010 1:56 PM

THAT would have been the most watched TV show in television history.

  34. Pier588 says: Jan 31, 2010 1:59 PM

Humble – you’re drunk on “sour grapes” wine.
Grandpa Brett had 4 whole quarters to score more points than the Saints and earn a trip to Miami. Alas, that didn’t happen and the more deserving team – as in the one that won – THE SAINTS – are in south Florida prepping to play in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Brett is prepping for his annual off season waffling and the rest of the Vikes (the losers) are shining their golf clubs.
The 4 months left til it thaws enough in Minnisoda to swing the sticks gives all the “Purple Passion” drinkers plenty of timeget drunk and wallow in self pity for not proving to be “good enough” on the playing field to make it to Miami and play for the title.
Which – as history indicates – is a good thing because the Chungkings would have choked again and stepped into undesputed first place as the “LOSERS” of the most Super Bowls in NFL history. Be glad they aren’t playing for that distinguished record and are focused on golf.

  35. Rip says: Jan 31, 2010 2:11 PM

Football only- The Vikes got beat by the better team. Deal with it. And no, no one in the Big Easy was congratulating the Vikes – they lost, dumbass. I was there.
Oh, wait, I forgot. The best teams always drop the ball 5 or 6 times a game. What was I thinking?

    FootballOnly,
Great secondhand account. I have a first hand account though, seeing as I was actually at the game.
I saw that happen zero times. There were 5 vikings fans sitting in my general vicinity. Zero people congratulated them at any point.
I did see a lot of rejoicing when the Saints WON the game by making a 40 yard field goal though. I saw a lot of Vikings fans talk about how their team had shot themselves in the foot. I tend to agree with their analysis.
Good teams play well in big games. In that regard, the vikings are not a good team.

  38. Rip says: Jan 31, 2010 2:14 PM

Personally, I think there are maybe 5-6 Viqueen fans that have multiple accounts and nothing better to do since their team can’t win when it matters, so they come on here and whine like little school girls.
Anyone that thinks a team that can’t hold on to the ball is the better team is either an idiot, or doesn’t know anything about football.
    SKOL Vik -er, ne’mine.

  39. Q says: Jan 31, 2010 2:18 PM

How did the Vikings beat themselves? There was only one unforced turnover in that game. All the other fumbles were caused by Saints defenders punching the ball out. The Viking got beat, straight up. They need to learn how to tuck the ball.

  40. SFrancis1680 says: Jan 31, 2010 2:31 PM

  42. Grrrr05 says: Jan 31, 2010 2:56 PM

Wow really??? For the loser that thinks the Saints aren’t deserving to be playing in the Super Bowl….only 4 other teams to play a 16 game schedule in NFL history have ever started 13-0. And they did it with several players injured on defense for many of those games. They were #1 in the NFC ALL YEAR LONG. Either you’re 1) Really bitter or 2) Really stupid. Or quite possibly, both. And moron, of course the game is sold out. It’s been sold out. We’re talking about brokers. Since you obviously don’t know what this is, let me explain. It’s when someone buys up a lot of tickets and tries to re-sell them for 200% of their face value. Dang, what a bad matchup we have… #1 vs. #1 seed. Give me a break.

Rip don’t tell me you were one of the 500,000 that claimed to be at the game too… It’s quite easy to distinquish which posters were actually at the game and which one’s were probably stealing the signal from their neighbor’s cable. Just as it is natural for “some” saints fans to believe what they perceive, the rest of us chose to believe what we saw. LMAO
As to something football related, I hope the SB goes into overtime and I truthfully wouldn’t care which team won, as long as it was done by the first team to have the ball and they scored on a FG. I along with other purist football fans (and our buddy Florio, lol) agree that no football game should be decided by a flip of the coin and a FG. Another issue the NFL needs to change is full time officiating (and this has nothing to do with the saints/vikes outcome) but some of the greatest coaches ever, Landry, Shula, Grant, Stram and Chuck Noll lobbied for full time refs way back in their era’s and it still remains the only major sport without full time officicals. No b.s to Rip and da’ boys, these rules need to be changed and only when the game of all games, the Superbowl, ends with a sudden death FG will this rule be changed.

Well Humble you have at least one more factless, emotion driven person with you. Bottom line, I don’t deal in baseless arguments. I posted the data/facts. I believe that every Sunday/Monday/Thursday/Saturday the best team wins. That doesn’t mean the most talented but on that day, including prep, coaching, adjustments etc. the best team wins.
Childress is stupid , not throwing the challenge flag, 12 men in the huddle, etc. Add that with a RB that puts the ball on the ground, a QB who throws INT’s at the worst time, and a defense that is in the TOP of the league in takeaways and you get what you got. But so that those of you who watched your first game last week, I’ll share a few headlines from October 2008 when these two teams met last and essentially the same scenario in reverse. Saints beat the Vikes in all categories except turnovers and score. Sounds oddly similar and I doubt if many of you were outraged about any of things that drive your posts.

Also, on the topic of cheap shots… Feel free to check out this post about your Savior Favre. This is about his $10,000 fine during preseason – his “cheap shot” against a defender that put him out of the game. Can’t wait for the hypocrites to defend this one.
