Bears hire Mike Martz

The coach that no one wanted finally has gotten the job that no one wanted.

Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator
of the Chicago Bears.

As we hear it, coach Lovie Smith wanted Martz from the outset of the search process, but G.M. Jerry Angelo resisted.  With multiple candidates declining the job and/or a chance to interview for it, Martz eventually became the only real option.

As Larry Mayer of the team’s official web site points out, Smith now has three former head coaches on his staff — Martz, offensive line coach Mike Tice (Vikings 2001-05), and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli (Lions 2006-08).

And if they don’t help Lovie turn things around, the four of them can look for work together in 2011.

Good news for Cutler bad news for Forte who wants to bounce back from his subpar season last year. Can’t wait to see how the offense is going to look next year. Now Lovie needs to find a DC to get the defense back where it used to be.

  7. Midway Monster says: Feb 1, 2010 4:08 PM

    RIP Jay Cutler.
I guess we will find out just how quick that release really is.
You better start using some of that pull you have with management to find some O line help and FAST!
Can we also put Hester in the slot now where he belongs? PLEASE?

    There are Jay Cutler fans?

  11. pitch87mph says: Feb 1, 2010 4:09 PM

I disagree… best thing that ever happened to Jay Cutler. He’ll have the opportunity to sling it around, won’t be crucified for turnovers (see Kurt Warner) as long as he produces enough big plays, and will be the focal point of the offense. If Martz can make Shaun Hill look like a competent starter, he could do wonders for Jay Cutler. I think this match will end up being one of those tandems no one ever expected to work, but ends up producing remarkable results. Martz may be an a-hole, but he knows offense. And given no one else wanted the job, the Bears got lucky enough to find an elite quality offensive mind. If Lovie can keep the egos in check just enough to maintain a working relationship, I think this could work out quite well.

  12. spliffbunker says: Feb 1, 2010 4:10 PM

as you heard it or as you read in the Sun-Times yesterday?
I thought the take on PFT was Lovie didnt want him cos he might threaten his job

Exactly Florio..as a Bears fan this is a win win situation. If the Bears do well, as I predict they will, then this move is good.
If they suck again this year and go 8-8 or worse, then the Bears clean house starting with Jerry Angelo.
Play calling last year caused us at least 2-3 losses. The rest came off Cutler’s INT’s and our horrid Defense.

  15. Santo's stumps says: Feb 1, 2010 4:11 PM

As a cynical Bears fan this is the perfect hire to ensure that this whole mess gets totally blown up at the end of next season. Also it may be one of the most entertaining seasons in Bears history. Martz is going it have to teach his complicated system to Hester, Knox, Bennet and Aromashodu who couldn’t get on the field until the last third of the season and who aren’t exactly mental giants as it appears to me. Besides blowing it all up, this is the best solution! I can’t wait for training camp!!!

  17. NelsonLRodriguez says: Feb 1, 2010 4:13 PM

as a REAL Bears fan, I love the pick. The lovie crew has one year to make it work and Mike Martz has proved himself to be someone who can bring quick change.
Can’t wait to see how this shakes up for next year!

    Rest of NFC North

  19. GiantsDefenseRules says: Feb 1, 2010 4:17 PM

I think it may be safe to say thaty the Bears will be picking in the top 5 or 10 in 2011.
This team is about to implode with the Angelo-Smith-Martz power struggle, Jay Cutler’s lack of progress and their lack of overall talent on offense.
Packers and Vikings can fight for the free pass to the playoffs over the next 3-5 years.

  20. garretmustgo says: Feb 1, 2010 4:23 PM

Ouch…. this is why this organization will continue to struggle offensively, decisions like this prove that places like Chicago are destined to fail.. Martz will improve the offence today but in a year or two, watch out for the Bulger effect

  21. What's Ur Angle says: Feb 1, 2010 4:25 PM

If you thought 26 INT’s was something, wait till you see Cuntler exceed that number with this ‘chuck it around the yard’ offense next year. Should be awesome! LOL

  25. Rawhide says: Feb 1, 2010 4:29 PM

Cutler has the arm to run Martz system. Just gotta now find a good pass blocking o-line and smart enough WRs.

  26. purpleguy says: Feb 1, 2010 4:30 PM

Let’s look at this based on an impartial view of historical Martz offenses: First, his offenses minimize tight end use — the Bears best receiver is a tight end. Second, Martz offenses require a good O-line — the Bears O-line isn’t. Third, a Martz offense requires precise WR route running — not a forte of the Bears inexperienced WRs. Fourth, and most important, a Martz offense requires an accurate QB capable of making multiple quick decisions — did Cutler show even a hint of that this year? Equally important, when has Martz ever shown the flexibility to adapt “his” offensive system to the personnel available? This hire should go real well.

  27. Midway Monster says: Feb 1, 2010 4:32 PM

Pervy I thought you spent most of your time making commercials these days? Let me guess, MANCRUNCH get all the publicity it needed and you got laid off?

  28. 1stngoal says: Feb 1, 2010 4:34 PM

How is this bad for Matt Forte??? Forte will flourish in this system ala Marshall Faulk. Forte has already proven a more than capable receiver out of the backfield and he is more of an off-tackle and open field threat than an ‘in between the tackles’ runner. I think this move will pay statistical dividends to players like Forte, TE Greg Olson, and Johnny Knox. I think the only hitch is whether the formidable ego’s of ‘Planet Cutler’ and ‘Planet Martz’ can co-exist and make this a productive relationship.
    Just my humble opinion…

  29. MarkTroy says: Feb 1, 2010 4:35 PM

It would be a good hire for the Bears if Jay Cutler were Kurt Warner.
You sir, are no Kurt Warner.
Oh, and the Offensive line still sucks and with late round draft picks only able to help a couple years from now (too late)… the Bears are doomed to failure … ahahhahahahahaha

    . . . . .
LOL. Lousy comparison, considering that SF had NO QB to run Martz’ offense. Cutler will be vastly superior, even though he does suck out loud.. just not nearly as loudly as any SF QB since Jeff Garcia.

  31. hetrick33 says: Feb 1, 2010 4:36 PM

Pervy Harvin…I love how you use one teams rankings to talk about Mike Martz record as a coordinator, did you happen to look at who was QB and the wide receivers were on that team? The guy made John Kitna a 4,000 yard passer. You can say many things about the guy (total egomaniac) but you cannot disagree with his record as an offensive coordinator. I understand he had great weapons on the greatest show on turf but he has been successful at improving offenses everywhere he has gone.

  32. huthutHUT says: Feb 1, 2010 4:39 PM

  41. wxwax says: Feb 1, 2010 5:19 PM

If I’m a Bears fan I’m very nervous about this hire.
Will they get the egomaniac Martz who couldn’t work with another conservative, defense-first coach in Mike Singletary?
Or will they get the Martz who worked pretty well with Dick Vermeil?
I hope Martz has been humbled by his short stay in the wilderness. I guess we’ll find out.

  42. nasheagles says: Feb 1, 2010 5:24 PM

Funny how bears fans have the balls to rip the vikes for ANYTHING.
yeah, it really sucked this year playing meaningful football after the month of NOVEMBER you douche’s
Its gonna be a GREAT year to be a fan of any team in the NFC north outside of chicago, if nothing else just for the 2 easy wins against chicago.
Detroit gets out of the cellar this year, and chicago will quickly take their place. Vikes will easily 3peat NFC north champs even with Tjack, it sure didnt matter last season you tools.

  44. edgy1957 says: Feb 1, 2010 5:31 PM

I know that a lot of people think that Martz is anti-run but that’s simply not true. He worked the run in at St. Louis and Marshall Faulk went over 1300 yards for 3 years in a row. Faulk’s injuries forced them to go with away from the run for 2 years, especially when Trung Canidate proved to be a bust but that’s why they went after Steven Jackson.
As the OC for the Lions – good luck trying to find a RB on that team – he didn’t call many runs but I bet you wouldn’t, either and the 49ers actually ran 40 more times than they did the year before.
It has escaped the notice of his critics that they ran the ball 61 times fewer this year with Cutler at the helm and that was with the same O/C as the year before. If Martz can convince Cutler that a team wins championships and a prima donna loses then they’ve got a chance to be better.
The Greatest Show On Turf wouldn’t have succeeded if they didn’t have a successful run game AND it fell apart once that happened.

Ah,I just love it when the Windbag City (Chicago)members come out to post about their worthless team!
Martz,a man who is built for a dome offense will fail in the shitty outdoors of the Windbag City.A big problem will be the Bears young receivers finishing their routes. Cutler had a handful of interceptions in 2009 that were caused by receivers bailing on their routes, and Cutler throwing the ball to where they were supposed to be; in Martz’s offense, if the receivers don’t finish their routes, another stellar year of Cuntler picks.
Martz will cut back Matt Forte’s exposure in the offense as well. Chicagos”wish we were” identity as a “running team” co-existing with Martz’s pass-happy playbook with be a blunder.
Oh well,at least Lovie and Martz can resume their Mancrunch ways that they enjoyed in St. Louis .

  48. CaptainFantastik says: Feb 1, 2010 5:37 PM

Hey Pervy…as much as I hate Martz for railroading Kurt Warner’s career he has a Super Bowl ring as an O-coordinator and a SB appearance as a head coach. That’s certainly more than Chilly can say.

  49. Jabberwocky says: Feb 1, 2010 5:43 PM

People on here saying Forte will be hurt by Martz being the OC are complete morons, and know nothing about football. He’ll have plenty of room to run cause of the spread formation, and is a perfect fit cause he’ll catch like 75 balls next year.

  50. GreatGallopingGhosts says: Feb 1, 2010 5:52 PM

I am cautiously optomistic. At least he has handled a passing QB before and anything is probably better that Turner offense. He might also be able to bring out the best of their young receiving corps. Now let’s hope for some surprise stars out of their OL draft picks. Wasn’t Johnny Knox a 5th rounder that no one considered?

  51. MNRunLeft says: Feb 1, 2010 5:53 PM

Amazing how Bears fans can talk any trash about the Vikings or any of their players at this point. Chicago may have made the biggest move in the division this offseason trading for Cutler, or atleast they thought they did. Funny how many Bears fans were proclaiming themselves favorites in the North only to see their prized “franchise QB” and their season be nothing but a disappointment. Yes the Vikings choked against the Saints, but from the way Bears fans were talking before the season started they should be playing this weekend, not sitting at home.

  52. Alzado's Vein says: Feb 1, 2010 5:57 PM

Poor Bears fans. Marc Trestman should have been offered the job. Martz is too arrogant, and too confident in his outdated scheme, which is why hes been out of work for 2 years.
Martz is like the Pontiac Fiero, cool for a couple years, but now you wouldn’t be caught dead in one. Scrap heap pick by the Bears.

“Martz will cut back Matt Forte’s exposure in the offense as well. Chicagos”wish we were” identity as a “running team” co-existing with Martz’s pass-happy playbook with be a blunder.”
No, this is your opinion and pure conjecture. You really don’t have any idea on how his scheme will be modified. He did it in San Fran, he can surely do it in Chicago. It’s clear the Bears don’t have exactly the correct personnel to run his “true” spread offense. It will be a shell of his Ram days cause Tice is also aboard- their philosophies are quite different.
