Tampering charges could be on the horizon for Rex Ryan

The good news is that Jets coach Rex Ryan possibly has come up with a way to get people to quit talking about his middle finger misadventures.  The bad news is that the diversion could get him in a lot more trouble than the flipping of a bird.

Per Tim Graham of ESPN.com, Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha wants to be a Jet.  And Asomugha says that he has spoken not only to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis regarding the possibility, but also to Ryan himself.

Uh-oh.

The problem is that Ryan can’t talk to Asomugha about acquiring the shut-down cornerback’s rights.  Even if Asomugha intiated the contact, Ryan has an absolute obligation to refrain from speaking to the player, and to immediately report the contact from Asomugha to the league office.

Here’s the relevant language of the Anti-Tampering Policy:  “If a club is contacted by a player (or his representative)
who is under contract to or whose negotiating rights are held by another club,
and such player had not been given permission to deal with other clubs, or
such player is not in a permissible negotiating period under the terms of an
operative collective bargaining agreement, then the contacted club is
prohibited from talking or otherwise dealing with the player or his
representative, and the contacted club must immediately report such contact
to the owner or operating head of the club which holds the player’s rights.”

And consider the Berkeley-educated Asomugha’s comment — “Me and Revis have been talking to Rex to try to do something.”  The choice of words implies multiple direct communications between Asomugha, who has two years remaining on his deal with the Raiders, and Ryan.

Of course, Asomugha likely would invoke the Lawyer Milloy defense, claiming after letting the cat out of the bag that he was misquoted and/or that he misspoke.  But at a time when Ryan is proving that he’s as reckless and unpredictable as a dog driving a Dodge, the league has no choice but to deal with the situation, with or without a tampering claim being made by the Raiders.

Then again, if anyone thinks that the Raiders will be bashful about bashing the Jets over this one, consider the beliefs of owner Al Davis that the Patriots tampered with receiver Randy Moss prior to the trade that sent him to New England.

  3. kuze says: Feb 1, 2010 2:53 PM

He probably meant that he talked to Revis and that Revis mentioned it to Ryan, and that Rex wants him.
That said, I doubt the Raiders would trade him.

  4. Paulitik says: Feb 1, 2010 2:55 PM

Man, how sick would the Jets be with Nmandi and Revis? Scary. Hopefully the tampering accusations will hinder this.

  5. City_Native says: Feb 1, 2010 2:56 PM

    Two thoughts:
    1) The Jets tampered? Thats odd. Thats twice this year. The first being Crabtree.
    2) After watching Revis closely in the play-offs, Asomougha is the better corner. New York hype gets Revis more attention.

  6. leatherneck says: Feb 1, 2010 2:56 PM

The Jets do this a lot apparently.

When the last time someone actually got penalized for tampering?

  12. RichieBugs83 says: Feb 1, 2010 3:00 PM

I love Rex and can totally relate to his bombastic personality. I, however, am a moron and thus should/would never be put in charge of a multimillion dollar collection of manpower where every single move I make is caught on tape or otherwise made public. When Rex goes down in flames, which he inevitably will, it is going to be EPIC. Definitely a future for him in Pro Wrestling though.

  13. Junior says: Feb 1, 2010 3:00 PM

Hard to believe considering that Nnamdi is usually very careful about what he says on the record.
Also seems odd given that he was proudly pointing to the Raiders logo on his uniform during his introduction last night.

  17. BleedGreen says: Feb 1, 2010 3:02 PM

I think it all depends on what Ryan said. If Nnamdi said ‘Hey I wanna be a Jet’ and Ryan said ‘Thats nice. We can talk about it after you have the proper permission to discuss such things.’ and hung up the phone, then wheres the tampering?

  18. this class sucks says: Feb 1, 2010 3:03 PM

Pretty stupid, but man imagine if those two guys were on the same team? I live in the bay and have seen Nnamdi a lot and this guy is the best I have seen since Champ Baily in his prime. Revis had a great year but I think as teams adjust to him his number will go down like Nnamdi’s did but if they were both on the same team it would be a standout defense, even more so.
Maybe Jones and picks for Nnamdi? Jets fans, would you trade Sanchez and Jones for Nnamdi and Russell?

  19. Ronald McDonald says: Feb 1, 2010 3:03 PM

and to think I was wondering what we would talk about all off-season when it comes. It looks like Mr. Bigglesworth will give us plenty to read (and talk) about.
    – note, I don’t know why I insulted Mr. Bigglesworth by implying he is Rex Ryan, but seeing his mug on the nypost made me think of that damn cat.

  20. kazkal says: Feb 1, 2010 3:05 PM

  21. Junior says: Feb 1, 2010 3:05 PM

Not sure where he said he wanted to be a Jet Florio. Mentions Revis going to Oakland or something else, but never says he wants to be a Jet.
More speculation by PFT I guess.

  22. Clay's Jock Strap says: Feb 1, 2010 3:07 PM

But, if your name is Brett Favre none of this matters… You just tell ‘ol Roger Goodell that you always chat with rival team coaches on you cell and he’ll take you at your word, regardless of how tampering is defined. So, depending on Rex’s status is as a money maker for the league, he may or may not be in trouble. If you are brINT Favre you can basically admit to exactly what the rule states and the league will look the other way.

  23. RFM says: Feb 1, 2010 3:08 PM

I’m just glad I never spent coin on an Asomugha jersey. Trade his ass to Detroit.

  24. 8man says: Feb 1, 2010 3:08 PM

It will be interesting to see if the NFL community follows up with the same zeal they’d have if it were the Patriots.
And of course the same goes for the readers and writers of this website.
That being said, I find it hard too believe the Jets are the only team to ever do this, allegedly.

  25. ampats says: Feb 1, 2010 3:10 PM

Since the Jests returned to earth once again within one week Cryin Fat Ryan flips off Dolphin fans and then tampers with one of the premier players in the league.
Enjoy paying the fines and losing the draft picks Woody!
Can’t wait to see what additional antics the leader of Jests nation has this off season.

  26. Bill.Polian says: Feb 1, 2010 3:11 PM

The Jets will get a slap on the wrist at most. Goodell would never do anything to hurt his beloved Jets.

  27. NinerNation says: Feb 1, 2010 3:18 PM

Why does anyone think anything will happen to the Jets?
Goodell sweeps all the tampering under the rug to protect his friendly neighbor. Nothing will happen, and the Jets will just keep on tampering.

  28. dvdvill says: Feb 1, 2010 3:19 PM

This blog conveniently leaves out the part where Nnamdi Asomugha suggested he wanted Revis to go to Oakland. Should Nnamdi and the Raiders get charged with tampering too?

  29. footballisking says: Feb 1, 2010 3:19 PM

Scary thing is Al Davis just might do it :(……that would be a nightmare for all other afc teams…. belichick has cleaned Al’s clock with recent trades so you know Al is on speed dial… I am assuming bill made a quick call

  30. SBS0311 says: Feb 1, 2010 3:20 PM

You’re all as laughable as this argument. Asomugha says something moronic and it’s immediately believed to be 100% true?
We’ll see as much of this come as the Crabtree charge, which was a bunch of bogus BS as well.
If the Niners had their ‘evidence,’ they wouldn’t have dropped the charge just because Crabtree signed when they could’ve received draft pick compensation.
Did the Bears drop everything against SF because they got Briggs back?
Ryan, the Jets, and Jet fans could care less if he’s message board convicted — fact is, nothing significant will come as a result of this yammering by Asomugha.

  38. Albert040907 says: Feb 1, 2010 4:06 PM

Why are the jets punished if the player goes to the coach who was there for the practices and a TV appearance. Why isn’t the player held accountable? The raiders still have a right to say no deal. Didn’t Mcnabb recruit TO at the pro bowl? Was he hit with tampering charges?

    A little knowledge for you:
    1) You dont get draft pick compensation for tampering. The team that tampers forfeits their pick.
    2) The Jets traded for Braylon Edwards the day after Crabtree signed. Coincidence?

  41. GhostofFlorioPast says: Feb 1, 2010 4:24 PM

This is the same guy – Ryan – who stole a huge victory from his own team during the Patriot’s perfect regular season by calling a time out. The defense held on the play, but the Patriots got another chance and scored. Sorry Ravens, you deserved that one.

  42. Hap says: Feb 1, 2010 4:37 PM

Ryan should take a page out of Belichic’s book and learn how to fly illegally under the radar.

  43. Matty Ice says: Feb 1, 2010 4:47 PM

  44. VoxVagina says: Feb 1, 2010 4:54 PM

Agree with everyone who says Aso is better than Revis. Don’t get me wrong, Revis is great, but Nnamdi is the best, period. The NY media praises him a little too much. Put Asomugha under the NY spotlight and he will be bigger than Revis

  45. LebronJeremy says: Feb 1, 2010 5:06 PM

I don’t get to see much of Namdi but Revis looked as good as I’ve ever seen in the postseason. considering that I hate Rex Ryan and Dirty Sanchez, I hope this union between the two best corners in the NFL never comes to fruition…unless it’s for my team.

  46. dcrespo24 says: Feb 1, 2010 5:10 PM

    Florio, Florio, Florio:
    Please print the whole quote:
“Me and Revis have been talking to Rex to try to do something,” Asomugha said. “You may see us in the future. There’s a little bit of talk going on. Either he’s coming to Oakland or something else will happen.”
After reading the actual quote, you could argue that Asomugha was trying to spur the Raiders to acquire Revis, not becoming a jet.
    The BSPN article also says:
    - Revis and Asomugha on the field together would elicit memories of Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes for the Oakland Raiders in the 1980s.
“In a league where the art of man-to-man has kind of gone out of style, that could bring it back,” Asomugha said. “You always want that as a player, to have that guy on the other side of you that’s equally as talented and can make plays. It fuels you a little bit. We’d been joking around with [AFC coach] Norv Turner throughout practices all week, and with [NFL commissioner] Roger Goodell. He said they probably wouldn’t allow us on the same team.” -
Apparently Florio, you dont know a joke when you read it.
In fact, sources other BSPN are reporting that Nnamdi was using to Pro Bowl to “playfully recrui” Revis:

    Here’s the WHOLE story……..
    BSPN
It’s bad enough for teams opposing the New York Jets that their top WR gets marooned on Revis Island. Soon, their No. 2 WR might have a new home on Asomugha Isthmus.
This nightmarish scenario was brought up by Nnamdi Asomugha to ESPN.com’s AFC East blogger Tim Graham down at the Pro Bowl, and the Raiders CB was “dead serious” about it. “Me and Revis have been talking to Rex [Ryan] to try to do something,” Asomugha said. “You may see us in the future. There’s a little bit of talk going on. Either he’s coming to Oakland or something else will happen.”

Yeah, I can really see that Asomugha was jumping all over the Jets bandwagon.
Next story will be how Nnamdi is disgruntled and wants out of Oakland.
    Idiots.

Marshawn Lynch and DeSean Jackson, on the other hand…well, let’s just say I’m guessing they weren’t taking a full courseload during their years at Cal.

  53. mpoles says: Feb 1, 2010 8:10 PM

Oh come on, this is a non-story. If you actually read the ESPN article, it’s clear that it’s just two very good players speculating how good they would be on the same defence. Anything about “talking to Rex” and / or Revis coming to Oakland is just jokey comments.
PS Revis is a very, very good cornerback, but better than Asomugha? Not even close. The statistics put up by the media in the postseason showing how Revis limited some of the best WRs in the league to a total of 30-something catches in 16 games? In 16 games this year, Asomugha allowed 13 complete passes against him.
In a quarter of a century of following the NFL seriously, Asomugha is the second best CB I have seen – ahead of the likes of Mike Haynes, Albert Lewis, Champ Bailey, Hanford Dixon, Charles Woodson and Revis. Only Deion Sanders has been a better CB in that period. He doesn’t get the attention because Oakland doesn’t get on national television (or for that matter local television when they’re at home) and if you do watch games, QBs simply avoid him.

If Revis has an island, then Asomugha has a continent… In coverage Nnamdi is better, and he is probably the best tackling CB in the league too. If the Raiders lose him, and keep the Walrus I’m done. I’d rather be a Rams fan

  58. mrzazz41387 says: Feb 2, 2010 12:09 PM

blah blah, no tampering chargers will come. The only team dumb enough to get caught for tampering is the 49ers. As a Jets fan, there is no way I can complain if we nab him. Knowing Al Davis, he would rather give up his kidney then Asomugha. No one wants to go to the Raiders.

  59. Tdk24 says: Feb 2, 2010 12:09 PM

Nhamdi in a Jets uniform would expose Revis for the overated CB that he is. Of course he would get more int’s, because they never, ever throw at Nhamdi.

  60. BboyFiasco says: Feb 2, 2010 1:31 PM

Im a diehard Raiders fan and this Article made me laugh… First off Nhamdi is 3x better corner than Revis.. People throw at Revis all the Time.. He gets the win most of the time but like Nhamdi said.. Hes lucky if he gets thrown at once a Game.. that makes a total of 16 attempts per year.. Thats insane!!!.. QBs literally fear Asomugah.. Heres a list that dont even bother looking his way ( Manning, Brady, Shaub, Delhomme, Rivers, Cutler, Flacco, Sanchez ) Every game Revis gets 4 or five balls thrown his way atleast.. With that being said if the Jets give us two First Rounders and some players or something like that than they can have him..
    Top 5 CORNERS List
    1. Asomugah
    2. C. Woodson
    3. Revis

For all the Raiders fans in here, and all the Revis haters, think about this, Revis dominated every single receiver he covered this year in man-to-man coverage. In the playoffs he dominated Ochocinco, Jackson, and Wayne. Peyton had to go to the 2nd and 3rd WR’s. So Revis is still young but he is coming up and starting to be one of the best, Asomugha is still number 1 right now but Revis is coming for that number 1 spot, and he WILL get there. If they were in the same defense, QB’s would be scared to play that team, which ever it will be.
