I call McCarthy Mumbles because he mumbles when he speaks. Not a difficult nickname to figure out.
Free agency simply does work. Ask New Orleans, Dallas, San Fran, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New York, Arizona. They all made it to Super Bowls thanks to huge free agent signings. And I think Minnesota did pretty well this year with their big free agent signing, as well.
You point out one team who fails in free agency, and this makes you think it doesn’t work ever. There’s a difference between what Washington does, and what good teams do in free agency. Like it or not, teams need free agents to be successful, you can’t just build through the draft. I could just as easily point out teams who fail in the draft, and then say that building through the draft simply doesn’t work.
But I’m smarter than that, and you. I realize that it usually requires both the draft and free agency to build a championship team. You go ahead and keep buying into Ted Thompson’s build through the draft philosophy, which has netted exactly zero championships in 10 years of management. I’ll buy into the facts, and all of the teams who have relied on key signings to push their teams over the edge and into the Super Bowl that support my belief.

Free Agaency simply doesn’t work. Ask Washington. It can in rarae occasions be useful if the individual has the right mindset and fits in your workplace and does not bring bad habits. Also a coaching staff is hired by the head coach in Green Bay. Mumbles? Whi is Mumbles and I sure hope you didn’t steal that from Ragnar. I would be embarrased for you if you did so I assume you are refering to someone else. It took 5 years for Holmgren to win it all. McCarthy hasn’t had five years yet.

Didn’t mean to take a jab at Rodgers, was just using what happened in the game to ask my question about what your thoughts on the Pack were. I also think Rodgers has tons of potential, I just think his GM is failing to put talent around him, i.e. the offensive line, coaching staff.
And he would also benefit from having a coach, and even a fanbase, that would hold him accountable for his mistakes. He seems to get a free pass for errors from the fans, like he’s their kid brother or something. And McCarthy is the same way. Rodgers got sacked 50 times, all Mumbles wanted to do was blame the line.
It seems like McCarthy is trying to coach Rodgers the same way he did Favre. But the 2 guys are polar opposites, and should be coached as such. McCarthy had to emphasize to Favre not to take so many chances, not to throw so many stupid passes. And now it appears he’s preaching the same gospel, even though Rodgers doesn’t need it. It’s not his style to take risks, he would actually benefit from taking a few more. It just looks like he refuses to throw into tight spots, but he’s got the accuracy to do it. Just not the mindset.

Oddly enough, the Vikings have been one of the few teams who have had great success in free agency. They’ve added All-Pros & Pro Bowlers, as well as highly productive players to solid contributors over the Childress, Tice & Green eras. They’ve had extremely few outright busts, especially considering the number of free agents they’ve added over all those years. When handing out big bucks though you better know what kind of player you’re getting. Will he stay hungry on the field?

Like I said to Ambrose – Nine Pro Bowlers other than Favre, several more in the conversation, five rookies contributing this year and several young vets maturing into very productive players. Yeah, sounds like a window closing to me.
What makes it more sweet is how the rank and file of Viking nation had gulped down the “THIS IS OUR YEAR!!” kool-aid and were crushed when they lost.

I acknowledged in my post that the main point of your post was the fans making light of Katrina.
My point was why bring up the refs at all when going after fans for being classless? They are two seperate issues. Unless of course you are going after them because they are implying a conspiracy by the league to have the refs slant their calls in sympathy for the area still recovering from Katrina. In which case, the shot directed at you for your own league/refs conspiracy theories concerning the Steelers was legit.
On another note, how do you feel about Thompson and the direction of the Packers after the 11-5 season? Better? Or do you feel things fell right for them and he still has some major issues to address?

Shot their wad? The Vikings had nine Pro Bowl players not named Favre, and another handful of players in the conversation. Five of their rookies contributed this year and some of their younger players started to blossom (boy, that word sounds weird in connection to football). They have issues, but as you feel about the Pack, I have confidence they will be addressed. The one thing Chilly does well (other than being stubborn about his pet project T-Jack) is evaluate the team’s deficiencies and address them. Probably is better suited to be a GM actually.
What finger pointing? The players themselves have gone on record as saying they’re fine with Favre missing OTAs and coming late to camp. Everyone seems to have taken their own responsibilities for the loss, coaches and players alike.
The teeth gnashing you hear from Vikings fans isn’t because the team failed at a one shot deal. They’re frustrated because they watched their team out perform their opponent only to give the game away. Games you should win are the worst kind to lose.

Never said I was satisfied with a one and done. I want them to win a Super Bowl, but you have the make the playoffs to get there right? That usually means winning the division most times right? You don’t think a division championship and a home playoff game is an improvement to feel good about?
As far as your same old dig at Rodgers. I was on here after that game saying he needed to hold on to the damn ball. Why do you have to bring him up anyway? You act like just because I think he has potential to be a great QB for a long time that I think he is perfect and has no flaws. I never once said anything to that effect.

I just have a high level of confidence that Ted Thompson and his staff know what they are doing. He convinced me this year..making very good decisions, and without throwing cash at the wall to see what sticks. He’s building..steady and true. Fair enough. I just think Thompson has left some things unattended on the squad and his philosophy on building almost exclusively thru the draft has yet to prove he can field a team any better than just making the playoffs in today’s football culture. I’m not saying buy up expensive free agents, but he doesn’t seem to be using all of the tools made available to him.
I’ve said for some time now Thompson probably wasn’t big on starting his tenor with a player with so much influence on the squad. He and Favre could have come up with a plan for a trade years before and made the transition for everyone easier and beneficial in the long run.
By the way, as others have noted, GB was picked by many to win the SB, thus a first round exit was not over-achieving.

I’m not playing Madden, Super. I’m looking at facts. I’ve compiled a pretty good list of free agents who contributed to their team’s immediate success, and you combat it with “stop playing Madden.” Brilliant.
The last 3 NFC Super Bowl teams had big name free agents as huge contributors, Brees, Warner, and Plaxico.
And funny how you fail to acknowledge all of the other successful FA’s I mentioned, kind of like how you always try to sidestep your proven stupidity.

I bet the Saints are still kicking themselves for picking up Drew Brees. Here’s a few more failures, all whose teams won Super Bowls after their arrivals.
Deion Sanders, twice 49ers and Cowboys.
Tony Siragusa Ravens
Michael McCrary Ravens
James Farrior Steelers
Plax Burress Giants
There’s 5 Champions in the last 15 years who used big name free agency to get there, and Brees could be number 6. Not to mention Kurt Warner, Rich Gannon, Jon Runyan, and Jake Delhomme who each went to the Super Bowl with their new teams. There’s more, but this should be enough to shut you up.

Why is it that Packer fans are still bitching about Favre “losing” the NFC Championship 2 years ago, yet the same fans are now satisfied with a Wild Card exit where their defense was embarrassed and the QB literally handed the game to the Cards? And you say you will be satisfied again with just a playoff berth.
Also, I really think that Teddy will really tighten up on the spending this year, in fear of overspending then having to deal with a salary cap the following year.

I’m done talking about last year. It’s over. Time to watch the Super bowl and hope Teddy finally takes the lock off the safe.
I think 10-6 could win it even if Favre comes back. New England, the Jets, Philly, Dallas, and the Saints are all tough games. All could be potential losses. Same with the Packers just replace the Saints with the Falcons. Both have to go on the road to NE and Philly. Gonna be a tough go for both teams.

I don’t disagree at all. Unless Favre comes back, then there’s no way 9 wins takes the title. If not, then you very well could see a 3 way race to 9 wins.
The schedules were equally soft, but the difference was how the Vikes and Pack performed against good teams. The Vikes were 6-2 against teams with .500 or better records, the Packers went 3-4, not including the win against Arizona’s 2nd and 3rd strings.
