Why pick on me? I’m not correcting anyone’s grammar. Just defending Joey. It’s a sickness really. Some bizarre thing I can’t explain. People pick on Joey and I defend him because he used to play for my team and I always had a soft spot for him. Maybe there’s some clinic I could try … like Tiger and Steve Phillips … some posh place where they’ll serve pina coladas, give massages, and convince me I don’t have to defend Joey Porter when he says goofy things.

I didn’t say anything about teachers not doing their jobs, nor does this have anything to do with race. While doing research in another country, I lived several years in a ghetto where all the poor people were WHITE and their grammar was just as bad as Joey’s. The fact that you think all disinterested parents happen to be people “that are not white” is a product of your own racism. There are plenty of disinterested white parents in this country, too. Please stop projecting your issues onto me. My only point was that if a kid can’t pass the tests–such as basic grammar (like understanding the use of apostrophes) that kid shouldn’t be promoted to the next level. I wasn’t laying blame for WHY the kid doesn’t pass the tests, merely stating that the kid should pass the tests before passing the grade.
Schools pass athletes, ready or not, because they want them to play ball at the next level. The only point I was making is that schools are more interested in these children as athletes than as students. Since you’re paying taxes to ensure they receive an adequate primary and secondary education, that should annoy you because it means you’re not getting your money’s worth. Period.
Let me try to make this simple:
Pass tests = pass grade.
Don’t pass tests = don’t pass grade.
Don’t pass tests = pass grade = wasted education money.
I’m stating a simple fact. You’re the one trying to drag politics and race into it.

Ruvell100, you are right. “They” don’t value education. So if “They” don’t make it as Athletes or rappers they are up the creek. Why? Their own culture deems education unimportant. “Either you slinging crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot”.

Blaming teachers for students with absentee parents and zero work ethic that come from a culture that embraces illiteracy as their “cultural legacy” for being stupid is casting the blame from where it belongs and thats the people that spend a lot more time with them than a teacher.
They close schools down left and right for poor performance because if they blame anyone but the teaches that would be shining the light of responcibility at the parents (that are not white) and that would be spun into being “racial.” FACT!
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make ‘em “think”.
Thats the lib-er-al M.O. for everything, tax responcible hard working people to death and throw it at the hoods and hope they will stop embracing illiteracy…It’s not going to happen!

He was the player set to lead the Steelers onto the field for Super Bowl XL. Instead, he held the rest of the team back and told Jerome Bettis to run onto the field alone when the time came, then the rest of the team would come out behind him en masse. He wanted Jerome to get all the attention for his last game. If you knew anything about narcissism, you’d know that unselfish act doesn’t quite fit the pattern. Joey’s well known for similar acts of kindness for fellow players.

Okay … you’ve completely thrown me. I honestly don’t know. He’s always spoken like this as far as I remember. He’s interviewed on the America’s Game for the Steelers 2005 Super Bowl, and as far as I recall, he makes some usage errors in that interview. He definitely muffles some of his consonants when he speaks. And Florio’s always taking jabs at his poor grammar. I’m working off the belief that his speech patterns are genuine. When have you heard him speak correctly for any length of time?
Emmitt Smith is a smart, savvy businessman who obviously tries to make a good impression. You can’t think his grammatical errors are deliberate. It’s just not that easy to undo a lifetime of ingrained speech patterns.

I’ll resist the urge to edit the numerous grammatical errors in your comment and try to stay on the point you failed to catch in your race to jump on the “liberal” us-vs.-them polarized-nation express.
When I said people should be angry at the school system, I meant they should be angry at a system that passes athletes who clearly shouldn’t be passed. That has nothing to do with parenting. It has to do with a system that exploits kids who are athletically gifted. The educational system looks the other way and promotes them to the next level because they want them on the playing field–never mind that they can’t put together a coherent sentence. And it works out fine for the Joey Porters who wind up with multi-million-dollar NFL contracts. But it doesn’t work out so well for kids who get injured or wash out before reaching Joey’s level. They’ve been graduated without an education and have no way to earn a living.
YOU are paying these schools to educate kids, and YOU should be angry if YOUR money is being pissed into the wind. What that has to do with liberalism, I can’t imagine.

My problems with Joey stem from being a fan of the team he’s on. Disobeying a coach’s orders, mouthing off when he shouldn’t, and now complaining after getting paid more than he’s worth while screwing up the conjugation of the most basic verb in the language.
Don’t give me the socio-economic diatribe. He KNOWS how to conjugate “to be”. He choses to talk like that and it’s stupid. I don’t think defending him and his poor use of our language sends the proper message to anyone, anywhere.

Bill Cosby was right. It’s Black History Month, and I wonder if Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and hard working black folks would have fought and given their lives if they knew this is how it would turn out.
50 years later, the education and opportunity they fought for is just wasted. What a complete embarrassment that there is an entire sector of people in this country that can’t talk, can’t work, can’t take care of their children, kill each other, commit crimes and blame the man, etc.
Anyone here about that Extreme Makeover family that had an $800,000 house built for them with no mortgage that got foreclosed on within 3 years? I wonder what they look like.
