Scott Green tabbed as Super Bowl ref

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL has chosen Scott Green as the referee for Super Bowl XLIV.  Green became the subject of controversy last month when he refereed the Cardinals-Packers divisional round game.

Replays showed Cardinals cornerback Michael Adams’ hand was on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ facemask on Karlos Dansby’s game-winning fumble return for a touchdown.  V.P. of NFL officiating Mike Pereira said the facemask was incidental.
Green has reportedly drawn high marks consistently, though, and worked the 2002 and 2004 Super Bowls as a back judge.

that’s right…the packers got screwed and the cards are still the worst playoff team of all time….waahhh

  4. lezmaka says: Feb 2, 2010 8:22 PM

So, we’ve got a ref that missed an obvious facemask/roughing the passer officiating a game between two teams with great QBs that both put some “remember me” shots on the QB in the conference championship games?
Manning and Brees might end up looking like Favre.

  5. ShimSham says: Feb 2, 2010 8:25 PM

The worse miss was the no helmet-to-helmet call two plays before the fumble.

  6. GBP says: Feb 2, 2010 8:34 PM

Please Packer fans, don’t complain about this story. We don’t want to sound as pathetic as Viking fans. We’ll be back.

  7. tjacks7 says: Feb 2, 2010 8:39 PM

Incidental facemask? So they get rid of the 5 yard penalty for incidental facemasks and just allow you to do it. Whatever happened to taking the referees [skewed] opinions out of the games?

  8. BUNYAN says: Feb 2, 2010 8:44 PM

Mike Pereira is a pinhead. He should work for the government. There is no incidental when it comes to grabbing the face mask. Especially when it’s the quarterback’s face mask. I am not a Packer fan. However, the NFL is deciding through the use of the ref’s calls or no calls to tip the scales toward the team they want to win. I have seen it happen many times, in many games throughout the last 10 years. To quote Fletcher in the movie ‘The Outlaw Josie Wales’, “Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining”.
P.S. – I guarantee you if the incidental face mask was committed by the Raiders, the call would of been made and the penalty walked off. No touchdown.

At least it won’t be XtraLeavey in there more worried about how he looks making calls than how he is calling the game.
If Rogers doesn’t miss-by a miiiiiiiiiiiiile a wide open WR in OT, Pack win on first offensive play in OT. But Rogers missed, Pack lost, and the rest is boohoos.(Seahawk fan……familiar with booohooos)

  10. leatherneck says: Feb 2, 2010 8:50 PM

Green and his crew did a much, much better job than whoever ref’d the Vikings-Saints game.

  11. FumbleNuts says: Feb 2, 2010 9:24 PM

I hope someone is watching his bank accounts?

  12. BCEDGE says: Feb 2, 2010 9:31 PM

leatherneck, that would be pete morelli who makes mike carey look competent. he is also the guy who blew the polamalu interception in the colts-steelersplayoff game because according to his boss “he didn’t know the rule”. the fact that clown would be reffing a conference championship game shows u how much stock the nfl puts in how they choose their refs.

  13. bluestree says: Feb 2, 2010 10:15 PM

Who’s on the rest of the crew? In the Packers-Cards game, I thought there were non calls on holding penalties that allowed runners to get to the edge and turn the corner (eg. Hightower’s late 4th qtr run). Also the no calls on offensive pass interference (remember Aikman saying “if you’re going to let them do that”, which was Fitz pushing Woodson to the ground, the defender had no chance. If that crew does the SB, Periera might wish he was already gone.

  14. InsidetheNFL says: Feb 2, 2010 10:28 PM

BCEDGE and Leatherneck….Peter Morelli is also the ref who worked the 2007 Browns/Ravens game where Dawson kicked a last play 50+ yd FG that went all the way thru the uprights and bounced off the single pole that holds the uprights and bounced back thru the uprights and Morelli called it “no good”…..I hope Morelli never gets a chance to ref another NFL game much less a playoff game, the guy is worthless.

  15. Sellinmp1981 says: Feb 2, 2010 10:53 PM

Funny that Pereira said the facemask was “incidental”, when earlier in the year he said in an interview that “any contact above the quarterback’s shoulder” is a penalty and should be called.
If they are going to call these ticky-tack penalties, they could at least call them consistently or just get rid of them.

  16. edgy1957 says: Feb 2, 2010 11:27 PM

You know, it’s real easy to referee from your couch and a big screen TV. Most of you would have missed the call as well or made a mistake on a different one.

  17. tigerlilac says: Feb 3, 2010 12:36 AM

    Look before you bet!
Las Vegas factors in refs treatment of Colts. Do you?
In only 2 of the Colts’ last 10 games did the Colts have more accepted penalty yardage than did their opponents. In those 10 games, the Colts’ opponents were 4 times (that’s 400%) more likely to have more penalty yardage than the Colts.
Playoffs – vs. Jets: 1 penalty for 5 yards
Playoffs – vs. Ravens: 4 penalties for 25 yards
Week 17 – vs. Bills: 3 penalties for 15 yards
Week 16 – vs. Jets: 3 penalties for 15 yards
    Week 15 – vs. Jaguars: 5 penalties 40
    Week 14 – vs. Broncos: 4 penalties 20
    Week 13 – vs. Titans: 5 penalties 40
    Week 12 – vs. Texans: 3 penalties 25
    Week 11 – vs. Ravens: 5 penalties 40
    Week 10 – vs. Patriots: 3 penalties 20
Here’s the penalties called against Colt opponents for the same period:
Playoffs – vs. Jets: 6 penalties for 46 yards
Playoffs – vs. Ravens: 7 penalties for 64 yards
Week 17 – vs. Bills: 4 penalties for 40 yards
Week 16 – vs. Jets: 5 penalties for 52 yards
    Week 15 – vs. Jaguars: 4 penalties 22
    Week 14 – vs. Broncos: 7 penalties 65
    Week 13 – vs. Titans: 4 penalties 50
    Week 12 – vs. Texans: 10 penalties 129
    Week 11 – vs. Ravens: 2 penalties 20
    Week 10 – vs. Patriots: 4 penalties 72
The aggregate calls against the Colts have round (zero and five) numbered penalty yardage which has a positive correlation with calls that exclude both pass interference as well as calls against them in their own Red Zone. The small number of average penalty yards per penalty indicate very few major penalties and personal foul calls (e.g., very subjective calls like unsportsmanlike conduct) were called against the Colts.
The aggregate calls against the Colts’ opponents have a lower number of odd (zero and five) penalty yardage which has a positive correlation with calls that include both pass interference and calls against them in their own Red Zone. The higher number of average penalty yards per penalty indicate more major penalties and personal foul calls (e.g., very subjective calls like unsportsmanlike conduct) were called against the Colts opponents.
Florio, how about a thread where fans get to reflect on these statistics?

  18. jersey73 says: Feb 3, 2010 7:18 AM

@ tigerlilac…how many times you gonna truck out the same stats to create a false conclusion that the refs help the Colts.

  19. NoKoolaidCowboy says: Feb 3, 2010 8:30 AM

Scott Green, don’t screw this up.

  20. eric12401 says: Feb 3, 2010 8:36 AM

Maybe because they play sound football and their opponents will do anything and everything to try to stop them, therefore racking up the personal foul and PI calls?

  21. AZ Red Bird says: Feb 3, 2010 10:49 AM

I love seeing you Packer fans crying about that call.
I was at the game…as soon as the ball went out of Rodgers hands the ref had to track the ball…not the carry through of Adams…
we were all watching the ball and to see who would be recovering it…as did the ref.
Rodgers had the greatest Pele’ kick heard in AZ ever. Whining about the follow through makes you guys sound like …well LOSERS! …and I love it!
Cry on….and I’ll enjoy my cup of morning coffee…maybe I’ll add a few of your tears to it for flavor.

Funny, the playoff gane vs. Jets (1 penalty for 5 yards against the Colts) was consistent with the facts from the previous nine weeks. Ever read the phrase, past is prologue, or, we hold these truths to be self evident?
The Catholic Church is more honest about child molestation than the NFL is about the disparity in how games are officiated.

  25. GBP says: Feb 3, 2010 1:16 PM

AZ Red Bird – Good luck with Leinert next year. In fact, good luck for at least the next 5 years, your team will be 8-8 at best. Enjoy, DB.

  26. Hugo Stiglitz says: Feb 3, 2010 1:39 PM

If the NFL were a mode of transportation, and there was one fan of each team in the league on that mode of transportation… a Packer fan getting the ‘bizness’ from a Cardinals fan is like the school bully getting picked on by the retard on the short bus.

  27. Sportnman says: Feb 3, 2010 1:50 PM

Mike Carey is the best referee they’ve got! WHAT ARE THEY DOING!!!!!
