Sharper says Saints aren't dirty, but "a little grimy"

With the Saints sending quarterback Kurt Warner woozy into retirement a week and a day before turning Brett Favre’s leg and foot a deeper shade of purple than his helmet, the Saints are now being faced with the accusation that they play dirty on defense.

Safety Darren Sharper addressed the subject on Wednesday.

“We don’t know if we want to call ourselves dirty,” Sharper said.  “[I]t is like taking a shower when you get up in the morning and are going to cut your grass.  You are nice and fresh when you cut the grass, but at the end you have a little griminess to you.  We want to call ourselves a little grimy; not dirty all the way, but just maybe a little grimy.  That is how we like to play.”

So, presumably, Peyon Manning’s ass will be the grass on Sunday, and Sharper and his teammates will be pushing the lawnmower.

But hey, they are America’s Team now so they are allowed late hits, trapped catches, fumbled attempted first downs and cheap shots. So the rules don’t apply to them. Go Colts!

Rich Eisen loves Favre more than Florio…he’s still talking about the hit to Favre’s ankle but what no one says is that Loadholt pushed him into Lord Favre…..Manning’s going to flop before he gets a “remember me” hit but if they do get a hold of him….legit or not I bet the flag comes out!

Saints are EXTREMELY lucky to be in the Super Bowl.
The Saints offense has carried them all season.
The Saints defense ranked 25th in the league.
So I guess they are “grimy” if by grimy Jamie Sharper means far below average.

For whatever reason, the NFL wants the Saints to win this year, and they will get all of the help they need from the officials.
Just like they did in the conference championship game.

  12. Nate_G says: Feb 3, 2010 3:42 PM

I hope that when the Vikings and Saints play next year that the Vikings are fine with giving the Saints their first TD on nothing but personal fouls… On every play of that drive make sure they absolutely smother Mr. Brees… and make sure the offense delivers a nice chop block or two on Macrae as well.

Anyone that thinks the Saints are dirty are a bunch of whiny asses. Seriously. They’re a physical defense. They don’t dive at knees, and do dirty things to hurt guys.
How many times a year do you hear about “rattling” the opposing QB, what exactly do you all think that means? It means putting him on his ass a few times and making him think about you!
Not so much Favre, but Warner and Peyton are very much about rhythm and timing in their game, so throwing that off is the best way to beat them.

  15. Bill Cowher's Chin says: Feb 3, 2010 3:48 PM

That game is probably thee most obviously gift wrapped win since the infamous “tuck rule” NE win. Get over it Saints fans, its all over the NFL community, all over the internet, all over espn and nfl network, the Vikes got screwed and thats not something even we Saints fans can honestly deny. When you do, it shows how very little you know about the sport.

The Packers lose and within minutes they have a STILL FRAME picture of Rogers on the internet. I did not see a fine or admission from the league. Soo you “LEBOWSKI” can stfu!!!!!!!!!

  32. Rip says: Feb 3, 2010 4:32 PM

Hotpepper – you beat me to it. The defensive stats are virtually identical between the two teams except for one major difference. The Saints get 50% more turnovers than the Colts, and that number is even higher counting the post-season.
They didn’t hit Favre late, the two times they were flagged for it were bogus calls, one of which lead to 7 pts since it happened on a 3rd down play that the Saints stopped. The low hit on Favre wasn’t late, nor was it a penalty until this year, so the Vikes still came out ahead on that deal.
The Colts’ were fined for a late hit on Sanchez, so if the Saints are dirty I suppose the Colts (and every single defense in the NFL) are too.
    Waaaaaaaah!

  33. PRLA says: Feb 3, 2010 4:39 PM

What was that $10,000 fine Favre paid for in pre-season…wait..what’s that? A cheap shot crack back block.
It’s ok for other teams to play dirty, that’s called tough defense, but don’t let it happen to them because then it’s dirty.
If a team doesn’t score more points than your team, it doesn’t matter how many yards a defense gives up….you still lose.

  34. durno99 says: Feb 3, 2010 4:40 PM

I am a disgusted Vikings fan. My only problem is with Childress. If NO was going to take a FEW shots at my QB then I would match that at the very least. Send in Robison for a play and drill Brees and then stare at the NO bench. Kind of like baseball………….Protect your star player! Childress failed to do that. One of his few jobs and can’t even do that. I wish Gardy would have been coaching that game!!!!!!

  35. kola says: Feb 3, 2010 4:41 PM

If the Saints are abiding to the rules of football….. then why are they getting fined after the game is over? Maybe it is just me, but I don’t see a lot of players getting fined after the game when they made acceptable hits.
I agree that this is football and people will get hurt. But intentionally trying to hurt a player to get them out of the game is well dirrrrty – with a capital who DAT. We might as allow punches and chop blocks – lets spice this game up some more since there isn’t enough drama already.

    Captain-
Were you in the stands 3, 4, 6 years ago? When our Saints just about had to move due to lack of interest? Atleast the Vikings sell out their games, even if it takes an occasional threat of a blackout to do so.
I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 24 years and I can say with absolute certainty that you shouldn’t be talking about what or who makes a good fan. Its only been 2 years now that we’ve been filling the stands. Prior to then I was able to sit just about anywhere I wanted to after the 1st half of the game. So spare us all in your obvious recently grown Saints ego.
And to all Saints fans who can’t seem to grasp the fact that sometimes teams are “given” a win, you need to learn how to pay attention to how things work in the NFL for a couple more decades before opening your yaps. Or do us all a big favor and buy a ticket to a game two years from now and leave the paper bags off when you do go.

It’s very apparent that “guys” like Majik (who’s been getting owned routinely on this site on virtually every thread he posts on) and the rest of the Minnesota Loser Brigade have ever played football, let along watched it in the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s when it was still a game played by men. It’s especially funny given that how the Saints played the Vikings in the NFCCG was NOTHING compared to how the famed Purple People Eater defenses played.
    ____________
Who has been “owning” me on this site? You? Supersuckers? Any other D bag Packer fan who fails to use facts and reasoning in their arguments, and still thinks GB was better than Minny even though they lost in the Wild Card round and lost twice to the Vikes? You’re an idiot, and couldn’t intellectually own an infant, let alone an actual rationally thinking adult.
And for your info, I actually played high school and college ball. And everyone I watched the game with, all of who have played ball and possess an IQ over the impressive 37 score you nailed, say that was one of the worst called games ever.

Tell you what, tell Fumbles Peterson to hold on to the ball and then next year maybe you won’t have to be on PFT two weeks later trying to scrape the bottom of the excuse barrel to explain away your pathetic ball handling skills.

Not true at all. Check the posts. Vikings fans were crying SECONDS after the game ended. Also, one of those hits on farve wouldve been impossible to stop. If you weigh ~300lbs and are charging as fast as you can at someone, I would LOVE to see you stop in 1 second after the ball leaves the QB’s hand. Basic physics will show you that’s not possible.

The only thing wrong with all this talk of dirty play is the refs will be looking for anything that looks even a little dirty.
All the talk will cost the aints 30 to 45 yards in flags and first downs
The Saints are not to smart they should let the way the play talk for them
The NFL has one great QB that is Payton and I am sure the NFL is going to punish the aints for anything that even looks bad.
Payton is a much better actor then Brady and he gets calls so how many do you think the Saints are giving up by talking?

What happens when and if Brees gets knocked out for a season or God forbid his career gets cut short in retaliation? Who will we have to thank?

The Saints defense is dirty… They hold jerseys on receivers, check past 5 yards and score dirty hit after dirty late hit on opposing QB’s. They did it in both post season games to both QB’s. It will be interesting to see if they will be allowed this latitude on Peyton Manning. My guess is they will be flagged more than twice as much for hitting Manning as they were for hitting either Warner or Farve. Personally, I want to see the Saints lose, not for their cracker jack offense, but for the dirty defense that that they acknowledge as dirty and announce ahead of time this is their dirtiest game to date. I hope they get beat!!!

  64. JimmySmith says: Feb 3, 2010 9:46 PM

For the rest of the PFT universe, I will give you the skinny on the Viking fans. The team will either draft a player or sign a FA and that will begin 6 months of “we are going to the superbowl”, doesn’t even matter the player or the position, its just in their DNA to claim the paper championship every spring.
Then the season begins and if they win a few games like they did this year, then its official, they are really going to win the superbowl, if not, excuses and complaining.

The Saints are #6 Rushing the ball and #4 Passing, and #1 overall in offense… The Colts beat 2 one dimensional teams whereas we beat 2 HOF QBs…We’re more ready 4 “HelmetHead’ than they are 4 Drew Brees,PT,Bush,or Bell…
