Harvin wins Pepsi rookie of the year award

As expected, Vikings receiver-kick returner Percy Harvin was named the Pepsi rookie of the year on Thursday during a press conference at the Super Bowl XLIV Media Center.

The prize was determined by fan voting.  More than 1.59 million votes were cast, a significant increase from the 1.002 million ballots from a year ago.

Apparently, however, Harvin wasn’t present for the presentation.  (We’re trying to confirm that.)

Two of the other finalists — Bills safety Jairus Byrd and Packers linebacker Clay Matthews — definitely didn’t attend the press conference.

Present for the session were Texans linebacker Brian Cushing and Ravens tackle Michael Oher.

Harvin previously was named the Associated Press offensive rookie of the year.

UPDATE:  Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com tells us that Harvin didn’t attend the press conference.  The announced reason was “travel complications,” which could mean that he simply didn’t want to travel to Miami.

He was seen popping Midol like they were tic-tacs.

He preferred smoking weed through Coke cans. Being at the presser conference could have been awkward.
But seriously, good job Percy, well deserved. Hope you figure out the migraine thing.

A well deserved award for Harvin. Great job this year!!!

In a blind taste test, 9 out of 10 rookies preferred the taste of the Coke Rookie Of The Year Award.

Somebody better break it to Chris Johnson…

  13. Grimmlock42 says: Feb 4, 2010 3:03 PM

Percy Harvin, rookie of the year. Sidney Rice, breakout player of the year. Bret Favre let the world know that these guys are legit. The vikings are a legitimate superbowl contender for years to come. Running back is set. Receivers are set. The frontline is set. Defense is respectable. Vikings have to make a huge stride to land a great QB this off-season. AGAIN. I thought Bret Favre was amazing this year and I would love to see him back one more year. IF NOT. They must go after the best QB available this off-season whether it’s free agency or through the draft.

Matthews was a finalist? Maybe for “Rookie of the 1/2 Year”.

Honest question: why does Reynaud return punts over Harvin? I’ve never understand that

  20. whatajokethissiteis says: Feb 4, 2010 3:42 PM

I only wish the ones making fun of someone’s migranes would have to suffer through one you would shut your big mouths forever!!!!!!!
Also I have seen really bad fans at a lot of football games not just the Vikings as a matter of fact PA and TN are two of the worse, when fans have to be ejected from a game for picking on a little girl because she worn her Vikes jersey at the PA game a couple of years ago that’s bad, and when you have drunks sitting behind you at a TN game kicking the back of your chairs and calling you names and threating to kick your a@#@#@ if you don’t take off your jersey, thats bad, so quit giving the MN fans a bad rap there are bad fans for all the teams not just one.
    Wake up people!!!!!!!!!!

I second that. You don’t hear enough about him and he was very productive. This is coming from a Vikings fan too.

Maybe Matthews can be mollified by winning the Revlon prettiest hair award.

  23. Mac says: Feb 4, 2010 3:53 PM

I am a Packer fan and this doesn’t bother me. He’s a good player and if he can stay on the practice field, I’ll be cursing his name for years to come….If, that is if the queens can find someone to throw him the ball. Brett’s great but I don’t think he’s coming back.

  24. TrentDilferisaDouche says: Feb 4, 2010 3:53 PM

Congratulations Percy! We look forward to an expanded role in the offense for years to come.

    Maybe he is a Coca-Cola drinker….

  28. Ambrose says: Feb 4, 2010 4:15 PM

Harvin seems like a good kid, and he looks very good. It is as appropriate for him to win as anybody, I guess. But the fan voting throws off all convention. Any team that has had an exciting year (like the Vikings) will cause the (usually not rabid) fanbase to go gaga and overwhelm the ballot boxes, because they are so “special”, right? If Favre had played as he had for the previous five seasons, (instead of out-of-his-ass,) the Vikings would have been a pedestrian team. Harvin got the attention that he did from the band-wagon jumping ballot stuffers. But that is how this contest is played…..so…congratulations.

  29. Manbearpig says: Feb 4, 2010 4:16 PM

Florio LOVES to speculate on this kind of stuff, usually picking the possibility that makes the subject of the story look the worst.
It could also mean about 1 billion other things. One possibility is that he was abducted by the elusive Bigfoot on the way to the airport and is currently stashed away in a cave somewhere in Utah, being forced by Bigfoot to watch reruns of PFT Daily.
That COULD have been his travel complication. You never know.

  33. shaggytoodle says: Feb 4, 2010 4:36 PM

Grimlock- Favre does make the players around him better, He made Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman look legit too. While they both have more talent than Brooks or Freeman ever had, lets see what they do when Favre retires.

  34. IAVikefan says: Feb 4, 2010 5:36 PM

Well deserved… now if he could just get that migrane issue figured out, he’d be even more dangerous…

    Michael Oher and Brian Cushing…
Two very impressive rookies. Both appear to be class acts off the field.
Would have thought Sebastien Vollmer deserved some recognition but can’t argue with Byrd and Matthews nominations.

Before Robert Brooks got hurt I’d take him over Rice & Harvin. Check out his 1995 stats – just sick! I would honestly say before he got hurt best Packers receiver I’ve seen since Sterling Sharpe. He tore up the Cowboys in the championship game that year too.

  40. Beer Cheese Soup says: Feb 4, 2010 9:14 PM

Congrats to Harvin, very well deserved. I was one of the biggest critics when he was picked, but I was certainly proven wrong. I hope for his sake he can find a legal way to get the migraines under control. If he can, his potential is nearly limitless.
I’m shocked Matthews was nominated when he didn’t even start the whole season, but congrats to him as well.

It was not even a close decision…And to the idiots that say, it was a favre that made him great……he is an elite player, and made even more elite because of favre, that is why they brought in the gunslinger…..It is sad to see all the haters out ther…cause lets face it…when its a freezing cold sunday…your favorite team is on a bye week, and you want to watch some good old football…Isnt watching the gunslinger always a good time???? It makes no sense to hate on him…He may be self centered but at least he isnt shooting himeslf in the leg. or running people over wasted…….oh well……SKOL Congrats percy…..well done

  44. purple hay-seuss says: Feb 5, 2010 3:05 PM

So, Occam likes whores and phildo is an idiot. If Maclin is so damn good, why wasn’t he in the mix the award? How many player of the week (rookie) honors did Maclin get?
Sure Favre makes everybody better, and gets some of them pay raises to boot. We rubes out here in the ether are the dumb ones. You will never hear anybody around Favre complain that he got them a raise. Look around yourselves at work. Notice any new people that you KNOW are going to threaten to take your job in the future or are likely to get promoted over you? Notice anybody that’s been around forever and always, ALWAYS gets projects done ahead of schedule? Always leads his/her teams to success? The boss loves them, doesn’t he/she? Gives them public accolades and eats lunch with them. I’ll bet you dopes hate that person, too. Why don’t you stand out at work?
Percy Harvin stands out at work every practice, every time, despite his ailments and incessant publicity. Great job, kid.

Yeah we can win the big one, but we have the rookie of the year! woooooopie!!!!

  47. zangy says: Feb 6, 2010 11:58 PM

packer fan here….congrats to percy, he is easily the most talented player on the vikes offense, i’m much more worried about him getting the ball than I am of peterson. He was as deserving of the award.
To those that are bad-mouthing Matthews-the guy only started half of the season and still got 10 sacks, that’s pretty damn good.
