Torry Holt, Tra Thomas to be cut Monday

The Torry Holt experiment in Jacksonville is only going to last one season. Vito “Don’t call me Tweeto” Stellino of the Florida Times Union reports that Holt and tackle Tra Thomas will be released Monday by the Jaguars.

Still only 33, Holt had decent numbers in Jacksonville with 51 catches for 722 yards.  But his speed and ability to win one-one-battles has declined rapidly the last few seasons.  The Jaguars have a promising young group of wideouts with Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas, and Jarrett Dillard.  Holt was due $9 million over the next two seasons.

Holt’s release isn’t shocking, but dropping Thomas is less of a surprise.  The Jaguars have two first-round tackles and Thomas was a part-time player at age 35.

Silva and I used to always argue over Holt and Isaac Bruce’s Hall of Fame credentials.  Holt should get another contract, but the end to his career is not helping his case.

If the Bears are smart they’ll pick up Holt to help mentor their receivers in Martz’s offense.

He’ll end up in Chicago – he won’t make them better, but he’ll be there. Now all Martz has to do is get Isaac Bruce and lure Marshall Faulk out of retirement. Oh yeah, and get new legs for Orlando Pace and the band will back together – they’re on a mission from God.

well since Julius Peppers choked the panthers out of every penny they had, Holt would have been a panther last year.. Panthers will pounce on him now and draft another in the second round, and there ya go… a solid wr core to go with 89.

Martz will want Holt. Holt will want Martz. A veteran who knows the Martz system will do wonders for the young Chicago WRs.

The genious Martz should also bring in Marc Bulger. Then he could bench Cutler in favor of Bulger – like he did with Kurt Warner. Great move. Martz ruined the Rams and he’ll do the same with the Bears.

Uhh, GBP, if you need to talk to god, please go through Bruce or Kurt Warner. The others need not apply.

Martz, doesn’t have to do anything, Da Bears are in shambles already.

panthers need to sign Tory Holt as a free agent so he can take pressure off Steve Smith while Tra Thomas should look around and i say the redskins would be an option for him to go for one year, but i say he will look around the league, Holt’s best chance to win will be in Carolina where he will be the number 2 or 3 guy.

Bring Tra back to Philly, they could have used some veteran help (Along with consistency) this season up front.

Well said, he also could be used as a decoy and his leadership skills would almost be like having an extra coach on that team.

Jags only have one first round tackle, Eugene Monroe. Eben Britton was a 2nd round pick.

I get a huge laugh off people who say Martz ruined, undercut, destroyed Warner. There would be no Warner without Martz. Read Peter King’s column. Read Waner’s own comments. Warner went through a long period when he couldn’t hold onto the ball or win a game. Martz was correct to bench him. That’s just the way it was. And as for Bulger, he was a reject, cut by the then lowly Saints and out of the NLF. Martz put him in the Pro-Bowl, where he won the MVP.
It’s easy to knock Martz, but he is one of the winningest head coaches of all time (19th, i think) while working for one of the worst managed teams of all time. The Rams never gave him a QB prospect that anyone else thought was worth crap.

FumbleNuts – why would the Bears sign a guy to be a decoy when they need play makers and are certainly void of them. Well, I must remember this is the Bears we’re talking about.

I would very much like to see Tra Thomas back in Philly! He may not dazzle but the guy is durable and we all know that Ex-Eagles go on to suck, then flourish when they return to Philly!

With Aroma, Bennett, Knox, Hester, and Iglesias the Bears don’t really have room for an aging WR like Holt. They need help in a lot of other areas like DE, FS, and RT. Not going to happen people.

Julius Peppers didn’t choke the Panthers out of anything:
They franchised him, thus choking themselves
    out of everything.

Drat, you exemplify the biggest problem with Martz – ego. Martz treated Warner like a disposable easily replaceable asset and never gave him the protection he needed. Why? Because Martz believed it was all about him and his MaxQ system – not the talent of Warner. Warner has proven that it was not the “genious” of Martz that made him the leader and player he is. You can blame everyone else, but Martz steered the ship directly into the rocks, made horrible draft decisions and left the organization in ruin. Are you really using a Bulger Pro Bowl award as an example of the quality of Martz? That’s paper thin – much like Bulger’s nerves after getting absolutely pounded in Martz’s system.
