Brees, Faulk team up to help the 9th Ward

On Super Bowl Sunday, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and New Orleans native Marshall Faulk are coming together to help make the 9th Ward Field of Dreams a reality.

The goal will be to build a state-of-the-art football stadium and track in New Orleans’ poverty-stricken 9th Ward, which continues to struggle more than four years after Katrina.

A total of $1.1 million already has been raised, with another $800,000 needed.

To help the project, text “Dream” to 50555 between now and the end of Sunday night’s game.  A $10 charge will be applied to your cellular invoice; the money will go to the Brees Dream Foundation, and it then will be donated to the construction of the facility.

Said Faulk in a press release issued by the Brees Dream Foundation, the 9th Ward Field of Dreams, and the Marshall Faulk Foundation:  “I grew up in the 9th Ward, so I understand the real effects this stadium can have.”

So pull together on this one, Saints fans.  Only 80,000 of you need to send the text to make it happen.

Surely, a few more than 80,000 folks are pulling for the Saints today.

If the Saints win the Super Bowl I’ll do it

As long as the team who has the better day wins, then I don’t care about today. If it’s another Super Bowl XL, then I’ll be convinced this game is a joke. And I don’t want to think that!

Sorry, but my disposable income has been earmarked solely for Haitian earthquake relief for the foreseeable future, so I cannot help at this time. But thanks for asking, and I wish you nothing but the best of luck in your endeavor.
(And how exactly is a 2 million dollar football stadium and track supposed to help 9th Warders out of poverty? The 2 mil would be much better spent luring some employers in there with some jobs.)

I think its nice that they are doing this but I think their timing is completely wrong. They shouldnt be using peoples feelings about the Haiti’s earthquake as a way to get money for New Orleans. They also shouldnt be taken money for a football field when that money could be going to feeding and housing people who are in real need right now.
Yes the 9th ward still needs help but they atleast have food water and a place to sleep tonight.
Saints fans do the right thing and send it to Haitis and not the 9th ward. Donating to Haiti’s instead wont make the Saints lose tonight. Football season for these kids isnt to next September so they dont need the money for a new field right now anyway. While the Hatians needed the money yesterday.
If you have enough money to do both then thats great. If you only have enough money to do 1 right now send it to Haitis. Then in a month or 2 when you have more then send it to N.O.. That way they will both get what they need when they need it.

Why pour $$ into something that is below sea level & is guaranteed to flood again?
Raise $$ to move the people to higher ground…now that makes sense.

Don’t be an knucklehead & say you’ll only donate if the Saints win! Donate because it’s important and can help people!

It is very admirable that they want to donate all that money but doesn’t it make sense to spend that $2 million on rebuilding the hurricane stricken areas or enhancing the economy. I think having a $2 million football stadium in the 9th ward is red herring.

Hard to believe the stupidity of the comments to this post. Morons putting down and degrading a place they have never seen.
They just got my $10…and a check for more will follow today. I’ve been to the 9th Ward..before and after Katrina..they really do deserve our help.
We owe it to this place we live..and have so much more freedom than the rest of the world..to make our home a better place. Not everyone that is born into a poverty stricken, crappy place like the 9th ward becomes a criminal. With the guidance, and support that the rest of us lucky individuals can provide, there is always a chance for at least someone to rise up and become something really better..
(NO I AM NOT A LIBERAL WHINER!)
Hope and help start close to home..let’s finally take care of our own first…the best way to live is to remember and practice the idea of “Pay it Forward”…it is really worth it!
