Kansas City Chiefs guard Brian Waters was announced as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award in a ceremony before Sunday’s Super Bowl.
He beat out finalists Mike Furrey of the Browns and London Fletcher of the Redskins.
Fletcher may not have won, but he did have the honor of hitting the complimentary breakfast at my hotel at the exact same time as me (five minutes before it closed) for seven straight days, which is an NFL record.
As MDS pointed out in our ongoing livechat, Commissioner Roger Goodell has done a great job raising the profile of the award since taking over.
Brian Waters’ 54 foundation in Kansas City has awarded 82 college scholarships to low-income
students since starting in 2004. Thousan of children have also benefited from his back-to-school program that
provides backpacks full of school supplies, as well as haircuts, uniforms,
shoes, immunizations and dental care.
Kudos to Waters on a well deserved honor. Now let’s watch some football. Finally.
