Mr. Goodell,
If your concern is reducing the number of head injuries in order to mollify Congress, then take a page from the Congressional playbook. Assemble a commission of QUALIFIED individuals to gather quantitative data on how most concussions occur. Only after you've analyzed that data can you begin to draw REASONABLE conclusions about how best to reduce the number of concussions. It's foolish to talk about eliminating the three-point stance when you have no evidence to suggest making such a move will help you achieve your goal.
Quality Control 101, Commissioner. Study the problem before trying to solve it.

# Larry David says: February 7, 2010 5:03 PM
If players don't want to get concussions, then don't play football. They know the risks when they sign up for millions to play.
-----------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Why is congress all over this? Do they get involved like this in boxing and MMA? These guys understand the risks and play anyway just like people who smoke know the risks before lighting up.
The government needs to quit telling people how to live their lives. Freedom means you get to choose..whether it's a good decision or a bad one.

bgrayber, your statement only proves that it's jealousy that drives this crap. Chad Hennings is a got his degree from the Air Force Academy and he flew 45 missions in northern Iraq (You might get off your lazy ass and look up his career and his awards). Whatever may you feel about how stupid players are and how useless their degrees may be, this is not the case with him or many other players. It isn't that Chad couldn't manage his money, it's that he had to spend that money because of the spinal injury that ended his career in 2000. His insurance premiums would make your income look like chicken feed and his bills are more than you will probably see in your lifetime. This is the case for many players and for the older players who didn't have a union or who were there at the dawn of the union, their plight is even worse. I think that those of you who spend all your time being jealous of the players should actually look into the real cost of their playing and how it hasn't been worth it for a lot of them.

This is stupid. Football is turning into such a pathetic sport. All Goodell is good for is deciding players' suspensions. Even then he tends to overdo it. Someone else has to deal with the rules because Goodell is slowly turning this into a flag football league. What a joke. The players know what they're getting into. If they don't want to risk injury, they should play basketball. The NFL players aren't complaining or concerned about this, so why should the league be. Sometimes I really wonder how this has happened to the NFL in the past 4 seasons

OK I agree it's a violent sport. So if the "test/research" shows that drugs/contact of any sort kills brain cells why not ONLY allow athletes that have never taken any type of substance or contact into the NFL?
Why?
Because the "it's bad for you" part of the US has taken over. Hell according the the studies EVEY thing kills brain cells, even too much vitamin C will kill you. If you want to keep them all safe sit in your parents basement for all their life and let do nothing but sleep. Wait I'm sure there is a study that says that kills or damages brain cells.
Dal with it. Or choose another occupation.

Goodell is a MORON.
Oh and guys, these players aren't compensated enough to take care of all their bills post career and since none of you have never had to put out that kind of money to pay for those kinds of ailments, you wouldn't know. As I pointed out before, Chad Hennings, hardly an overpaid player without a degree, as some of you have characterized the players, went through $225,000 + $87,000+ $38,000 AND what he had left over from his last year before a spinal injury forced him out of the game. He went into the workmen's comp system to get money to help pay for his bills. He won a judgment, lost it on appeal (by the insurance company) and then won it on a reversal. He's one of the lucky ones because other states won't allow ex-professional players to get workmen's comp. Since most players pay more in taxes than most of you can imagine, their salaries aren't as much as you think they are and because 56% of the players aren't millionaires before taxes, what they have left after taxes is less than you think.

That could possibly be the worst rule change in NFL history.
You think changing the way defenders were allowed to cover wrs made the game more offensively friendly and pass happy this would turn the NFL into a 70 pass per game league.
The pass rush and running game would be non existent. If there is no pass rush offenses will want to drop back and throw the ball. On the other hand the offense wouldnt be able to rush the ball anymore so they would have to pass.
A 2 point stance wouldnt effect pass blocking because they would already be in the prime pass blocking position well before the defense can get off the ball and get a rush. It would negate rushers who depend on getting of the ball faster or knocking the o-line off balance. Which is pretty much everybody.
On offense when they run the ball the line wont be able to get that push. So all the defensive front would have to do is plug up the holes and let the linebackers come and blow up the running backs. The burst the oline gets off the ball is what leads to a good running game and that would be over with.
The NFL will turn into arena football league. The game would get stale .Like in the AFL the first 3 quarters wouldnt matter b/c how fast scoring happens. It also would cost alot of people a job in the NFL. Like in the AFL there is no need for running backs because they dont run the ball. Also defensive ends or any defensive line that are pass rushers would be out of a job. Defensive lines would consist of fat guys like Vince Wilfork only used to stuff up holes up front. Also run stuffing lbs would be gone.
The league will be throwing QBs, pass blocking O-line, gap stuffing D-line, cover LBs and DBs, Wrs and TE's, route running RBs, Kickers and Punters. They would get rid of everyone else who cant fit in those little specialty groups.
Its the NFL apocalypse and I hope someone slaps some sense in Godell. If not they should cancel his contract and hire someone who actually knows something about football to be the commissioner.

Doesn't this seem kind of half-assed? Why don't they just line up across from each other and play it Dungeons and Dragons style or like one of those awesome vampire role-playing games that all the normal people play? I bet the number of concussions would drop significantly. Actually, I doubt anyone would ever suffer any injury of any sort. Think of all the money they would then save on security at the games since nobody would bother to show up. This is the best idea I've heard in a long time. Probably ever.

Totally asinine - let's just stand around and push each other...pretty soon we're just going to get the equivelant of the Pro Bowl every week.
It's a violent sport and the players are compensated quite generously because of it - stop making them into a bunch of pussies!

after Goddell made that comment, in the next segment it was either Phil Simms or Shannon Sharpe, who when asked about banning the three point stance, said flat out, that it wasn't going to happen,... if you want to do that, then you might as well become arena football, ...they're not far from making this glorified flag football, yet in the next breath we want to crown these players as the GOAT, ...i can't forget that playoff game between GB & Arizona, 51-45, and while people may love that type of game, it speaks volumes about how diluted the quality of NFL football has become

Of course this would decimate teams like the Broncos and Ravens of the 2000's. You know, where players get FASTER as they age and after knee and other injuries.
Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Priest Holmes, Ed Reed, Shannon Sharpe, Ed Mccaffrey, Bill Romanowski, Brandon Stokley, and God knows who else.
************
First off I GUARANTEE you're a browns "fan"
Secondly. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed BOTH won defensive player of the year before he ever had a significant injury. Jamal ran the ravens to the superbowl as a rookie before he broke his leg. Priest had a 1000 yard season in 98 and got hurt in 99 and had two 500 yard seasons. Shannon only missed significant time one year of his whole career. Stokley barely made much impact on the ravens other than in the super bowl.
and THIRD you can't be a marquis player in the NFL just from taking juice constantly. steroids have a huge effect on your durability and most of those guys you mention were very durable throughout their careers. Look at baseball. They juice, their stats blow up, and then they go back to normal. You can't dominate over 10 years because you took steroids.

Sounds like a way to lower the costs for teams overall.
Thin k about it. If everyone has to start in a 2 point stance then run blocking becomes almost impossible.
There by reducing the number of RB's you need and you won't have to pay them 6 million dollars a year.
Of course the OL will end up getting much more money so it would be a wash.
Nope on 4th thought this is one of the dumbner ideas ever. This could be almost as dumb as man made global warming.
How about instutiting in the Labor talks that every team has to donate 1 million dollars a year for 10 years to study research and design quality helmets. That equals 320 million dollars. Then follow that up with mandating year player in the NFL being forced to wear every pad High Schoolers have to wear i9e knee pads hip pads tail bone pads and shoulder pads that will actually allow them to tackle someone without getting hurt.
As it stands right now the NFL only requires players to wear a helmet and shoulder pads and most "skill" players dont wear knee or hip pads, and the OL wears as small of shoulder pads to be able to give themselves the best shot at blocking the speeed rushers.
The last 2 paragraphs make a hell of a lot more sense than putting everyone in a 2 stance to start the game.
