New Orleans paper expects best-selling edition in 173 years

The Times-Picayune has been publishing in New Orleans since 1837. It has never had a day like today.

The paper says that it expects today’s edition, marking the Saints’ Super Bowl win, to be the best-selling single edition in the paper’s history.

We have had unprecedented demand for today’s Times-Picayune celebrating the Saints’ Super Bowl victory with its historic 5-inch-tall “AMEN!” headline,” the paper says on its web site. “We expect this to be the best-selling Times-Picayune in our 173-year history.”

The only question is whether the paper’s printing presses can keep up with readers’ appetites.

“We have been printing through the night and are continuing to print copies now to meet your demand,” the paper says.

The newspaper industry is struggling across the country, and the Times-Picayune is no exception. But the Saints’ 2009-2010 season has been a huge boost for New Orleans, and that includes the local newspaper.
