ESPN.com declared Saints the winners before Super Bowl ended

We posted on Saturday night an item regarding an item on ESPN.com regarding the fact that Drew Brees of the Saints had won his first Super Bowl.

Even though the game had yet to start.

The article quickly was yanked.  But it’s now back given that, you know, the Saints ultimately won the Super Bowl.

As a reader points out, however, ESPN.com again jumped the gun.  Based on the 9:20 p.m. ET time stamp, the article was republished roughly 30 minutes before the Saints actually won the Super Bowl.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this relatively innocent error is that some people actually think that it means the Super Bowl was fixed — and that ESPN.com was in on it.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, a man in a black suit is sliding down a rope from the black helicopter hovering over my front yard.

that’s a bunch of malarkey. ……. the look on Peyton’s face at the end of the game was proof enough it was not fixed. I don’t ANY game is fixed. I just think some players have good and bad games.
that’s why they play the game…….

Hey Florio, what ever happened to that article you put up in which you bashed the 2 point conversion? If I recall…you were getting thrashed by readers who were calling you out on that insanely dumb article. In fact it was so bad that they article simply…disappeared? Where’d it go? Why’d you pull it? Couldnt handle it!?

I don’t think this game was fixed…but I do believe SuperBowl XL was.
That being said…just like SuperBowl XL…the NFL had a vested interest in who won.
    Why?
Think of how much more merchandise would be bought if the Saints won vs. if the Colts won. Just like how much more merchandise would be bought if the Steelers won over the Seahawks.
That said, I don’t think this game was fixed.

I’m sure they had a article pre-prepared for the Colts as well. Its called efficient journalism. Something Mike Florio knows absolutely nothing about.

Never once I thought this game was fixed, y would u ever bring that up. Neither one of my teams was in the Superbowl but what I watched was a high passing game and all. Everyone was saying all week that this would be a tough game and would need one defensive play to win it. Guess what it happened and Saints won. I might entertain your idea of the game being fixed if the game was on ABC considering ABC and ESPN are owned by the same. And please let it be true that someone is abducting you in a black suit. We won’t have to read these stories anymore.

I’m sure ESPN had stories ready to go for either team if they won it, but ESPN so well organized that somebody accidentally published one before the game.
I used to love watching ESPN, now it’s a freakin joke of a station. Give NFLN any day of the week.

Some people think “The X-Files” is a documentary.
Some people think humans have never walked on the moon.
Some people think they’ve been kidnapped by aliens and subjected to wild experiments.
Some people think the NFL fixes all Super Bowls featuring teams wearing black and gold.
Some people have little reasoning power but a lot of imagination, paranoia, gullibility, and spare time.
If you were going to rig a Super Bowl, would you tell the folks who hired Steve Phillips and Sean Salisbury, then ask them to keep it secret?

Out of Vegas, it was told that all the professional gamblers were taking the Saints, while most of the tourists were taking the Colts. I believe it was Colin Cowherd show where I heard that. An ESPN show! I did watch for possible inproprieties, but nothing stood out to the naked eye. However, professional fixers wouldn’t make it so easy to see now would they?

    Are you Mike Holmgren?

  24. bluestree says: Feb 9, 2010 1:34 PM

Something suspicious about professional gamblers picking the Saints? Could it be they were betting on the BETTER TEAM! Would you expect people who gamble for a living to pick the wrong team? Why? Unlike fans, they pay more attention to the game and less to the talking heads whose job it is not to pick the games but entertain the sports fans.

    Lets see…
EVERY ANALYST on ESPN said the Colts were going to win. Almost 70%+ bet on the Colts to win…For two weeks straight, every single Sports web site said The Colts were going to win by 10 points+, including Dog Killer’s Mentor…
The NFL is so Fixed, it is un-believable…Do you think its coincidence that every time there is a big game such as MNF or SNF or a big Playoff game, the Favorite and the team that the Public is backing never covers???
Congrats to the Saints, but they didnt earn it…The NFL gave it to them…
The NFL is basically WWF, just with Helmets and Pads. Everything is scripted and the Coaches, the owners and the Refs know about it, and they dont care cause they make Millions of Dollars, and to be honest, if I were in that Club, I wouldnt either…

  29. Paul says: Feb 9, 2010 1:44 PM

    GoBrowns19,
Prior to the game, there were a couple of very detailed analyses done by Las Vegas betting services that basically said the game was a toss-up, debunking the national media’s love affair with Peyton Manning and the Colts. That’s why professional gamblers took the Saints and the points. They said that too much emphasis was being placed on the Vikings game and that the Saints overall body of work was as good, if not better, than the Colts. These reports said that the Saints D was better than their 25th ranking when they played full strength, which is what they had in the SB, and that stats showed that their red-zone defense was among the best in the league. They placed more emphasis on the Saints 13-0 start as a better measure of this team than in their 0-3 finish.

  30. BruceLeroy says: Feb 9, 2010 1:49 PM

And if you dont believe me, take a look at the MNF, most bet on game every week, look at the schedule and what team ALL THE MONEY WAS BET ON
Here are the more memorial games this year
Buffalo at New England — BUFF COVERS
    Huge win for Vegas
New York Jets at Miami — 0-3 MIA Covers
    Everyone had the Jets
San Diego at Oakland —- OAK COVERS – lol
    Huge win for Vegas
Denver at San Diego — DEN wins out right
All the $$$ was on SD
Atlanta at New Orleans — LOLOL – ATL Covers
Remember the end of this one???????
New England at New Orleans — NO

    EVERYONE TOOK AZ
    Minnesota at Chicago — CHI
Look at these games, there were others but these were the most Lopsided bet on games this year were ALL THE ACTION WAS ON THE FAVORITE
If you think Vegas doesnt have a hand in this, didnt have a hand in the PIT/SD game, or the NO/ATL game this year, then your an Idiot.

It CAN’T be because they have the best team they’ve ever had in their 40+ years of existence?
It HAS NOTHING to do with the fact that Drew Brees has been a consistant QB rather than some 1 season wonder.
Has NOTHING to do with the fact that the entire team was ranked #1 (or #2) in offense in the NFL.
Or couldn’t be that they are also one of the top teams to allow the fewest PPG.
Of COURSE NOT! Nooooo…. The game was rigged…….

Some of you are so dumb, I can’t believe you know how to work a computer.
Try some logic….. there have been thousands of NFL players, hunderds of coaches, GMS, owners, refs…. all that would have to know games were fixed. Do you really think not one of them would ever say….hey, this stuff is rigged! One old player on his death bed….nobody ever told their wife or kids and they blabbed it to the Enquirer… no player that was pissed because they got cut….not one old player that has busted up knees and no income?
Nothing can be fixed on this level, becuase it requires too many people to know. The only fixes are one player, or one referee that can maybe affect the outcome. That isn’t what you idiots are talking about. You are talking about a whole enterprise being corrupt, and not one person ever saying a word.
But I forget, we never landed on the moon either. There were hundreds of people at NASA and all these astronauts, and they all were in on it, but never talked. It is a big story, but only 6% of the population believes it was fake. I bet 6% of the population eats their own poop too, but it doesn’t make it mainstream or make sense.
I can show you how every single one of these theories are retarded, but there is no point…..

This is my most favorite conspiracy yet. But would it not make sense that the NFL ensured that the Giants, Jets, Redskins, or Steelers would have won, considering those were the areas that actually had the terror acts occur. I understand the whole “Patriot” thing, but if it were truly fixed one would think that they would have gotten the 2 NY teams to a SB victory much sooner (still waitin on the Jets) and they probably would have liked to have the Saints win a little closer to the end of Katrina for maximum effect.

If any game was fixed, it was the Vikings Saints game two weeks prior. I mean, how can a team outgain the other by over 200 yards, time of possession was 2 to 1, and had 15 more first downs and not win? 3 fumbles, and 2 INT’s, one in field goal range at the end of the game, oh, sorry, never mind.
