League not happy with Kia ad

I forgot to set the DVR to record the Super Bowl, so I’ve yet to see many of the ads.  But I feel compelled, as a member of American society, to find them, to watch them, and to develop an opinion about each of them.

Which proves that the 30-second spots at $3 million each are worth every freaking penny.

One commercial has left the NFL a bit upset, according to Portfolio, via SportsBusiness Daily.  (Apparently, the actual name of the publication is “PORTFOLIO,” but since using all caps is the typing equivalent of screaming into someone’s eyeballs, we’ll stick with “Portfolio.”)

Per the report, the Kia commercial contained impermissible images of Las Vegas casinos, apparently since it would be entirely inappropriate for the coverage of the game to acknowledge in any way the very thing that is responsible for roughly a third of the sport’s television ratings.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told Portfolio that the league did not see the ad before it aired, that CBS sold the spot, and that “[t]he shots of the casinos did violate our policy.”

But the folks in Las Vegas are pleased with the outcome.  “We ended up getting international exposure without having to make an investment,” a Las Vegas Convention & Visitors representative told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, again via SBD.

Though the location malfunction won’t trigger nearly the same consequences as the last high-profile gaffe arising from a CBS-produced Super Bowl, the NFL likely will push this thing until the person responsible for the error quietly leaves CBS and/or the league office to pursue other interests and/or six-figure employment.

They’re all available at NFL.COM, Mr. Florio.

  2. sven_ftw says: Feb 9, 2010 8:36 PM

that was one of the few commercials that were actually good this year…

  3. sven_ftw says: Feb 9, 2010 8:37 PM

if the no fun league wants something to bitch about, they can investigate why cris carter keeps getting hosed…

  4. Blahman64 says: Feb 9, 2010 8:38 PM

And this is exactly what you can expect from the No Fun League.

  5. raidersteve413 says: Feb 9, 2010 8:40 PM

nfl is only fun to watch if you bet on it.
Watching a seahawks vs lions game is like a superbowl when you got a grand on it! I highly recommend it to everyone out there. You wana have a fun football sunday then gamble

  6. gbpack says: Feb 9, 2010 8:47 PM

Watched the commercial again. There are no shots of the interior of casinos or gaming activity. This would be if the moralists cried foul about the suggesitve nature of recreating in a hot tub with bikini clad blonde.
Raising a stink like this raises more alarm bells than not saying anything at all.

  7. doe22us says: Feb 9, 2010 8:48 PM

Wow this League is becoming incredulous and ridiculous really. Vegas baby

I think the NFL now has more discretionary power over individuals, business, and media than Adolf Hitler ever dreamed of.

…glad that news item got cleared up! I can get some sleep now!

  12. elways_jock says: Feb 9, 2010 8:57 PM

i dont recall this particular ad but im sure it was equally as hideous as the others airing during the superbowl .. im sure it had all the right positioning of the attentive black man driving in a very courteous manner and the poor white male parking attendent looking bewildered as the beautiful white woman chastised him for being rude .. etc .. etc.. etc ..

  13. Buck Stallion says: Feb 9, 2010 8:58 PM

Why do any of us care?

  14. .VoxVeritas says: Feb 9, 2010 9:00 PM

So the NFL approved the ad without even seeing it. Great.

  15. Little Tommy says: Feb 9, 2010 9:01 PM

Are you Fing kidding me? They’re upset with that commercial? F them.

  18. VegasChris says: Feb 9, 2010 9:10 PM

The only reason the NFL hates Vegas is because gambling income is the only source of football revenue that they can’t get a piece of.
If they took a cut of the ‘dirty’ gambling money, then they would not be able to say how bad it was.

  19. Roger Goodell's a tool. says: Feb 9, 2010 9:12 PM

  20. jd713 says: Feb 9, 2010 9:20 PM

really? the NFL exists because of the billions of dollars they get from these networks and they are so popular because of both las vegas (gambling) and the growth of fantasy football And now they want to bite the hand ….
Personally i’d like the league to spend a little more time worrying about the labor negotiations and less about an ad that helped CBS recoup some of the billions they are paying to broadcast the game.

To paraphrase the immortal Sgt. Hulka: ‘Lighten up Roger.’

  23. TampaJoey says: Feb 9, 2010 9:43 PM

Goodell and the NFL need to pull their head out of the respective asses. People that wager on sports represents a huge number of NFL fans. Pro football isn’t a church softball league. Maybe if Vegas was in Europe or Mexico Goodell would be a more tolerant, since his top priority lately seems to be moving as many games out of the United States as possible.

  24. Wrathchild says: Feb 9, 2010 9:46 PM

The NFL is solely to blame. Instead of playing Monday morning quarterback (pun intended) on the SB commercials and bitching after the fact, they need to sit their fat asses down and watch every commercial beforehand.

  25. Snowman2008 says: Feb 9, 2010 9:47 PM

Let’s look at logic Goodell style…
It’s bad for the NFL’s image to show Vegas Casinos in a TV ad.
It’s not bad for the NFL’s image to allow referees with anatomical abnormalities (heads up keesters) to make bogus calls that effect the outcome of playoff games.
    It’s Roger in Wonderland people!

  26. hotchick says: Feb 9, 2010 9:50 PM

Anyone make the connection of a Vegas reference during the Super Bowl when watching the ad or simply made the connection AFTER the NFL pointed it out?

  27. shaslers says: Feb 9, 2010 9:51 PM

Are you effing kidding me? The NFL plays dumb while billions of dollars of illegal bets are placed on their sport…but the instant legal gambling starts sniffing around their private club, they call foul? Holy hypocrites.

  28. JimmySmith says: Feb 9, 2010 9:58 PM

Doesn’t the NFL have a church to sue for televising a game? This borders on the insane.

  29. thewolfe says: Feb 9, 2010 10:10 PM

I worked on the sound design and mix for the Megan Fox ad (Motorola) and I have to say that all the ads this year were so so.
I take a personal/professional interest in advertising and it would be a huge shame to have the NFL added to the list of corporate entities we have to compete with.

  30. Clevelander says: Feb 9, 2010 10:16 PM

Florio forgot to record the Super Bowl.
    What a retard.

  31. Bigbluefan says: Feb 9, 2010 10:20 PM

I did not see a Casino I saw hotels not Casino floors
If the NFL can bitch about this and let assholes like convick and stallkiller play are you fing kidding me?
The ahole players are beating there women getting in gun fights and killing people and the NFL is worried about a car add that shows the Vegas strip
Not like they showed shockey passed out in Vegas or Pacman and the gun fight just the hotels on the strip
Clean up your own house Rod before your go after Vegas if the towns so bad keep your players out of it make it safer for everyone else

  32. Bucforever says: Feb 9, 2010 10:21 PM

Ok , the best ad was the one with Bret Favre in 2020. He is still waffleing on retirement ,but I can’t tell what team he is on.

  33. Deb says: Feb 9, 2010 11:10 PM

Remembered the cool partying toys but not the car–probably not a good sign for Kia. All Goodell did was draw attention to the fact that people gamble on football … like no one knew? The league actively supports Fantasy Football, and most people have money riding on the outcome of their Fantasy leagues. Hypocritical much?
My favorites were the Letterman ad and the E-Trade “Milkaholic” ad. HATED the whipped men ads. What is up with that?

  34. tatum32 says: Feb 9, 2010 11:37 PM

yeah, I wouldnt be happy either since we all know Betting on NFL games has NOTHING to do with Las Vegas (eyes roll)

  35. Hank_SJ says: Feb 9, 2010 11:53 PM

“All Goodell did was draw attention to the fact that people gamble on football … like no one knew? ”
Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
    Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: Oh, thank you very much.
Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

Well I’m not happy with the Doritos ad. Eating Doritos in a coffin, WTF?! Did I really see that? The only product I will stop using because of its Super Bowl ad, dumb s#!ts who put that one together.
@ Clevelander, who are you Rahm Emanuel? You need to find your closest local retard agency and go apologize!

  37. prophet of the light says: Feb 10, 2010 1:59 AM

They let the Go-Daddy trash commercials (with a fugly danica patrick…) on but they complain about a commercial which you couldn’t hardly tell what was going on except some toys were partying?
    Good job NFL. Good job.

  38. OLDCRACKER says: Feb 10, 2010 3:00 AM

Maybe Goodell should change his name to Godall, or God-to-all.

  39. aj says: Feb 10, 2010 3:12 AM

No more Kia ads. Time to get back to something more conservative like Pintos or Gremlins.

  40. last starfighter says: Feb 10, 2010 6:14 AM

Best ad of the SB. Muno is a mean bowler

  41. Bob S. says: Feb 10, 2010 6:53 AM

why would nfl owners want to hide the fact vegas exists when they themselves use vegas?
and their ties to other lotteries to milk people?
seems like they want to bury their head in the sand about gambling on football WHICH is why they refuse to ever catch and disclose any player, referee, coach or owner gambling because they think it will hurt the NFLs image and lies that no gambling is taking place by a single person in the last 20 or so years who had any association with them.

  42. Newguy says: Feb 10, 2010 7:38 AM

So their issue is with exterior shots in Las Vegas, not with the orange penis walking around. Ok I guess.

  43. sbhntr says: Feb 10, 2010 7:38 AM

    You sound like George Costanza…………..
    “We’re living in a society……………..”

  44. HarrisonHits says: Feb 10, 2010 9:06 AM

So they let Vick back in the league without saying a word about the fact that he organized and ran a gambling organization, but they cry about seeing the facade of a casino in a tv commercial.
You need to get your priorities in order Mr Goodell. Right now they’re a joke.

  45. starmburst1 says: Feb 10, 2010 9:07 AM

WHO CARES!!!! They did not show any gambling, they were having a kick a$$ weekend partying like the NFL’s players do!

  46. KingJoe! says: Feb 10, 2010 9:54 AM

Well this probably a condition OBama has put on the NFL in order to keep them working under anti-trust exemption. We all know Obama hates Las Vegas, because it allows for freedoms the govt is having a hard time controlling.

You didn’t miss a thing, Florio. Just like the past ten years, the adds were pretty much “meh” for the most part. The glory days of Super Bowl adds has long since past us by and it’s time we all stop giving them so much attention until they can come up with something better. I mean we’re talking about something that any other day of the week, we would skip right on past with the fast forward button on our DVR.

AND SO IS THE SUPER BOWL IN EFFECT WATERED DOWN by these many tank jobs and blowouts of supposedly good teams by inferior teams all the way toi the super bowl and including it.
i realize ratings set records but only because there are zillions of more people and zillions more places and tvs today to watch the only thing on tv at that time.
