Bengals make Matt Jones an offer, too

After a full football season during which no one was interested in giving receiver Matt Jones a job, he now has not one but two suitors.

According to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bengals have officially made a contract offer to Jones

The Titans also have an offer on the table for the four-year veteran who was out of football in 2009.

Reedy reports that the Bengals’ offer is believed to be slightly more than the league minimum of $630,000.

Reedy reports that the Bengals also are expected to be interested in receiver Donte’ Stallworth, who was cut by the Browns on Monday and who worked out for the Dolphins Lions on Wednesday.

  1. When you are too damn cheap to pay for a pro-caliber scouting department, you constantly visit the scrap yard and hope you get lucky…and they raised season ticket prices for this?

  2. “Reedy reports that the Bengals’ offer is believed to be slightly more than the league minimum of $630,000.”
    Question:
With no salary cap, and thus no salary floor, they have still kept a minimum ammount that has to be paid to the player?
So on a 52-man roster they could hypothetically only spend 32.7 million on players compared to the previous floor?

  3. Wow! I’d love to make league minimum to sit on a bench and workout… I wonder what the owners are so upset about?!

  4. First the headline, and then this “Reedy reports that the Bengals also are expected to be interested in receiver Donte’ Stallworth, who was cut by the Browns on Monday and who worked out for the Dolphins on Wednesday.”
Come on, Bengals. At least make us WORK for the punchlines.

  5. The Lions better get this thing right and pay Stallworth to improve this team. I swear to Christ, if they blow these draft picks on receivers and running backs, I’m moving to New Orleans…

  6. not in the mood for a war here, i have no bones to pick with you people. however, matt harmed no one/no animal but himself. i think he has the right to a 2nd chance as much as anyone.

  7. Dolphins? Stallworth hit the guy in the crosswalk in Miami. Show some respect Florio. What’s the matter with you?

  8. I also heard that the Bengals made Rae Carruth a contract offer if he ever gets parolled! Why do they always go after the players with the worst possible attitudes and off the field discipline? And this is coming from a Raiders fan! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black….. LOL

  9. Cut a guy who killed a man in a vehicle accident and turn around and sign Todd Marinovich, I mean Matt Jones. Makes sense, same old Bungles.

  10. sooo….any “Real” news to report?
    p.s.
id give matt jones another shot before stallworth
    and everyone breaks the law
    not everyone gets caught
every man deserves a second chance

  11. He can fill the notorious void of Chris Henry. Hold your breath for another arrest to keep the trend consistent…

  12. Ok how much stupider can the Bengals get? Have the learned nothing? How many Bengal players get arrested, they have been out of football for less than a couple of months and already have had a player arrested, I don’t understand why they keep going after these guys? Its not like there aren’t other players available who are just as good with out histories that involve (for example) cocain use and parole violation.

  13. Figures lol WOW be proud of those Bengals players . I hear Charles Manson is a decent safety on the prison team . Work release anyone ?

  14. I think they should sign both… Who Dey! You get two good players for the minimum you could possibly play a veteran. Why wouldn’t you?

“Ok how much stupider can the Bengals get? Have the learned nothing?”
Really how much stupider can you get?

  16. if i was rich and famous, i too would do drugs and abuse alcohol. i love all the judgmental people on here. here, i’ll play your game, you guys probably all work at grocery stores and play video games all night long, and never get laid.

  17. This is just hilarious, and yes I’m a huge bengal fan. Not to justify it but honestly how many of these “athletes” are actually toe the line type guys. I may start watching Golf…oh wait a minute…

  18. …but for the doubters and believe me I was one too. Cedric Benson has paid serious dividends after his issues. Goes to show you never know. Vick might bust out next year and be mediocre again…

  19. the answer is simple the bengals organization is filled with cheap asses they could care less about the player’s past as long as they can sign him cheap. Character and reputation have no price tag value when it comes to the bengals. just look at there first round draft pick last year the slot was already set everyone was already signed all they had to do was just offer the guy the contract that fit the slot. But no the bengals would not even come close to that. Finally the kid gave in because he new they were not going to work with him because they could just fill his role with an ex convict for a league minumum. the seats sell out the money rolls in who cares what the player’s do, to there credit not a bad business plan though!

  20. The Bengals are by far the biggest joke in the NFL and prove it year in and year out. I honestly feel bad for their fans and can only imagine they hold on to see Mike Brown retire, except his son Katie gets to take over. Damn, you guys are screwed.

  21. Good Luck in life and football, Matt. There have been plenty of players who turned their lives around.. Jimmy Smith went on to have a Hall of Fame type of career with his drug problems.
I don’t know Matt but I know drug problems, having had to experience with my personal life.
We are alot more immature than we used to be, not everyone comes out of college with 4 kids and married like Phillip Rivers.

Are you really comparing a guy who got caught snorting some coke to a guy who orchestrated a mass killing?
also men don’t use LOL, I mean are you really laughing out loud when you type that shit?

  23. Go for it, we need a deep threat, he’s huge can run and we know he can catch, what the hell. As far as stallworth goes, that’s less exciting, but if either get signed and produce enough to keep us from having to use a 1st rounder on a WR that would be great. I still want Mardy Gilyard though.
This Class Sucks, really dude? You’re throwing the “stupid” tag around using the term “stupider?” Really? HA, it’s not even worth explicitly making fun of you, becasue of how much stupider you are then, well, everyone.

  24. Personally I would rather give a second shot to a drug case than about 90% of other situations.
Hell, fathering children to multiple women and being absentee fathers who just mail in checks monthly is a hell of a lot more morally wrong then snorting coke and we all know that no nfl players do that.

  25. The guy deserves a second chance. You could field a whole team of Hall of Famers that had drug problems at one point or another.
The real issue is that Matt Jones was a bust even before his drug arrest. I don’t understand what he would bring to any team.

  26. Matt Jones is not a bad guy, just stupid and lazy. Mad skills, but zero motivation. Good luck with Arkansas’ finest.

  27. I’d give Jones a shot, could be a great slot receiver for us if he still has some left. I also read they tried out Stallworth- that is not a good move.
I just hope he is the first to come in and not the last. During FA, I better see names like Marshall, Jackson, Flyod, or Hixon posting.
I love the double standard for the Jones move; I am sure it will be a great pickup for the Titans, but a typical move by the Bengals.

  28. What a way to upgrade your wr’s! Matt “Snowman” Jones & Donte “Stonehands” Stallworth, certainly there’s something better out there.
