Gailey: Bills interested in a veteran QB

Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey said today that he’s interested in acquiring a veteran quarterback.

“This is a quarterback-driven league at this point,” Gailey said. “It hasn’t always been that way, but it seems to have become more so in the last decade or so. You have to have a quality player there. It does not have to be a big-name player. You just have to have quality production. That’s the decision you’re trying to make.”

Tim Graham of ESPN.com reports that Gailey acknowledged the rumors that the Bills are interested in trading for a quarterback, including possibly acquiring Michael Vick in a trade with the Eagles. But Gailey said he hasn’t finished evaluating the three quarterbacks he inherited, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Trent Edwards and Brian Brohm.

“The staff got together completely yesterday,” Gailey said. “We’ve been spending the last day and a half going through the evaluation process. I’ve looked at them quite a bit but I want the rest of the offensive staff to look at quarterbacks and let’s get a good evaluation of where we think we are today and where we need to be. . . .  Before we get to the first day of free agency we’ll have a good idea of where we need to be.”

Video of Gailey’s press conference today is available at BuffaloBills.com.

Oh please, Donovan McNabb. You’ll grow to like him, I promise. He can win, just not in the post season. But, you guys don’t need to worry about the post season for a few years anyway. Besides, he’s a Syracuse grad, so there is something in common there. Oh please, pick Donovan, please, please.

I’d rather have Trent Edwards check down to our back-up tight end 10 times a game for the next 15 years before I have that lowlife Vick put on a Bills uniform.

  5. Snuff Smith says: Feb 11, 2010 5:32 PM

    Jeff George is available…

  14. Catamount says: Feb 11, 2010 6:16 PM

Carolina will give you Jake Delhomme and a fourth rounder for taking Jake!

  15. scrapdawg12 says: Feb 11, 2010 6:26 PM

Mike Vick….give him a chance…he might surprise you and he’s cheap for a 4th round pick….there is no 4th round pick QB in this draft that will be a stud…take a chance…give him a few weapons and see what happens, you have the runningbacks, got a good wide receiver in Evans, need a TE and another WR thats decent, not T.O. either

  16. Mooch says: Feb 11, 2010 6:27 PM

Maybe they’ll give us 6 first rounders and a bucket of wings for McNabb or Vick.
Truthfully, I cannot envision McNabb in Buffalo. Not sure why, size of market or weather maybe? He saw enough of that at Syracuse. Arizona would seem to be more his style.

  17. breesus says: Feb 11, 2010 6:29 PM

for a buffalo wing, hot dog and a 3rd round pick in sure philly will turn loose vick………………….

  18. PFTiswhatitis says: Feb 11, 2010 6:34 PM

  19. ampats says: Feb 11, 2010 6:34 PM

I am not a Bills fan BUT all these posters are dreaming of getting draft picks for their sorry QB’s( Vick, Anderson, Delhomme, Troy Smith, Bulger etc)
    But here’s hoping they do!!

  20. lamename says: Feb 11, 2010 6:41 PM

    fine:
    Garcia, bulger, Vick, McNabb
Maybe: Fitzpatrick, Brohm (no idea where he is in terms of talent)
    no: culpepper(INTs) delhomme(INTs) Edwards, Favre
    Quarterback made of Glass: Pennington

i CAN’T believe you guys are neglecting to mention gus frerotte…

  22. Ravensatron says: Feb 11, 2010 7:00 PM

J.P Losman is surely available for a 6th round pick…

  23. Moose Skyway says: Feb 11, 2010 7:08 PM

    Snuff Smith = Jason Whitlock
That being said, I am less opposed to the move than I would like to be.

  24. slipkid says: Feb 11, 2010 7:32 PM

pullpecker sucks. STDs are also available and would do just as good as pullpecker.

  25. Burnum says: Feb 11, 2010 8:03 PM

Some of you guys seem to have gone completely overboard with the idea of cashing in on their team’s (backup) QB’s…
No team in a half-decent state of mind would ever give a 2nd rounder for Troy Smith (unproven, with question marks as a passer), nor would any team give away anything more than a 6th or 7th rounder for banged up guys like Bulger or Delhomme (both might get released anyway, so why give away picks if you can get someone for free?).
As a Dolphins fan I do not like the Bills. But the idea of adding a proven veteran QB to offer leadership seems to make sense. Just look at what Pennington did with the Dolphins…

  26. bills9951 says: Feb 11, 2010 8:07 PM

troy smith for 2nd rounder? f u. thats stupid. i agree losman for a 6th…… hahahhahahaha, las vegas getting the 6th.

  27. Klytus says: Feb 11, 2010 8:22 PM

According to ESPN, the present assumption is that Vick will be released by the Eagles as opposed to a trade. The rumor is that Vick will be going to St. Louis.
While I think a trip to Buffalo would be beneficial for Troy Smith he is not, what one would call, a experienced quarterback.
    GO STEELERS!

  28. flipside715 says: Feb 11, 2010 8:32 PM

that’s three shitty QB’s that he has to finish evaluating…

  29. Thor says: Feb 11, 2010 9:13 PM

    I’ll do the evaluation.
Fitzpatrick: shouldn’t be in the league. Not even the UFL.
Edwards: Could be decent if he had a good coach. Whoops, don’t have a good coach. Trade him.
    Brohm: See Fitzpatrick.
But to be kinda fair, they should go after Jason Campbell from Washington. He’s not that bad and he’s young. Him and Edwards in a QB battle wouldn’t be horrible. Throw in a rookie like Colt McCoy or Tony Pike.

  30. mwcarolina says: Feb 11, 2010 9:51 PM

Jason Campbell for a 3rd or 4th round pick, please take that Buffalo.

  31. bufffan says: Feb 11, 2010 10:04 PM

Truthfully, I cannot envision McNabb in Buffalo. Not sure why, size of market or weather maybe? He saw enough of that at Syracuse. Arizona would seem to be more his style.
Seriously, you wanna believe Buffalo weather is so much worse than Philly weather. Check the news.

  32. kristoff says: Feb 12, 2010 12:03 AM

vick makes the most sense, considering we dont have a lt tackle and vick is a lefty. draft jevan sneed and let him watch 4 a year until we replace jason peters.otherwise, jason campbell would be a a nice addition.i”d even take tyler thigpin, gailey made him into a decent qb in kc.made the offense fit his streangths.someting we shulda done with JP.

  33. Burnum says: Feb 12, 2010 4:12 AM

Thigpen is under contract in Miami who gave up a 5th rounder for him before the season.

  34. bigfranky75 says: Feb 12, 2010 11:01 AM

Philly fan is DREAMING if they think that they are going to get anythign other than an 8th or MAYBE a 7th for Vick… puh-lease!
same with Troy Smith… a 2nd rounder? are you serious? laughable….

  35. FumbleNuts says: Feb 12, 2010 5:47 PM

“Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey said today that he’s interested in acquiring a veteran quarterback.”
    Paging Michael Vick?
