Bengals plan to let Graham walk

Last year, the Cincinnati Bengals were expected to use the franchise tag on receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.  But it would have cost nearly $10 million.

So they instead used it on kicker Shayne Graham, at a much lower one-year salary.

Now, with Graham’s one-year contract expired, they’re prepared to bid farewell to the man who has been their kicker since 2003 — and who missed two field goals in a playoff loss to the Jets.

WKRC-TV in Cincinnati reports that the Bengals will not re-sign Graham, who will become an unrestricted free agent on March 5.

Per the report, the Bengals worked out other kickers today, and they could soon be signing Dave Rayner.

That was a great decision to tag Shank Graham over TJ, LOL.

I’d guess any of the recent Dallas kickers would be available…maybe Jerry didn’t evaluate their tryouts.

They gave him plenty of time to establish a criminal record. They just got tired of waiting.

It WAS a great decision not to tag TJ

    @Laxer37 hahah Awesome.
Give that man a book, Florio.

Sure, blame the kicker. Shayne Graham had a good record with the Bengals. The Ravens made a similar decision with Matt Stover last year to their latter regret. The problem is that Matt Stover was the only Raven in the Superbowl.
    GO STEELERS!

Sorry to see Opie go, but those misses were ugly. At least the Bengals can count on Chad for a few PATs. Hey Cardinals, can we have Rackers back?

no need for tryouts, they got esteban

Good decision. Time to move on.
He was an excellent kicker for years, but he is no longer among the elite kickers.
Adieu, and gracias. Send him to Dallas or Washington where he’ll be an improvement over what they currently have.

Two good decisions in a day for the Bengals – sign Matt Jones and cut Graham. Too many crucial misses for Shayne. You can’t keep blowing big kicks and stay on the team.

I thought Ocho Cinco was kicking?

the same matt stover that choked in the superbowl and doesn’t have a ring? Stover is a joke, i don\t respect kickers, espeically nerds like stover that wear wedding rings on the field, dude you play football leave the wedding band in ur locker.

It’s a smart desicion to let shayne go he is starting to fade out. It was also a good decision to let T.J. go last year considering he is past his prime just look at his numbers last year they were his worst since 2004. I liked T.J. and Shayne alot but when they can’t produce up to a franchise tag salary cap hit let the has-beens go to Seattle.

Yeah That’s right Bungles get rid of Graham, and pick up Matt Jones a coke head, with Mr make it rain Pacman on deck, your on way back to the basement in the North, we all know your Superbowl was beating the Steelers twice, and Rosey Palmer choked like always
The Steelers will be kickin your asses soon enough.

He should just go sell some weed, do some coke, get a dui on a boat and beat his girl friend. Mike will bring him back tomorrow.

He is a great kicker, just wilts when things are on the line. He has missed late-game winning/tying FGs and Extra Points.
He cost us the playoffs in 2006 by missing an easy game-winning FG.
He had a high pct on kicks but I would bet the clutch kicks are well below 50% plus he couldn’t hit the long ones.
He also has had a lot of short and out-of-bounds kickoffs over the years.

Why is it that no matter what the topic is on this site, there are always some idiot Steelers fans commenting on it? Go ahead and talk your smack. I’m sure Mr. motorcycle boy and the dirtiest player in the league will both light us up this year…

hey domsdad, no kidding T.J’s stats went down. He was playing with Seneca Wallace (if that’s even his name) and Matt Hassellback. Unlike when he was with the Bengals, he was being double covered by teams. Sure, with a shit quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick in 08 he still mustered over 1,000 yards but that’s because Fitzpatrick throws it to one guy and one guy only (that’s why T.O. stats went up).

  19. domsdad says: Feb 13, 2010 1:51 PM

The Steelers fans are so childish they always mention the Bengals players who have been in trouble but never talk about Big Bens pending rape lawsuit. I’d rather have a player that has made the mistake of using drugs in his past than a rapist.

  20. domsdad says: Feb 13, 2010 4:38 PM

Thomas Paquette, I understand T.J. had the benefit of being a number 2 wideout instead of being a prime target. I just get irritated when people claim Mike Brown is an idiot for not paying 10 million for one year to a 32 year old number 2 reciever. The NFL has a salary cap (at least at the moment) and 10 million for a number 2 wideout isn’t a smart desicion.
