The good news is that it didn’t take long for linebacker Joey Porter to land back on an NFL roster.
The bad news is that he’s back with the Dolphins.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the release of Porter prior to the start of the uncapped year on March 5 would have pushed the Dolphins over the salary cap that still applies to the 2009 league year.
So the Dolphins won’t be able to cut him until March 5. And now everyone knows he’ll be cut.
Actually, the development could prompt any interested teams to consider trading for the balance of Porter’s current contract, in order to secure dibs on his services.
Maybe, then, the Dolphins’ error was intentional.
If it wasn’t, Dawn Aponte might be looking for another job far sooner than she had ever imagined.
guess the Dolphins didn’t read the fine print
Why would Dawn Aponte be the one on the hot seat? Jeff Ireland is the GM and Bill Parcells is the Executive VP of Football Operations.
You don’t think she somehow made this move in her first week of employment without running it past the bosses first?
Um, awk-ward.
AL Davis –calling the Dolphins” I am interested in Jerry Porter!”
If the Dolphins deal him prior to 3/5, wouldn’t they get a cap acceleration and be over the cap too?
And hes back

Talk about dumb rules that make no sense. The season is over, let the teams do what they have to do to prepare for next season, and let the player move on. Phins are on the hook for a million dollar roster bonus if he is still with the team on March 1, so coming up with this March 5 deadline is crazy.
could be a smart move on Miami
Women have no business anywhere near an NFL franchise unless they are in a cheerleading outfit
Dawn Aponte is an AWFUL hire by the Dolphins and messing up the Joey Porter transaction/March 5th rule is just going to be the tip of the iceberg in terms of the Dolphins future problems with her. Dawn Aponte is going to hurt the Dolphins more than she helps them for the following reasons:
1. She knows nothing about football and is known as Dawn “The Ice Girl” Aponte in terms of getting along with agents and colleagues.
2. Dawn Aponte could not even handle a simple renegotiation of Josh Cribbs contract and now she already messed up the March 5th Rule regarding the league year salary cap amortizations.
3. She was fired by the Jets, took a “finance” position with the NFLMC, and fired by Mike Holmgren as soon as he took over as President of the Browns. So now she is rewarded for her incompetence with a front office job with the Dolphins???
4. There will now be huge gaps in terms of the work flow and dialogue between Tony Sparano, Jeff Ireland, Bill Parcells, player personnel executives, Mike Dee, and player agents that Dawn Aponte is way too incompetent to fill.
5. Brian Weidmeir and Matt Thomas were great in football operations/legal and now the hiring of Aponte makes the Dolphins a mediocre team with an even more mediocre front office to a rival AFC team like the Browns.
6. She has so much severance pay from being fired by so many organizations for her incompetance she doesn’t need to work and can live off severance pay packages the rest of her life.
If Bill Parcells is being paid millions of dollars to hire incompetent non-football people like Dawn Aponte, Stephen Ross should think about selling the team immediately. I guess it is more important to be politically correct and engage in social engineering than it is to hire the best people. The Dolphins have just gone from contenders to pretenders.

welcome back peezy!…
… oops… dont bother unpacking…
come to philly, i say
I don’t think it was a surprise Porter was getting cut anyway, so there is little strategic value behind this.
Anyone that was going to give the Fins a pick for Porter at this point would be in more hot water than Dawn Aponte would be in.
haha i just went to the dolphins website and they had this to say in regards to Jerry Porter “The release of Joey Porter was determined to be an invalid termination. Therefore at this time, Porter reverts back to the Miami Dolphins roster.”
The herald says he has $1 million due on March 1st, so either they release him before then to save that money, or they pay him the $1 million and cut him after the 5th for no cap hit.
So which is better
Donald Ross has to stop hiring these celebrities.
