Pete Carroll signs one of his old players

As speculation intensifies that former USC coach Pete Carroll might hold a Trojan reunion in Seattle with guests like Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, there’s an early arrival to the party.

We wonder if he brought any homemade potato salad.

The Seahawks have signed Tom Malone, a two-time All-Pac-10 punter and a second-team All-American in 2004 at USC.

Malone has spent the last three years on the New England practice squad. He has never appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

It appears on the surface to be merely a courtesy; the Seahawks last season signed Jon Ryan to a six-year, $9.1-million contract.

Then again, there’s a new sheriff in town, and Pete Carroll might prefer to go with the guy whom he didn’t have to use all that often when guys like Leinart and Bush were moving the ball up and down the field.
