Andre Smith undergoes surgery

A. Smith.jpgBengals tackle Andre Smith fractured his foot just two days after ending his training camp holdout.  Five months later, he finally underwent surgery last week.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer writes this was a clean-up procedure intended to prevent a future break.  Smith recovered from his original injury in time to play the final six games of the season.

The recovery period should take ten weeks, which means he’ll miss a lot of time in the weight room.  He should be ready for Cincinnati’s Organized Team Activities in May.

The Bengals survived with a redshirt year from Smith last year, but they need him to win the team’s starting right tackle job. Judging by offensive line coach Paul Alexander’s comments last month, Smith did enough last season to be the heavy favorite for the job.

Now all Smith has to is prove he can stay healthy.  And not too heavy.

I wonder if he slipped the doc a few extra bucks to give him a breast reduction…

This guy has been a bum since ‘bama. Shows up greatly out of shape, holds out, and breaks his foot because of it. Guy only cares about himself and his money. He let his teammates down in college for the Sugar Bowl and let down the Bengals his rookie year for being a bum. No work ethic, only cares about himself and his money. Waste of talent!

He’s heavily favored, and easily the heavy favorite.

Why do people here so quickly question “work ethic” when a black player is out of shape? The guy started every game of his college career dominating all along the way and people still look for an opportunity to throw out the lazy black guy stereotype. A guy simply cannot have played as much football at as high a level as he has without putting in the work. God knows half the critics around here are people sloughing off at their job coming to PFT. Sure you can point out he wasn’t in as a good of shape as he should have been to start the season but how does that give people the right to sit in total judgment of the guy as a person? People love to hate so much nowadays.

Seriously, I have to give this guy the medal for stupidest comment on PFT ever. Who the F said anything about work ethic because he’s black? If he were white, black, green, blue, fat and out of shape, I would say the same damn thing. Way to make a racial overtone out of it. Straight from his scouting report “Smith’s work ethic has been called into question and leaving the combine early did not help”. If you leave early because a friggin voluntary combine is too hard, don’t do it to begin with. It was too hard for him because he didn’t apply himself. He’s garbage, and so are people like you for making everything racial.

It seems my comment touched a nerve with you fellows. I mentioned race because I know for a goddamn fact more than half of the animosity directed at black players on this site revolves around “work ethic” or “laziness” or being a “thug” and I’m calling out the . It isn’t even hidden by some. I read comments every day here where someone makes an overtly racist statement. At least we know where those folks stand. I’m calling out the people that hide their prejudice with stereotypes and then claim that race has nothing to do with it.

I think Andre Smith can still be a great OT. I don’t think he’s garbage, GiorgioMustica. Some experience and maturity may do wonders for him.
It has nothing to do with race, last starfighter.

Andre Smith is a morbidly obese, lazy player who demanded premier money without premier performance. As a Browns fan I’ve seen many equally lazy, overpaid black guys, white guys, and everything in between.
I don’t disagree that people on this site sometimes make racially insensitive remarks. Which is absolutely not the case here and has nothing to do with it. Who is making the jump between lazy and bad work ethic and that he’s black?

If there was a race then Andre Smith would definitely lose..

Completely agree. As I said, the combine was too hard for him because he didn’t apply himself. He was the best OT in the combine but he left early because of his work ethic and being out of shape. He can develop into a great player if he matures, however, he has yet to show anything. Great talent, but given what we have seen from him so far is not promising at all. Like I said, he’s been wasted talent thus far.

    Giorgio,
You have not seen anything? He rolled over fools in the last 6 games. For a rookie that missed TC and the first 10 games he did awful well considering. I get it though… he has questionable work ethic etc.. but to say he has shown nothing is a lie. He is in fact quite promising. Look at some film of him then give your opinion, before just spouting off whatever seems convenient.

Oh No! this is the worst possible news. He won’t be able to work out while he recovers and he’ll get fat!!!
