Shanahan, Allen talk Redskins uniform colors

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen have a lot of big decisions ahead of them in rebuilding a franchise coming off a 4-12 season. And apparently there’s no item too trivial to get Shanahan and Allen’s attention.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reports that Allen said on a recent episode of Redskins Nation that he and Shanahan have had discussions about the color schemes of the Redskins’ uniforms.

“I’m very proud of the Redskins uniform, and I’m very proud of our helmet,” Allen said. “I’m talking to Coach Shanahan about some ideas that we have of utilizing our colors that we’re very proud of.”

The bottom line is that the Redskins want to incorporate throwback uniforms, but they’re not going to add black to their color scheme.

And with that momentous decision out of the way, Shanahan and Allen can turn their attention to more important things.

I hope they dont add black. There is no point in adding black just for the sake of adding black. I would like those yellow pants to be brought back.

Any player on the team should have a clip of this story in his pocket and pull it out if ever the coach tells him to stay focused.

    Hallalujah!
There has been a proliferation of black in uniforms throughout the league, driven, no doubt, by the perception of the NFL’s marketing people that teams will sell more merchandise if they can somehow incorporate the color. The Detroit Lions are a perfect example. They added black accents as a “uniform color” so they could peddle those silly Carolina Panther-look alternate jerseys. Same thing with the Jaguars and their “blackout” look.
I don’t really care that much about the Redskins, but I’m pleased to read that they’re not following suit with this ridiculous trend.

What is the rule on wearing throwback uniforms? I see teams wearing them throughout the year but the ‘Skins weren’t one of them. I love (for what it’s worth) the dark red uniforms they wore during their 75th anniversary.
Actually, I’d prefer those over their current ones.

  9. Dolphinatic says: Feb 14, 2010 8:00 PM

Old School all dark burgandy uni’s (I forget what yr, but old school 60’s I think). My older brother loves the skins so I hate them, but those throwbacks they wore a few yrs back were awsome.

There is only one team in the NFL that has the true right to wear BLACK.

  11. swervinmervin says: Feb 14, 2010 8:13 PM

Bruce Allen likes the Redskins logo the way it is? Is that a shocker? Didn’t his brother lose an election because he referred to American Indians as “Mukakkas”!?

  12. Setobakura says: Feb 14, 2010 8:15 PM

What do the Raiders do if they want an alternate uniform? Teal?

I thought the reference to no black in the unis was a shot at Zorn, who thought that was one of the Skins colors, during his first presser. But I could be wrong.

  19. wwwmattcom says: Feb 14, 2010 10:02 PM

clearly the redskins thought they won the super bowl by the mere signing of shanahan. yikes, scary upcoming season.

I am very happy to see an NFC East team that has finished last for god only knows how long is so worried about the uniforms
Who did they hire to run this team the Hilton sisters?
The skins are a joke a shadow of there former greatness and they really give a shit about what they wear
As a fan I could care less what the giants wear as long as Eli gets his second ring this year the rest is meaning less dribble

I think it would be great if the Skins would steal the “sheepishly-grinning-’cause-he-just-got-caught-stealing” Chief Wahoo logo from the Cleveland Indians! What a riot…

  24. remurp says: Feb 14, 2010 11:19 PM

How many Super Bowls have the Giants won? No more than the Skins and yet you make them sound like they win every year. The Giants have fallen pretty far from that 07 Super Bowl win haven’t they. And, aside from the Yankees, the rest of New York Sports is crumbling. The Knicks, the Nets, the Rangers…even the Jets just get you excited and let you down when it counts. I think you will be surprised by who wins the NFC East in 2010.

  25. gurnblanston says: Feb 14, 2010 11:27 PM

Just like GoCaps8 says, bring back the sixties burgundy uniforms with the spear on the helmet. For a change of pace break out the gold “R” helmets and uniforms. The Skins-Giants game a couple years back with the “R” against the “NY” was tremendous. Kudos to the Giants and Jets for bringing back their old logos. The “GIANTS” and “JETS” helmets were absolutely ridiculous. Hey, Bigbluefan, keep Eli in the game and look forward to a season of meaningless drivel (or, as they teach it in Jersey high schools, “meaning less dribble”). Hail to the Redskins!!!

Its all good, since Al and Bruce Gradkowski “bitche_d you in the Burg this year.
The rivalry continues NO MATTER WHAT OAKLAND’s record is.
Dont call Oaktown out dude..if you got beat…its too easy for us to reply

  28. Ocho says: Feb 15, 2010 12:53 AM

Bigbluefan, the Skins have finished last in the NFC East two yrs in a row…but im guessing in your world thats a long time huh…and a second ring for Eli, HA w/ that crap defense you aren’t too far from the bottom yourself

  29. TheChief says: Feb 15, 2010 2:10 AM

@BigBlueFan, yeah, the ‘Skins have only been finishing last under Zorn, which has been a short time. Before that, they put regular whoopings on your Meadowland boys, even during their non-playoff years.

  30. Coach says: Feb 15, 2010 3:47 AM

It is actually burgandy and yellow- not gold. Look up a color chart. It is not even close. Burgandy and Yellow. The Saints are only team w/ real gold in its color scheme.

  31. iusedtobeteddybayer says: Feb 15, 2010 7:52 AM

Okay, Raiders wear black, win 6 games per year. Satisfied? I am.

  32. NoRingsForYou says: Feb 15, 2010 8:10 AM

Leave it to Raider fan to consider his season a success because they beat Pittsburgh. Meanwhile the Steelers, Patriots, Colts, etc. don’t consider their season successful unless they win the Super Bowl. Whatever happened to that “Commitment to Excellence” thing?

  33. smiley says: Feb 15, 2010 9:12 AM

Leave the color charts to Martha Stewart…it’s burgundy and gold. Hail!!

Well, there is my nomination for PFT fairie of the year. Who the hell brings up a color chart when talking football. He may as well say his favorite color is mauve or some shit.

    Steeler fan –
Get a clue, dude. The Raiders season was a complete failure. Just like the last 6. Nobody is disputing that.
All that was said is, you cant talk smack this season. We pummeled you at home, and both teams watched the playoffs on their TVs. Hell, that loss to Oakland was probably the reason Pitt didnt make the playoffs. Suck on that for a while, chief. Only as good as your last game. And last game we played against one another, was won by the Silver and Black.
    Later.

The only way I could be surprised about that is if the Lions win it. Or by even lesser chance, the 0-3gles.
