McCray: Williams made Peyton panic

New Orleans Saints defensive end Bobby McCray got a lot of attention — and got docked a lot of money — for his hard hits on opposing quarterbacks during the Saints’ playoff run. But McCray says it’s Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who’s really deserving of attention.

On ESPN’s Jim Rome Is Burning, McCray said he thinks Williams’ game plan for Colts quarterback Peyton Manning at Super Bowl XLIV was masterful, and he praised Williams for making Manning panic on the key interception that clinched the victory for the Saints.

“He was going against a great guy on our side of the ball, which is Gregg Williams,” McCray said when asked why Manning struggled. “He makes quarterbacks panic and do things they don’t want to do, and that puts our players in great position. As you can see, he thought he was throwing to Reggie Wayne but he threw it to us one play. It’s just the play design we have on defense. It was a great year and our defensive coordinator has done a lot of great things for us this year.”

McCray referred to Manning as a “great player” who was even tougher to prepare for than Brett Favre or Kurt Warner, the other quarterbacks the Saints faced in the postseason. But he said Williams has transformed the Saints into a defense that can beat any quarterback.

“He changed our whole persona,” McCray said of Williams. “We thought he was crazy when he came in. We had to do up-downs, which you only do in high school and college. Up-downs? You’ve got to be kidding me. We’re NFL players. But that got us disciplined to the point where anything he says, goes, and we believe it.”

WHY are we still talking about the Super Bowl?

  2. Seeryer says: Feb 15, 2010 5:18 PM

In a related note, Bobby McCray was paid $5.75 million this year and he had 1.5 sacks and 12 total tackles in 16 games. But at least he really knows how to take a cheap shot on a QB. By the way, watch the replay of the INT, Collie was open for the first down and had three yards between him and the defender. Peyton locked on to Wayne because he had a little success on that drive to him already. It was nothing the Saints did and had everything to do with Manning locking on Wayne, not becasue he was confused. Williams was so masterful that he gave up 475 yards to the Vikings and over 400 to the Colts. Winning heals all ills but Williams is still the most overrated D-coordinator in the NFL, with or without a ring.

  10. downwithdansnyder says: Feb 15, 2010 5:40 PM

Or how about Reggie Wayne continues his route in FRONT of the DB and if Wayne doesn’t catch it then no one does. You have to block the DB out of the play. That’s what was supposed to happen I think. So unless Williams told Wayne to screw up the route then I’m not sure the credit for that INT goes to Williams. BUT man I wish the skins had kept him. Another stupid move by Snyder.

Peyton threw more than one bad pass in that game. He rushed his throws, he threw two up for grabs of his back foot that luckily landed in gaps. He threw on too Jenkins who dropped it and if Garcon wouldn’t have pulled Greer back that would have been another pick six. Manning is great in the regular season. Maybe the Colts should let Peyton get them there then start someone else…lol

I’m amazed everyone keeps throwing accolades to Manning. Is this required? Manning lost the game. Simple. Basic. Anyone who knows football knows that he threw a really bad pass with really good coverage and it went for a really legitimate touchdown. Nobody else contributed. It was Manning’s bad. Yes, Williams had his guys study Manning on video. Manning lost that battle.

Because it’s the offseason and Florio can get away with telling the world over and over again how much he hates Manning and the Colts without pissing off too many fans of other teams. Because it’s the offseason and all and there’s nothing to really report.

  26. ChillyP says: Feb 15, 2010 6:14 PM

Before you talk about Peyton’s throw or Reggie’s route, you have to appreciate the play that Tracy Porter made. He saw it coming and blew it up in the only way you can. Whether it was pure football instinct, or just a lucky guess we don’t know. His career will tell. But he made one of the great plays in Super Bowl history all on his own, and in his own way. This is one cool customer.

Maybe the Cowboys can shine up some of those Lombardi Trophies they won over the years? When was the last one after…….the 1995 season? Since that last Super Bowl the Cowboys are 2-7 in the playoffs. In that same time period the lowly Saints are 5-2 in the playoffs and just won a Super Bowl.

Here we go again, more Manning apologist throwing Wayne under the bus. Excuses, excuses, excuses. After the mauling in Pittsburgh, Manning throws his OL under the bus and after the Super Bowl, he more subtly threw the rest of the team under the bus (and more overtly, so did Polian). On the other hand, when Carolina accuses Moss of quitting, Tom Brady comes to his defense. That’s the difference between a three time Super Bowl winner and well, Peyton.

I guess we will see how William’s defense does when opposing offensive lines get fed up with the late hits and start cut blocking. This game ends enough careers with out some low class, dirt bag of a coach teaching cheap shots. The other sad thing is Brees is gonna have to have his head set to full rotate because payback is a bitch. The league needs to levy a heavy fine against any coach who preaches late hits and is stupid enough to say so. Hope it happens as a QB should not have to worry about late hits on a clean play.
Bottom line though, the Saints won that game, fair and square.

Dude I was just saying the same thing…. one thing I will add, whether or not G. Williams was the reason that Peyton threw that INT, He very much may have been the reason the Saints won the game…. This article just shows you how much respect these guys have for him. I’ve read others as well, where the guys just defer to him. G. Williams should have been given the keys after Gibbs left, it was ridiculous for them to state “we are not rebuilding” then totally & completely change the offense, fire both coordinators and all the while hiring a new HC. Now he would never consider coming back to DC.

Allow me to throw a few things at you…
Peyton Manning Reg Season Rating 99.9 – vs. Saints 88.5
Brett Favre Reg Season Rating 107.2 – vs. Saints 70
Kurt Warner Reg Season Rating 93.2 vs. Saints 73.4
Forget the fact that these three HOF’s were held to a fraction of themselves.
#20 Arizona Cardinals had 0 Takeaways while the #25 NO had 2
#6 Minnesota Vikings Def had 1 Takeaway while the #25 NO had 5.
#18 Indy Colts Def had 0 Takeaways while the #25 NO had 1 pick six.
You see while I can understand your preoccupation with yardage yielded, you must understand that that is only important with a Def that doesn’t get takeaways. For example, the Vikings can only afford to give up 275 yards as they don’t take the ball away very often. Adding 8 extra possessions (or TD’s) to a team’s postseason creates a champion and Gregg Williams did that.
Also, for those who made the statement that Peyton made the mistake because he would get hit thanks for proving the point. The whole issue from day one was, hitting a QB causes him to make mistakes, hence Tracy Porter’s rise to stardom (thanks Favre/Manning). the funny part is Manning never got hit.

Reality is a bitch huh? years of being the NFL’s doormat and then the Saints all out DOMINATE the league. Crushed the Giants, the Pats, Philly…and all the fans of these teams and the Cowgirls can’t deal with it. Total denial. Even after they went 13-0 and destroyed three hall-of-fame QBs (Warner, Favre, Mannig) in the play-offs people want to continue the whine fest. Deal with it already: The New Orleans Saints are the CLASS of the NFL. Period. They have the best QB, best head Coach, best GM, best Fans. The list goes on. The uncapped year will be a total boon for them. They will keep all their restricted AND unrestricted fre agents that they want next year. Oh, by the way…they get back Jamaal Brown AND Charles Grant next year. Get used to seeing them on MNF and in the play-offs year after year after year.
As for Gregg Williams getting inside Peyton Mannings head? He DID. And it was all in the 2 weeks leading up to the game. All that talk about “remember me” hits weighed on Peyton’s mind because even though they never sacked Manning he was skittish as hell and he made LOTS of bad throws in that game. Gregg Williams was so far in Manning’s head he could smell the guy’s medulla oblongata.

    To all jackasses”most of you”.
Gregg Williams did not tell anyone to take cheap shots, he told them to give the opposing team “remember me hits”. If you have ever played football or coached football then you have told or been told to knock the hell out of someone. You are supposed to hit someone every play and make them hurt. If you don’t like the way the SAINTS”SUPERBOWL CHAMPS” hit your QB then stop them.
If any of you still think the Saints Defense sucks cause they give up to many yards then you should stop playing fantasy football. In real football you don’t get points for every ten yards of passing/running. They play a bend don’t break D. They gamble on D and sometimes it works sometimes they get caught. The great thing is this, the Saints D will only be better next year if we stay healthy.
