they should have kept thigpen. bad teams need mobile QBs who can throw the ball accurately on the run.

Let me help some of you out.
Cassel is not a system QB, he will be a good solid QB for the next handful of seasons. He is smart and highly professional and he throws it good enough. He got a bad deal this year all around, particularly with regard to his receiving corps.
And to those of you who think Tyler Thigpen was the future… well, i just hate you for being dumb.

Yea, and notice the Patriots never missed a beat. It makes you wonder just how good Brady really is. Better than Cassel, that’s for sure, but not the best in the league, like his ball washing fans think he is.
I don’t think Cassel is a bad QB, but at the same time, I couldn’t believe that the Chiefs threw so much money at him. Still, once the Chiefs get a half decent line, he should do fine for them. He’s not going anywhere.

Cassel is good. I watched him improve dramatically with the Patriots in 2008. I watched a few Chiefs games last year, and they probably had the worst OL in the NFL.
Tom Brady couldn’t lead the Chiefs, as currently constituted on offense, to a winning record.
Charlie Weis is a great OC and Cassel will thrive under him, once they get some pieces in place.

How does this compared to them paying him under the Franchise Tag two years in a row? I’m guessing this contract isn’t as unfriendly to the Chiefs as you may think when compared to the alternative.

Is there any information as to what they are paying him in future years? I wonder if this is a move by Pioli to pay most of the money in the uncapped year, then to pay less against the cap when the CBA gets completed. If so, then Pioli might just be smarter than we all give him credit for.

What about the final 3 years of the deal??? Would it be safe to say that while paying the guy over the life of the contract, he’s paid right at the league average??? I’ll answer for you…yes.
So while you open this topic up for people to ridicule the Chiefs, you might mention the other part of the story to that contract.
The final 3 years of the deal are an average of 7 million per. Would it be safe to say that if things get turned around in KC, those would be the 3 years you’d like to have more money to throw around to the other players?
Did we forget there WAS a salary floor they have to stay above as well?
as far as the Chargers fan you thinks trading Pigpen was a bad idea? Pigpen is unlikely to wear a Saints uniform and lead a team to the superbowl, unlike the cast off your team let walk.
His deal is perfect for the Chiefs AND the player.

Yet prior to the above quote you wrote..
“Chiefs brass uniformly says they fully believe in Cassel, and they know better than anyone how awful the team’s offensive line and receivers played last season.”
You know, as well as I do, that a QB is only as good as his O-line and, partially, his receivers. The fact is that KC has to do something about the entire offense surrounding Cassel.
In my opinion, Kansas City SHOULD BE one of the teams that goes out and makes a big splash in the uncapped year. They need to get some beef up front and stop being so tight with the dollars!!

Yet another reason that the pay scale in the most profitable league in the country needs to be adjusted so the most talented make the most money, not just the players that are free agents at the right time or rookies that are top end picks without one snap in the NFL.

As a Chargers fan, I’m glad that the Chiefs opted to sign Cassel and send Thigpen packing.
In that, the Chiefs severely handcuff themselves financially while sending a gutsy and improving QB to Miami. The guy’s mobility was a thorn in the side of opponents. He usually kept a lame KC team within reach of a win.

It’s good to know that the KC front office runs the team for the benefit of the Patriots. Most NFL teams are selfish, and don’t ever think of others in their greedy pursuit of success. The Chiefs have a much better perspective. And I’m sure that their fans will get a lot of pleasure out of seeing New England in the playoffs knowing that they played their part to make it happen. In Kansas City they know that winning isn’t everything.
