Deion Branch’s four-year run in Seattle started off slow, then got progressively more depressing, bottoming out last year with a 9.7 yards-per-reception average.
Due $5.47 million in 2010, logic says he won’t be back with Seattle. But the team may try to get something from him first.
Our buddy Tom Curran of Comcast Sports New England passes along a report that Seahawks G.M. John Schneider is planning to keep Branch. He’d also be willing to listen to offers.
(Our G.M. translator says: “We don’t have to worry about Branch’s salary until September because of the uncapped year, so let’s see if we can find a sucker willing to cough up a late-round pick.”)
Branch could have suitors as a free agent, but anyone that watched Branch play in 2009 is not going to trade for him, especially with his salary. Injuries have eroded Branch’s quickness.
Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times thinks the Seahawks are posturing, and we agree. It doesn’t hurt to try.
It would hurt to throw good money after bad by keeping Branch next season.
