Raiders reel in Seabass

Seabass.jpgThe Oakland Raiders have awarded the largest kicking contract in league history to one of the league’s largest kickers.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Sebastian Janikowski will sign a four-year, $16 million contract, including $9 million in guaranteed money.

It’s a well-deserved deal for the long-time Raider, who was arguably the league’s best placekicker in 2009.  Janikowski also consistently ranks among the league leaders in touchbacks.  (He was ninth this year after finishing in the top two in 2007 & 2008.)

The Raiders were expected to use the transition tag on Janikowski absent a long-term deal, but that didn’t prove necessary.  Oakland has perhaps the best kicker-punter combination in football with Shane Lechler and the man they call Seabass.

See, guys: we can say something nice about the Raiders.

Just a few years ago I was pulling for Seabass to get cut. I argued that we made a huge mistake not drafting Mason Crosby over FB Oren O’neill. Seabass has justified Al’s patience, even though he still hasn’t justified his 1st round selection. I’m glad he’s still with the team. At this point, he’s worth the money.

    Very Wise move

Two of your best players are your kicker and punter?….wow…..Sure helps those three and outs and lack of a red zone presence. ……in other news the Arrest Ticker is in double digits!

Isn’t it sad that the Raiders best draft pick in the last decade is a kicker

  5. BroncFanOr says: Feb 16, 2010 12:13 PM

At least they didn’t overpay for a fat QB who cares more about his fashion statements than his ability to play the game. Oh wait………………………………….

  6. GoBrowns19 says: Feb 16, 2010 12:13 PM

That dude kicked a 60 some yarder vs. the Browns that would have been good from 80…someone like that is worth 4 million on a team that needs all the points they can get.

  7. Bill In DC says: Feb 16, 2010 12:15 PM

Except they grossly overpaid (A Raiders habit).

Then what’s with all the talk of Nate Kaeding being mr. accurate/ best in the league?
ooh did you guys see that? It’s 9:21am PST and Nate Kaeding just shanked another FG attempt

Having ‘perhaps’ the best punter in football is nice, but remember the Steelers were the Super Bowl champions a year ago with Mitch Berger as their punter…

  16. RFM says: Feb 16, 2010 12:41 PM

He has already justified his first round selection. Look at the Punters/Kickers that came before Lechler/Janikowski in 2000:
    1999 – Leo Araguz/Michael Husted/Joe Nedney
    1998 – Leo Araguz/Greg Davis
    1997 – Leo Araguz/Cole Ford
    1996 – Jeff Gossett/Leo Araguz/Cole Ford
    1995 – Jeff Gossett/Jeff Jaeger/Cole Ford
Between Seabass and Jeff Jaeger there was a half decade of crappy Kickers. Seabass kicked the third longest FG in league history last year and is the leading point scorer in Raiders history. Al Davis got it right for once.

That pretty much seals the deal for Seymour. There was some talk about which fa should get tagged between seabass and seymour, but it’s pretty obvious what they will do now. I would be shocked if they don’t franchise seymour.

Your name says it best, that statement is a huge stretch. I assume you’re talking first rounders because the Raiders have had some very solid middle/late round picks. Even so, ever hear of a guy named Nnamdi Asomugha?

  20. BOO3LEGS says: Feb 16, 2010 12:56 PM

Don’t talk out of your ass. Nnamdi Asomugha is arguably the best corner in the game. He doesn’t get the Darrelle Revis type of exposure though, because he plays for the Raiders. Drafted 31st overall by the Raiders. Kirk Morrison drafted 78th overall, Thomas Howard drafted 38th overall. Solid picks. While the Raiders have had many awful drafts, they have hit on at least a few players.

  23. dcrespo24 says: Feb 16, 2010 1:09 PM

they will sign Seymour to a at least a 4 yr deal. no need to franchise tag him.

  30. nbcjim says: Feb 16, 2010 1:23 PM

As far as Raiders draft picks – Jamarcus Russel + Darius Haywerd-Bay = enough said…

  31. AutumnWind999 says: Feb 16, 2010 1:26 PM

Maybe it’s a little crazy to take a kicker in the first round, but you can’t call Janikowski a bad pick. Here are some of the busts picked before Seabass (at 17) that year:
    1. Courtney Brown
    4. Peter Warrick
    10. Travis Taylor
    11. Ron Dayne
Average players, not nearly as good as Seabass:
    14. Bubba Franks
    15. Deltha O’Neal
Guys whose careers were cut short or whose best years were with other teams after washing out with the team that picked them:
    2. LaVar Arrington
    7. Thomas Jones
    8. Plaxico Burress
So Seabass has worked out better for the Raiders than more than half the picks of the guys who went above him did for their teams.
Here are the quality position players picked above Seabass:
    3. Chris Samuels
    5. Jamaal Lewis
    6. Corey Simon
    9. Brian Urlacher
    12. Shaun Ellis
    13. Jon Abraham
    16. Julian Peterson
And of those only Urlacher and Ellis are still on AND premiere players on the teams that drafted them.
Chad Pennington, Shaun Alexander and Keith Bulluck are the only players picked behind Seabass in the 1st round worth noting.

Jano is going to be kickin for a loong time. People talk like he is a fatso who is out of shape(cuz they’re used to seeing scrawny kickers like Kaeding), but in reality Jano is one of the best built kickers in the NFL. He’s in great shape, is physically gifted, takes good care of himself and stays out of trouble.
He’s so strong he makes 50 yard kicks look effortless. He could be kickin 60 yarders well into his 40s.
That’s just the reality of the situation, but if you guys want to continue with your elementary school jokes, go ahead. We all get a laugh out of it. :)

Who would have thought that the tough guys in black would be so sensitive. To set it straight i didn’t forget about asomugha i choose to overlook that one good choice for the benefit of making a joke at just how bad all the other picks have been, especially the first round which was i was really making fun of. I wont comment on 2009 cause its to early to tell, except DHB does suck ass.
2008 – McFadden can’t stay healthy and is overrated
2007 – Zach miller could be decent the rest of that class sucks JaMarcus Russell’s huge fat lazy ass
    2006-Huff = hahahaha
    2005 – fabian washington – sucks
2004- Robert Gallery – it took him 5 years to become a good guard – he was supposed to be an All World tackle right?
2003- Nnamdi Asomugha – Al gets lucky and doesn’t screw this one up.
2003-Tyler Brayton – set career high in sacks last year – 5
    2002-Phillip Buchanon – overrated
2002-Napoleon Harris – can’t stay healthy, only topped 100 tackles 2 times in career.
2001- Derrick Gibson – out of the league
2000- SEABASS – best offensive player on the team for the last 10 years

Kicker and Punters have a very long shelf life playing in the NFL The Raiders having the best Punter in the NFL and maybe the best of all time and a Kicker that makes 50+ FG’s look like chip shots will be huge as they get better.
Rough years or not, you do not get to and play in an NFL record (14) AFC Championship games and (5) Super Bowls by accident. You hold that up next to say the Chargers whole (2) AFC Championship games played to date and one can see which History will truly judge to be GREAT.
I love it, the team that punked and thumped so many other teams has stumbled and all the punks that the Raiders had &^%$ slapped through the many years have grown a pair and are getting a kick out of getting some pay back.
Enjoy it while it lasted for the Raiders will be back and adding to that NFL RECORD as mentioned above.

    To the Raider Nation;
The joke is on you. Al has to overpay for a position that most teams treat as a step above waterboy. Why does he have to overpay? Because his mismanagement has turned the Raiders into a laughing stock. Seven straight seasons of double-digit losses. The Raiders owe JaWalrus millions this year whether they cut him or not. The seventh pick in the first round for DHB (DamnHugeBust) and then a second rounder on a guy evryone else regarded as maybe 6th/maybe UDFA? The worst home attendance in the entire NFL. The Washington Redskins almost double the Raiders in attendance. Yes that Al Davis is a GENIUS! Can’t draft. Can’t promote his team. But he sure can pay kickers.

    ——————–
Because he only missed 3 FGs all year: 45, 57 & 66 yard tries.
He also only had 3 tries inside of 30 yards compared to a guy like Kaeding who had 19 chip-shot opportunities from that range to build up his point total and accuracy pct.
Janikowski made more FGs from 40+, 50+ and 60+ than any other kicker in the league this year.
I’d say the guy who’s by far the best kicker in the league is worth more money than you’d pay for a third-rate o-lineman or 2nd-rate LB, WR, etc.
