Report: Bengals signed Jones despite awful workout

In the long history of PFT, this may be the first post in which a team trashes a player immediately after signing him.

So congratulations go out to the pair of Bengals team sources that killed Matt Jones’ workout to Yahoo’s Jason Cole.  Kudos to them for also throwing Pacman Jones under the bus while they were at it.  First, Matt Jones:

“It was one of the worst workouts I have ever seen,” one source said of the receiver. “I don’t care how fast his 40 time is or was, he’s a slow-twitch
athlete.”

Yet the Bengals signed him anyway?  The other source had similar words:

“He obviously has great size, but not even that is much of an advantage
when you don’t move very fast. He’s not really
the solution to what we need.”

Maybe a coach is trying to motivate Matt Jones through the press.  It’s more likely that the sources are fighting back against a move orchestrated by owner/G.M. Mike Brown.

At least Matt Jones has a chance to prove his worth.  Pacman may not ever get the chance based on this report:

“[Pacman] worked out, but he wasn’t really ready to work out, if you know
what I’m saying,” Cole was told.  “If he
really wants to get back in the league, I don’t know what he’s been
doing to get ready for it.”

But wait, it gets even worse!  The Bengals, as forgiving as a team can possibly be, were unimpressed with the excuse-making Jones made when asked about his past.

MDS and I were chatting about this story, remembering the days Pacman was the most exciting young cornerback in the league.  He’s convinced Pacman isn’t ever getting back in the NFL.

If the Bengals won’t give Pacman a shot, who will?

When you can sign someone who has potential like jones for cheap its almost like signing an undrafted free agent. If it doesnt work out through camp then he is gone. Suddenly they need help at WR and they are looking at all options to fix that. Maybe soon TO will be interviewing on OCNN.

ShannaRat might sign him. He intends to give Snyder’s fortune a good spending but Pac man would cost him nothing.
Bowlen knew it was time to part ways with his “little Napolean” coach. Go rat! Heres to watching you and Snyder stay in the ditch for the next 4 or 5 years.

Pacman’s gonna lie to himself for a few more years before he figures out he was lying to himself. Dude needs help in a very big way.

Matt Jones was never known for his quickness and route running. He is a big posession type of receiver. PacMan hasnt been good for years, no suprise here.

Just because someone is signed in February doesn’t mean they’ll make the team in September. If Matt Jones partakes in the offseason workout programs and gets into better shape, then he’ll have a shot to make the team. If not he’ll go back on waivers.
Also I don’t think signing Matt Jones has changed the Bengals draft strategy at all, which might include drafting 2 WR’s.

Pacman should be in jail. He may not get in there for what he’s done, but he will continue to break the law, & will eventually be there.

    @TheVillan
I cringe when I hear the Bengals drafting 2 WRs. Last time they did that they drafted Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson. A 2nd rounder who cant crack the lineup and a 3rd rounder who is a career #3 WR.

“The bengals was unimpressed with the excuse-making jones made” is quite possibly the worst set of words ever put together in an effort to create a real sentence.

So what? The 0-3gles signed Vick WITHOUT EVEN SEEING HIM WORK OUT. They paid him $8,839.78 for every yard gained. Or $533,333.33 per TD scored, if you prefer.

Stafford’s Johnson is right on. MDS and G.R. seriously need some refresher courses in journalism and english grammar. I mean come on, most of us PFT lovers only made it to the 8th grade anyway, but you are even offending us!

maybe jones isnt a great wideout cause he…. was a QB in college.
(so-called) talent evaluators screw up another player’s life.
chauncey pullpecker and jabustus bustell should have been tight ends. and ookie… maybe a kick returner. now, a bench warmer.
punkman? 5 years till dead or in prison? i’ll take the under.

  26. Hooby says: Feb 16, 2010 6:42 PM

assuming matt jones works his ass off and stays clean, he can be a solid replacement for housh. very similar play styles there, and i think palmers gonna benefit from having a west coast receiver back in town. coles and calle ocho are quick downfield guys while jones is gonna have a nice 9 yards per.
pacman jones…he can catch 6 punts at a time. why wouldnt you sign him?

  27. Laxer37 says: Feb 16, 2010 6:51 PM

When you don’t have a professional personnel department or a scouting program you do what the Bengals do every year…throw a bunch of s**t at the wall and see what sticks.

  28. shinsnake says: Feb 16, 2010 7:15 PM

Sometimes you see what you want to believe rather than what actually is so you take a chance on something that’s not going to work out. Happens all the time…how else do you think Obama got elected? That move backfired on America, and this move will backfire on the Bengals even if some consider it “low-risk.”

  29. antman111 says: Feb 16, 2010 7:37 PM

Might be a spot for the Browns to take a chance on Pac Man.. They need help at corner and he is a cheap option. They can focus their 1st rd. pick on another position and get a quality CB in the 2nd Round.

  32. Midnightgreen77 says: Feb 16, 2010 8:46 PM

I feel bad for Carson Palmer. He’s a top tier talent at QB, yet management signs on any loudmouth, deviant and degenerate that wears cleats expecting a winning product. If I were him, I’d pull a “Barry Sanders” and retire since he won’t be traded and he’ll never win with personnel moves like these.

  33. Kasper Gutman says: Feb 16, 2010 9:26 PM

The entire NFL has known that Matt Jones is straight line speed only and lacked good hips or cutting ability since the combine a few years back. Matt still produced two years ago and would have last year if he hadn’t been blackballed for a year. This is obviously a lower level personnel guy who got his foot stepped on by a higher up and has an axe to grind.
Vox if the Iggles give Vick the bonus and trade him for even just a 7th round pick the money will be well spent. Don’t be a hater Vox.

This article is about two players who can’t seem to get their life together. But these bigots can only concentrate on the Black one. One person even took a shot at President Obama. I guess he was supposed to turn this country around in ONE year.

Yeah, Denver REALLY TOOK OFF without Shanahan didnt they?
Shanahan FORGOT more about football then those Mile Noobs ever knew – welcome back to irrelevancy. Redskins have cap space and most of all MONEY to spend.

Hey “author”…read this out loud to yourself and think about how it sounds :
“The Bengals, as forgiving as a team can possibly be, was unimpressed with the excuse-making”
now take out everything between the commas:
“The Bengals was unimpressed with the excuse-making”
I think someone needs to step their game up.
Me and the readers was unimpressed with the use of English in this article.

  39. C_Munk says: Feb 17, 2010 12:32 AM

antman111 . . . Browms likely wont look at him, not Mangini’s type of player and I dont think its Holgrems either.
I feel like most people are looking at this signing like they expect Jones to come in and be the #2 behind Ocho. I think Bengals signed this guy with the intention he will be a 4 and if they are lucky maybe a 3 on the wr depth chart. Bengals need a tall redzone threat and thats where he fits in. . . potentially. Caldwell is Housh’s replacement, not Coles or Jones.

$3.1 million for a 7th round draft pick? You gonna pay that for another Moise Fokou or what? King Dunlap?

“Yeah, Denver REALLY TOOK OFF without Shanahan didnt they?”
8-8 with Shanny, 8-8 without him. As bad as the Redskins have been since 1999, they have won more playoff games than Shanny has.
“Redskins have cap space and most of all MONEY to spend.”
There is no cap for the 2010 season. You realize that Snyder has tendered over a billion dollars worth of contracts to free agents since he bought the team, right?

When someone quotes unnamed sources, how are we to know whether it is fact or if they just made it up to have a good story?
Anyone can say a “source” told them something.
The guy had 0ver 700 yards in an incomplete season and being thrown to by Garrard and noone to take the coverage. Look for him to hit 1k with Palmer and Ocho getting doubled.
