On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that receiver Miles Austin won’t be leaving Dallas.
On Wednesday, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the franchise tag won’t be applied to Austin to ensure that he stays put.
“We don’t need to use the franchise tag,” Stephen Jones said. “How many times have [you] seen another team give up a one and a three?” (As a reader points out, didn’t the Cowboys give up a one and a three and a five for Roy Williams?)
But Stephen Jones is overlooking the point we made earlier today, echoing Howard Balzer’s assessment of the NFL calendar leading up to the uncapped year. If the Cowboys don’t apply the franchise tag to Austin by February 25 and if a new CBA is finalized before March 5 and if the new CBA sets the minimum years of service for unrestricted free agency from six years back to four, Austin will hit the open market.
Besides, even though the highest RFA tender will cost the Cowboys more than $6 million less than the franchise tag, it can’t be assumed that a receiver-needy team picking at the bottom of round one (e.g., the Ravens) wouldn’t decide to devote that low first-round pick and a low third-round pick on a guy who has shown that he can be a dominant receiver.
Throw in a Hutchinson-Burleson poison pill that makes the full amount of a six-year, $53.999 million contract guaranteed if Austin plays more than five games in any year in the state of Texas or if at any moment he doesn’t have the highest annual average compensation for any receiver on the team, and the Cowboys would have a hard time matching the deal.
So if the Cowboys are serious about keeping Austin, there are only two ways to make it close to a sure thing — use the franchise tag, or sign him to a long-term deal.
didnt jerry jones give up a one and a three for roy williams?? and a sixth?? how’s that workin out for ya? HA!
Uhm, Jerry – just remember that money talks and bullsh…well, you know the rest.
I hope they’re not serious.
I’d love to see him in a Viking uniform.
Berrian sucks.
i believe Jerry when he says Austin isn’t going anywhere
Poison pill + first and third = done deal.
Austin should look for housing in the Bay Area and in our nation’s capital.
Austin looks like ARod when he has his helmet on.
I’m pretty sure Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones has a good understanding of the NFL calendar leading up to the uncapped year, and doubt he is “overlooking” those timelines.
I’m also pretty sure he knows what he and Austins agent have been talking about to get a deal done.
All that CBA/RFA/UFA talk is irrelevant. Jerry will be sure Austin is locked up for AT LEAST 5 years before any of that nonsense goes down.
I believe Jerry when he says Austin isn’t going anywhere and unfortunately I believe him when he says Roy Williams isn’t going anywhere either.
cowboys are playing with fire on this one if they don’t plan on signing austin to a long term contract. tony homo is an average qb with austin, we have seen what he has been without him!
Which owner (and remember: these are the guys making the decision on the new CBA) is willing to change any of the regulations for the 2010 league year which starts in two weeks? No one (and they only need 8-9). So how likely is it that any of this guys would vote yes for a new CBA within the next two weeks?
Nonsense.
I guess the owners have a gentlemen’s agreement in place which will limit spending in the uncapped year, therefore putting additional pressure on the NFLPA.
The owners will act in unison in this case. It does them a bigger favor than breaking the bank in a move to get a Lombardi. Even Snyder understands that.
@ rjgreen
Yeah without him he led his team to a 13-3 season. People hating on Romo because he is Romo are irritating.
Stop it, Florio, Austin’s not going anywhere, when was the last time JJ lost a FA he wanted to keep?, The money we lost on Williams was more then offset by the $42 million the NYG’s paid Chris Canty while we signing Igor for $18.
I think there is a rule stating you can’t put a poison pill in player’s contracts anymore….
Unless Jerrah figures out a way to make a trade with himself, they should be safe.
You guys act as if Austin doesn’t have any say in the matter, like some team can swoop in and have their way with him for a first and a third whether he likes it or not.
I’m guessing Jerry knows the status of the CBA talks and is knowledgeable on whether or not there is even a remote chance that a deal could be reached before the uncapped year kicks in.
“We don’t need to use the franchise tag,” Stephen Jones said. “How many times have [you] seen another team give up a one and a three?”
You did – Well done, jack ass. Not to mention the 45 mil. It gets funnier every time.
There’s no rule against poison pills, but it’s rumored that there’s an unwritten rule that all teams have been honoring to the point of an accusation of collusion (whosawthatcoming?) from PFT since Burleson/Hutchinson.
Id lov to see him on the ravens….make it so Ozzie!
“So if the Cowboys are serious about keeping Austin, there are only two ways to make it close to a sure thing — use the franchise tag, or sign him to a long-term deal.”
Uhhh, gee signing a young, talented, rising-star WR to a long term deal??? No way! I’ve never seen that done before!!
You talk as though that kind of thing is unheard of Florio.
@Chapnasty
the truth is always irritating. Homo is not the answer……choke, choke, choke
(As a reader points out, didn’t the Cowboys give up a one and a three and a five for Roy Williams?)
=============================
And the reader & you would be WRONG. Dallas gave up a 1,2,&5 for Roy Williams and Detroit’s 6, which means they didn’t surrender the 5th round pick, they moved about 5 spots down in the draft.
==========
“You did – Well done, jack ass. Not to mention the 45 mil. It gets funnier every time.”
SO? He didn’t say ‘have you EVER” he said “how many times, so who’s the Jackass here?
In fact, since people are constantly screaming that the deal wasn’t worth a 1 & 3 it actually makes Jones statement stronger. You seriously think a team is goingto give up a 1st & 3rd rd pick for a guy who was hurt so much he ended up on injured reserve his first two seasons, missed almost a seasons worth of games over his first 3 seasons and has only put up good numbers for 12 games? I don’t. Austin is still a risk player with more value to Dallas than anyone else. You don’t know if his performance was an aberration or what he really is, so any team giving up a 1 & 3 AND a big money contract is taking a huge risk. If Austin continues his performance level next season, then yes, I think there would be a number of teams willing to give up a 1&3 to get him. Of course, if they wait and he does perform they’ll never get the chance because Dallas will have either signed him to a long term deal during the year (see Romo, Ware) OR they’ll franchise him.
Coughing up a 1 & a 3 AND a big contract is not likely.
Austin is a good up and coming reciever and Jerry will not let him get away, another great cowboy is Jaden Wainwright only if Jerry could get him someday youtube or google his highlights, young man is a stud!
Well if they do lock up Austin at least they will have ONE good receiver.

yeah a two time pro bowler who led the league in TD percentage…oh and Austin has been on the team since Romo has been the starter…EEEDIOT!!!
“the truth is always irritating.”
The truth is that you’re a dumbass for saying that Romo sucked without Austin.
The phone is ringing Miles…. and its the Tuna and super fan on the line
F dallas
austin is a scrub
oh my god he ran up 250 yds/2tds on KC – no defense – THEN he put 170yds/ 2tds on ATL who had injuries to both starting cbs and I think one starting saftey or something…. that was his 2 best games…… HOLY Sh!!!!!!! he’s a dominant reciever
I mean to be honest he had a good one against the raiders too…
you know what he ran up on the Skins?
week 11 he caught 4 for 47yds no tds – what’s that 11.2 ypr?
then in week 16 he did 9 for like 95 yds no tds that’s like 10.2 yds a reception….
I think GB held him to 1 catch for like 5 yds or something
that is some dominant sh!!!!!
HAIL SKINS!
“austin is a scrub”
O RLY?
Austin 11 TDs
Antwaan Randle El + Santana Moss + Chris Cooley + Fred Davis = 11 TDs
“you know what he ran up on the Skins?”
Two easy wins, just like every other NFC East team.

“F dallas
austin is a scrub…”
Hey, dumbass, way to conveniently leave out the 7 catches for 139 yds and a TD Austin had at New Orleans. And the 7 for 82 and a TD he had against Philly in the Cowboys’ playoff win. If Austin is a scrub, what does that make Santana Moss? He had only 1 100 game all year, and that was against the pathetic Lions.
“it can’t be assumed that a receiver-needy team picking at the bottom of round one (e.g., the Ravens) wouldn’t decide to devote that low first-round pick and a low third-round pick on a guy who has shown that he can be a dominant receiver”
this sentence is very confusing at 2:30 in the morning. still haven’t figured out what it means
Not to worry…Jerry has a handle on it. Jerry know everything…like:
How easy it will be to win SB’s without Jimmy…
What a great head coach Dave Campo is…
What a great QB Quincy Carter will be…
Eddie George can still get it done…
Parcells with get over the signing of T.O…
How to play “Pac-Man”…
How to build a practice facility…
How to trade for a wideout…
How to pick a plastic surgeon…yikes!
Jerry will keep him.
My point is Roy Williams SUCKS which, in fact, makes him a jackass for making that trade and giving that loser 9 mil a year.
Austin, I think is pretty good. Maybe not great but, he’s a decent receiver. He should be getting the money, not Williams. That’s all. No, I’m not saying he’s worth 9 mil a year either but, he is clearly better than Roy Williams. I actually think Patrick Crayton is better too.
@ ceetown
Are you ill in the head? He finished 3rd in the NFL in receiving yards. And he only started 9 games. Your math is not only incorrect but, well it is just incorrect.
For comparison:
Santanna Moss: 902 yards 3 TD
There was no other Redskins receiver in the top 50 in yards. The two guys ahead of Austin in yards were Andre Johnson and Wes Welker. So in closing, you’re opinion is based off of hatred and you are sir, wrong. Thanks for playing.
@ rjgreen
The truth is irritating, which is why you are irritated. He has choked once, and has been pretty statistically consistent since. If you are an Eagles fan, McNabb has been choking his entire career and if you aren’t then that was my shot at McNabb for the day.
What is also irritating is the complete lack of creatvity in the name “homo”.
They have to have a deal in the works. Even the Cowboys brass isn’t so stupid to risk losing their best WR.
Im not an Austin fan. I dont know just a buit too cocky for my liking. However he has took a big step from where he used to be. I still think DeSean Jackson is the better receiver. Heck I even think Jeromy Maclin will be a better receiver then Austin. However Ill be honest and say Austin “COULD” be above average if he keeps his play close to this level.
People take cracks at Romo because he is with the Cowboys and well quite frankly the Cowboys are a classless team with players who want to talk trash (Mike Jenkins and others) with an owner who only cares about money and media (when was the last time he really really took an intrest in helping the community). And the biggest thing is you know damn well that the media builds tyhe coweboys up more then what they are sometimes. You know dfarn well the media wants the Cowboys to succeed. It gets old to us other fans. However thats not Tonys fault. However what has McNabb really said or done to deserve cheap shots? He is a class act and the BEST leader of a team with always saying the right things and keeping things in house etc. (him and Peyton actually) Tony and McNabb are alot alike unfortunatly. Both will give you great regular seasons (about 10+ every time) but the chances of them delivering a SuperBowl title is slim…
“Coughing up a 1 & a 3 AND a big contract is not likely. ”
Unless you are Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder.
Shhhh o0OMorrisO0o, the adults are talking. Good boy.
@o0OMorrisO0o …. did you forget to take your medication??
Right on Florio. You and your cronies have a bead on this. Clearly Stephen Jones and Co. haven’t pondered the scenarios you bring up. Hopefully they are reading and you jokers are checking your email.
“Im not an Austin fan. I dont know just a buit too cocky for my liking. However he has took a big step from where he used to be. I still think DeSean Jackson is the better receiver.”
Oh. So Mr. “We gon’ sting they ass” isn’t too cocky for you? You know, the guy that was so preoccupied with his TD celebration that he forgot to score the TD first? The one-trick pony that can’t run a route to save his life? The guys that the Cowboys have SHUT DOWN four straight games in a row now?
Look, Vox Veritas is doing his Keith Brooking impersonation again!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Isn’t there a spatula waiting on you somewhere? At 5:07 AM no less hahahahahaha
