PFTV looks at whether Vikings should dump McKinnie

As the world waits for the NFL to fine Vikings left tackle for his shameful behavior during Pro Bowl week (Peter King has joined us with arms crossed and foot tapping), the Vikings face a bigger question.

Should they keep McKinnie?

PFTV looks at the issues presented by this thorny issue.

It’s OK to dump him, but you need to have a plan to replace him.
His play has never lived up to his antics.

  2. kennethnoisewater says: Feb 18, 2010 9:44 AM

They should dump him….. he’s physically talented, no disputing that, but he doesn’t exactly have the mindset of a winner and he’s also notorious for telegraphing plays with his stance.

  3. Nevisyakker says: Feb 18, 2010 9:44 AM

McKinnie is a jerk, a turd, a mental midget with the emotional control of a rabid chipmunk.
That being said, the Vikings aren’t going to be able to sign a quality free agent at the position for at least this year and they aren’t going to take a big step backwards at that critical position by plugging in a draft pick, especially since they draft so late.
They are tired of him. They’ve given up hope on his “growing up” and acting like a reasonable human being. But—-they don’t have any quality choices.

  4. BillyBob says: Feb 18, 2010 9:49 AM

How would the Vikings expect to replace him? They have more important holes to fill other than that a$$wipe. We all know he is a P.O.S. but the Vikings are stuck with him.

  5. FootballOnly says: Feb 18, 2010 10:02 AM

Even though he doesn’t deserve to play in the NFL becuz of his antics, he does have talent and is one of the best LT’s in football…..a position that is the most valuable on an offensive line. Pretty hard to dump him at this stage.

  6. gopher says: Feb 18, 2010 10:02 AM

McKinnie should be dropped because he “stood up the pro bowl”, but allow Vick back after killing dogs, Stallworth after hitting and killing somebody while drunk, Little hit and killed a woman while drunk but is still playing but by God don’t screw with the Pro Bowl. I think what McKinnie did was wrong but cut him for that?

  7. Rick says: Feb 18, 2010 10:03 AM

why would they dump a pro bowl LT? Did he do anything to hurt the team? Yes he embarrassed himself at the Pro Bowl but why would the Vikings get rid of him. They made the NFC championship game with him and have a great running game with him.

  8. Ambrose says: Feb 18, 2010 10:04 AM

The Vikings should do everything that they can to keep him. They are the best team in the NFL..bar none. If you take one link out this terrific magical chain called the Vikings, they may not ever get back to the spectacular level of accomplishment they enjoyed this past season. Bring him back. Bring Favre back. Bring everybody back. Don’t make any changes at all. Don’t jinx something so special. Keep the superb effort and momentum from 2009 going all the way through next season! Everyone knows (but won’t admit,) that the best team did not win the NFC championship…so keep that top-notch team intact. The Vikings are truly amazing and the whole world should know it.

  9. ampats says: Feb 18, 2010 10:12 AM

Waste of talent. Displays the maturity and decision making of a 12 year old.
He embarrassed himself and unfortunately his family by his most recent display not to mention this is not his first foray into stupidity (love boat)

  10. bluestree says: Feb 18, 2010 10:14 AM

Even if they keep McKinnie, Farve may look at the beating he took in the NFC Championship and say no thanks. It’s all about the legacy. To get him back, the Vikings need to spend the offseason looking to improve their pass protection above everything else, including the secondary.

  11. Postman says: Feb 18, 2010 10:15 AM

    A Vikings segment. Not surprising.

  12. JimmySmith says: Feb 18, 2010 10:20 AM

In my book, he is the face of the MN Vikings; no one denies his talent, they just question his heart, his willingness to perform when the spot light is the brighest. Add to his uneven performance, all the off the field issues which are remarkable in their sheer stupidity from licking hookers to felony battery to the pro bowl BS and you have the perfect Viking player; good enough to play in the NFL but not very good when it counts the most, morally bankrupt but hardly noticable inside an organization that seemingly promotes criminal behavior and brain dead from the neck up, a trait he shares with his head coach.
The Vikings will never win as long as they continue to cheat (Starcaps), employ the criminal element, and basically trade their collective soul to entice players out of retirement. That, plus they choke all the time.

  13. purpleguy says: Feb 18, 2010 10:22 AM

The guy’s a grade A dope and has a hard time with speed/edge rushers, but even average left tackles like McKinnie are tough to find. There is no available replacement on the team, and as a final 4 team the Vikes’ free agent options are limited. As a result, they’re going to have to live with the Love Boat organizing, pole swinging, pro-bowl skipping dope for another year or two.

  14. purpleguy says: Feb 18, 2010 10:26 AM

I agree that McKinnie is a grade A dope that also has trouble with edge/speed rushers. However, even average LTs are hard to find, the Vikes (as a final 4 team) don’t have many free agent options, and there is no one on staff to replace him. A a result, they will have to live with the Love Boat organizing, pole swinging, Pro Bowl skipping dope for another year or two. Besides, Pack fans need something to whine about.

  15. VikesandColts Fan says: Feb 18, 2010 10:43 AM

Hey now! Watch out before he hits you with foreign objects.
It’s too bad about him. You would think playing with great guys like Hutchinson and Birk would have straightened him out. Guess not. Another super talented player who didn’t wanna work and fulfill his potential.

  16. lebowski says: Feb 18, 2010 10:45 AM

Ahhh, sure….. they will dump a starting left tackle, because replacements are so easy to come by. Gimme a break.

  17. Dixon29 says: Feb 18, 2010 10:46 AM

I say they should cut him. A team with a great LT (Cleveland, NYJ etc.) would love to have him as a RT. His play never lived up to being the stud LT he was supposed to be anyways.

  18. rlm says: Feb 18, 2010 10:50 AM

The fish stinks from the head down, McKinnie only acts like this because the Vikings enable him. So much for cleaning up their act from the love boat.

  19. DuluthFan says: Feb 18, 2010 11:05 AM

Isn’t RT Loadholt’s natural position? I mean, we would still need to replace a tackle position, but…
    Can anyone confirm?

  20. zappa says: Feb 18, 2010 11:12 AM

This is great, a bunch of FANS bashing a NFL player. Fans that never played the game, or any team sport for that matter bashing an idiot multi-millionaire. While I agree that this guy has made many bone head choices, he’s just a football player. The love boat was put together by a Washington Redskin corner. McWimpie was just there for balast.

It must suck to have your team beaten twice this year by this band of losers, huh?
BTW – Cheaters (by your definition — not mine) do win, the Saints have two guys who used StarCaps as well….

JimmySmith, how nice it must be to sit on your throne of morality and judge others. Especially considering that Johnny Jolly is facing stiffer drug charges than the Williams’. And to talk about how the Vikings choke when they went deep into the playoffs and your team was one and done is even more ironic! You’re quite the moron.

  24. DocBG says: Feb 18, 2010 11:48 AM

    @JimmySmith
Perhaps instead of partying with some women of legal age it would have been better had he just hoped int0 a hot tub with their children? then the whole state could rally around him and make sure that he got off scott free. Consensual sex without the exchange of money (something you would know nothing about) in public is certainly wrong, even if you serve your punishment but it sure beats statutory raping a minor, and then having the state look the other way. Lets not forget the fact that your coaches kids are raping people, AT THEIR PARENTS HOUSES. but sure, mckinnie is probably a terrible person for getting a piece on a boat.
BTW, the fudgies would jump at the chance to sign such talent to their offensive line. The vikes should keep him, but invest the time to see the changes that they want.

DCViking says: It must suck to have your team beaten twice this year by this band of losers, huh?
Not half as much as it must suck to go 0-5 in your last 5 NFC championship games (although this year’s OT loss was closer than your last one, a 41-0 loss to the Giants, which must have really hurt after the 15-1 season playoff loss to the Falcons) or to go 0-4 in Superbowls.
Choke on that thought but hey, you just signed Fat Ass Williams so its time to claim another paper championship.

    ————————————————–
There’s a difference between the Saints players and the Viking players. The Saints took it like men. They didn’t fight the process because they broke the rules and they knew it. In fact, one of the Saints players actually had to pay a fine and serve a 4 game suspension. The other was absolved by Goodell because it wouldn’t be fair to punish him and not the Vikings. By all rights, the other Saints player could argue that he should be reimbursed for the money he was forced to pay. But he didn’t because he knew it would hurt his integrity even more after he basically plead guilty. Once again, handled it like a man.
Fans are willing to forgive players who fess up to mistakes. I’m sure you’ve managed to forgive Favre for his pain killer addiction. And that’s why you have to remind people that there were Saints players involved. What fans hate are spineless chicken shits who exploit a loop hole in the system to get away with what could potentially be major violations. That’s why the Viking players are constantly being hounded by the media and are not respected by fans outside Minnesota.
Viking fans can make all the excuses they want about how it’s the league’s fault and the rules aren’t clear. Fact is, the Williams boys were responsible for themselves, not the league. And one other point, not one Saints fans spoke out against the suspensions. Even after it was made public that the league could have communicated better. Even the fans took it on the chin and rolled with it. Not Viking fans. You whiny bitches screamed to high heaven. I guess an organization’s fans really do reflect the integrity of the team.

    No, quite honestly, it doesn’t…
I’m not on here telling everybody how bad or unworthy the teams that beat the Vikings (New Orleans, Giants, etc.) are (as every statement you make about the Vikings). I’m not saying that every move these other teams make is wrong.
The fact is all teams make good moves and bad moves, Most (if not all teams) have good players and bad players, but only dolts like you are dumb enough to only identify with the bad players / bad choices the Vikings make; therefore, you label the Vikings are hopelessly incompetent — incapable of functioning as organization at any level.
Then, as I stated previously, your team goes out and gets beat twice by a team which you identified as hopelessly incompetent…not just bad, but historically terrible.

The NFL is full of thugs and criminals….take a look at the police blotter on this very website. Most of these guys would be in jail if it werent for pro football.
    Now…lets take a look at this anger issue you must have;
Youre hero signed with Minnesota….let it go already. So much hate. 90% of all the star players will or have signed with another team at the end of their careers. I understand it mustve been such a huge slap in the face for the face of the Packers to sign with your arch rival. You should take some solace in knowing he didnt win us a SB. Look, take off the “Die Favre Die” t-shirt, take your hand off little Jimmy, wipe off the laptop and come out of the closet. See if your mommy has dinner ready and if not, go outside and watch the cars rust until football season comes and you can find another purpose for your meaningless existence. Let it go man. Seriously, you guys call yourselves great fans, but you wear cheese on your heads…seriously, cheese….CMON MAN!
