Report: Pendergast quits Raiders for Cal coordinator job

Early this month, former Chiefs defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast accepted a job with the Oakland Raiders as their secondary coach.

It didn’t last long.

Pendergast has reportedly left the Raiders to become the defensive coordinator at Cal. The defensive coordinator job at Cal opened up on Wednesday, when Bob Gregory quit to become the defensive coordinator at Boise State, and Cal moved quickly to get Pendergast, who won’t have to move out of the Bay Area.

Pendergast is heading back to school after 15 years as an NFL assistant. He has previously been an assistant with the Cardinals, Browns, Cowboys and Oilers.

Bob Gregory left Cal to become a Boise State defensive assistant, NOT coordinator. (Read the article you linked to)

Pendergast probably had a second meeting with dead Al and ” said I am out of here “

So the Cal d-coordinator left for the same job at i>Boise State and is being replaced by a former NFL d-coordinator? Pathetic.

The DC at Cal left to become a defensive asst. at Boise, not even co-ordinator? Not even a lateral move? Well, then.
Too bad Florio didn’t write this post. He would have pulled some wildly enjoyable yet totally speculative rumor out of his ass to generate hundreds of outraged response from PFT nation.
    *sigh*

Well, I guess he went from DB coach to D. Coordinator.

LOL. You people never cease to make me laugh. Is your team so bad for so long you have nothing better to do than wait for a Raider post so you can show the readers what a little !blam! you are? Especially this chucklehead that ends his post “go niners”. Dude, look at your team, they are a joke. You probably think Mike Singletary is the answer to your laughingstock of an organization. Pull your pants down lately? That is a GREAT way to make a point. Hey rjax who’s your team? Unless it’s the NO saints you don’t have spit to say. Only one team had a successful year so STFU

Everybody should jump ship on the Raiders they’re a joke. 49er fans will never share a stadium with these clowns.

You guys are clueless. Being a DB coach in the NFL — for any team — is definitely a step below being a coordinator at a perennial Top 25 school like Cal. Move makes sense for Pendergast if he wants to move back up to a DC or HC job either in college or the NFL — especially with the chances for an NFL lockout in 2011.

So much for “ignoringthehaters”. I’ll give you credit though, you do have a point. The only fans that truely have room to talk shit is Saints fans ths year. Unless of course the shit talking is directed at Viking fans or their organization.

“Good luck coming back to the NFL, jackass.”
There isn’t a team in the NFL that would take anything that happened with the Raiders into consideration for any coach. Furthermore, since when does the NFL hold grudges against players or coaches who perform?
“Especially this chucklehead that ends his post “go niners”. Dude, look at your team, they are a joke. ”
I’m not a 49er fan but, seriously, if there’s one team that can’t throw stones about another team sucking, it’s the Raiders. It’s best just to take your medicine and shut up because your gun is empty.

  22. Tetrahydrocannibinol says: Feb 19, 2010 2:28 PM

Why does Pendergast keep getting job offers? Every defense he coached in the NFL gave up 400+ points a season.

  23. robrocker says: Feb 19, 2010 2:30 PM

The Cal defensive coordinator who left to Boise was essentially pushed out.
Fans were calling for his head.

  24. City_Native says: Feb 19, 2010 2:31 PM

    @ignoringthehaters
Only retaliation for all the comments from Raider fans on Niners posts. The Niners are not a good team, but far from the laughing stock that the Raiders are. The funny thing is that your rip on the Niners is a coach pulling down pants? Wow, good one.Our insults on the Raiders are endless.

Well if the Raiders suck, I’m not sure what to call the 5 teams that finished worse than them and the 2 other teams with same record.

  26. snnyjcbs says: Feb 19, 2010 2:46 PM

Lets face it, this guy has been falling faster than a flushed turd. From being dumped by AZ and KC as a DC to going back to a secondary coach?
Was a great hire by the Raiders but you cannot blame the guy as much as he has moved around to want to settle in as a DC in College.
As to all the Hater punk fans of other teams that are so bitter from all the years of taking it up the $%^, get a life. And to all the 49er Fans, I would start to try and be a little nicer. Considering you will soon be making the trip across the Bridge to watch your team play in Oakland lol.
I know you come from the land of light in the sandles but lets stop with all the dropping of the pants talk shall we.

  28. dogma1 says: Feb 19, 2010 2:47 PM

From db coach to dc good for him. This happens all the time but since it’s the raiders it’s s bigger story.

  29. mwcarolina says: Feb 19, 2010 3:14 PM

are the Raiders that bad that a good coordinator goes there then leaves quicker than he stayed? That is just weird, my guess is that Pendergast worried he would be unemployed again next year if Tom Cable gets fired.

Why do 49ers fans hate the Raiders? Both teams are storied franchises with multiple Super Bowl wins. They are in entirely different conferences. If anything, both should support the other…
I am a die-hard Raiders fan, however, I have a ton of respect for the 49ers….

who cares>>>>(I guess niners fans do)….i feel sorry for cal, losing out to the wac conference. Can’t blame Pendergrast for want to be a d-coord, instead of a position coach…makes sense for him……raiders would be better off with a younger guy…they should talk to eric allen.

  35. mpoles says: Feb 19, 2010 5:31 PM

He wasn’t really even a position coach at the Raiders since Lionel Washington is, as far as I’m aware, still the defensive backfield coach.

Compared to the perennial preseason Super Bowl champs, who roll over and choke when the going gets tough, the Raiders are an elite team.

Let’s see, a newly hired coach takes the first chance he gets to bail out of sputtering, rust bucket that is the Raiders’ organization and we get the expectable “sour grapes” comments from the Nation. Such a shock.
We all knew that Al couldn’t draft, couldn’t sign effective FA’s, couldn’t figure out how to promote an NFL team, and couldn’t hire a qualified Head Coach. Now we have proof that he can’t get even get assistant coaches to stick around long enough to learn where the breakroom is.
As to raiders177 regarding your question about the teams that finished with worse records this year, I believe the answer is “A new NFL record SEVEN straight seasons of DOUBLE DIGIT LOSSES”! Come on Al. Don’t quit now. Let’s go for EIGHT!

Seriously doubt it being CAL and not Oakland had anything to do with it. The guy was going to be a DB assistant. Now he is going to be a DC. It is more about the job itself instead of what organization it is. People being so fast to dump on a team when they don’t even think about what they read for more than one minute. There should be downloadable FQR charts for some of these posts.
