Browns, Cribbs still have plenty of work to do

NFL_cribbs.jpgIn response to the recent report from Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Browns and receiver Josh Cribbs could work out a new contract by the end of next week, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that, while such an outcome isn’t impossible, it’s not likely.

Talks are occurring, the source said, and progress has been made.  But more work needs to be done in order to bridge the gap.

That said, meetings will occur next week in Indianapolis in conjunction with the Scouting Combine, and a breakthrough is possible.

Currently, Cribbs reportedly wants $10 million in guaranteed money, while the Browns reportedly have offered $5 million in “likely” guarantees.  Per the source, the Browns are not yet at $5 million.

So stay tuned.

    Pay da man

Are they serious? A guy contributes like this and they’re splitting hairs over “only” $5-$10m in guaranteed money? This is why the NFL needs a rookie salary slot system. This man has ALREADY performed pay him. And don’t give all that big money to guys who’ve never even come close to doing what this guy has done. Pay those that have performed and incentivize those that have potential. This isn’t brain surgery.

The kid is NOT a legitimate wide receiver and to be paid as one is ludicrous. He’s a punt/kick returner and should be compensated as such!

The redskins should trade portis and 5 Mil for cribbs.

Is it just me or has Josh Cribbs gained about 35 pounds since this picture was taken?

Job #1 is go find a quarterback.

This is a re-curring story. Cribbs is about to get…Browns close to new…blah. Obvious agent spin but a liitle over-used. The Browns see through it but it screws with the Browns fans.

Looking at that picture raises one question…
When did Cribbs convert to offensive lineman?

    Just pay the man, wtf?

  10. Quagmire says: Feb 21, 2010 6:55 AM

He returns kicks, good at it…but he’s just a special teams player.
Only the Raiders go WAY overboard on paying special teams players.

10 mil for a punt returner? Cmon Josh, be real and dont forget YOU signed that original contract! And dont forget YOU are just a punt returner and wild cat specialist responsible for only a handful of plays.
long term high paying contract, does anyone remember that guy from chicago? You know that NFL record setting punt returner they gave all that jack to? Whats his name? I think hes still trying to make an impact at wr. Whats his name anyway? Holmgren is smarter than that!!

  12. The Polish Rifle says: Feb 21, 2010 8:39 AM

Holmgren didn’t pay Desmond Howard after tearing up the 1996 season en route to a Super Bowl MVP & my guess is he won’t for Mr Joshua Cribbs unless the price is right.
I think he is just trying to talk up Cribbs in hopes of some sap team overpaying in a trade for him. I still think he gets traded or a pay raise that he won’t be even close to what he was expecting. If they do sign him, it WILL BE HEAVY in incentives.
So, Joshua, hope you got some more of those awesome returns in you for next year along with some nasty wild cat runs too, because you’re going to have to produce to make that paper, playa.

Que the “pay da man” idiots…

  14. johnnydom says: Feb 21, 2010 10:57 AM

Why doesn’t anyone mention that his agents want to get paid. He is under contract and when the team has huge holes he is worried about Me. Typical. Don’t pay da man. Find a QB and pay that man not a kickreturner.

  15. Gabrielsdad237 says: Feb 21, 2010 11:33 AM

Hell Cribbs is not even the fifth best WR on his team. This is just typical ESPN type garbage. He is an excellent KR/PR, but that does not translate into top level WR money.

  16. trickbunny says: Feb 21, 2010 12:14 PM

…RUNNING BACK. If you don’t think Cribbs is a legit running back, I guess a 6 ypc average is not RB-worthy in your eyes.
So anyway, forget about the fact that there might be a “WR” designation after his name on the roster. It was a short experiment and he wasn’t even really used that much at that position. You are 10 x as likely to see him either run the ball or even throw it than catch it.
So is the deal he wants fitting for the best KR of all time (hey, records are records)/running back/wildcat QB?
    Sure.

  17. Quagmire says: Feb 21, 2010 3:57 PM

    8 TD’s in 265 KR’s
    2 TD’s in 103 PR’s
    2 TD’s in 36 Rec
    That’s 5 seasons…average of just over 2 TD’s per.
Just because Deion says “pay the man” doesn’t make Cribbs worth what he wants.

  18. Coyle says: Feb 21, 2010 4:17 PM

All of you Cribbs naysayers need to go take a look at YouTube. Just search “Cribbs” and you will see what a complete foot ball player he is. He runs, he receives, he passes, he blocks, he tackles and he makes touchdowns. Go look at the film. Cribbs does it all. Go look and shut your mouth.

  19. Adam-Chris Scheftersen says: Feb 21, 2010 6:17 PM

Running back with a 6 ypc average? 73 guys had more carries than Cribbs last season. Cribbs averaged less than 3.5 carries per game. He’s a returner. Yes, he’s versatile. But he’s not special. This isn’t Marshall Faulk.

    ==========================================
Dude does it all for the Browns, he’s consistently giving them great field position.
It’s not his fault the offense doesn’t know what to do with the ball.
    Cue the clueless idiots.
