Panthers will let Peppers walk

NFL_peppers_usa.jpgAs expected, the Carolina Panthers have decided not to apply the franchise tag to defensive end Julius Peppers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

An announcement is expected Tuesday.

And so Peppers, who was tagged by the Panthers in 2009, will head to free agency on March 5.

Schefter characterizes Peppers as one of the highest-profile free agents since Reggie White in the last season without a salary cap, and we agree.  But Peppers is not, hasn’t been, and never will be Reggie White.  Peppers has the ability to be dominant, but he disappears too often, and for too long.

Still, even with the flaws, he’s the biggest name to hit the free-agent market in 2010, and someone will be plunking down a big pile of money for him.  Whether he has a deal by daybreak on Day One of the signing period or whether he has to hear “you want more money than we can or will pay” a few times remains to be seen.

Peppers to Baltimore would be INSANE…and I can’t even stand the Ravens.

  2. DoomsDayD75 says: Feb 22, 2010 11:28 PM

I’m sure the Redskins already have his agent on the line.

  3. coach2be says: Feb 22, 2010 11:30 PM

Welcome to Baltimore!! He’s gonna be a Raven soon!

  4. Nick says: Feb 22, 2010 11:31 PM

Eagles need to get this guy. Even if he does take some plays off you still need to put two guys on him. With him on one side, and Cole on the other, that is just scary.

    I bid $1, Drew!

I wonder if the Redskins are going to pay him more or less than Haynesworth.

  8. Panther_Fan says: Feb 23, 2010 12:13 AM

Hate to see him go, but he isn’t worth the money it would take to keep him.

  9. BenRapistberger says: Feb 23, 2010 12:16 AM

Hey, does Peppers disappear sometimes? I think I heard you say that once or twice before.

  10. druid1 says: Feb 23, 2010 12:42 AM

oh well what can you do? Wants to play on a winner and carolina their front office is a mess just look at how they did their coaches the past two years

No surprise here, coming from the poorest owner in the NFL-Jerry Richardson.
If it weren’t for the Panthers (and their PSL owners) Richardson would be drowing in the Hardee’s debt he incuured.

  12. Daunte Culpepper says: Feb 23, 2010 1:24 AM

Sounds like we have a new claim to the title of #2 free agent this year. Becoming the top free agent this year would be a Daunt-ing task though!
P.S. Love what you’ve done with the site Florio. Lookin’ good. Roll on!

Calling Jerry Jones….. Spend huge, D-Ware’s sack total tripples by default.

  16. brownsfn says: Feb 23, 2010 6:16 AM

he is not worth the money he is going to get in free agency…anybody except dan snyder can see that…

what i wonder that these type of GMs still have a job!!!
last season they probalby could have gotten a 1st or 2nd for him…now they get nothing!!!
thats what i call sarah palin smart

he’ll sign with the Pats like he wanted too last season and will replace Thomas.

  19. TheDPR says: Feb 23, 2010 7:58 AM

He plays well just often enough to avoid being considered a bust.
    Barely.
Why anyone would pay a one-dimensional, part-time-effort player like him big money is beyond me. He’s a big-play guy a couple times a year and other than that he’s just a guy.
Maybe a new team can get more out of him.

  20. francois.nc says: Feb 23, 2010 7:58 AM

I don’t believe any of the top 8 teams from the playoffs will be able to sign him if I am correct. Thanks to the current cba. So that leaves out the Ravens and Cowboys, sorry guys.

  21. promin1 says: Feb 23, 2010 8:29 AM

I hope he does go to Philthy Philly so he can be the next Jevon Kearse.

  22. rubberneck says: Feb 23, 2010 8:29 AM

I’m sorry, but Drew Brees has surpassed Reggie White has the biggest free agent to be let go…. You can’t qualify a defensive lineman as a bigger impact that a hall of fame quarterback.

  23. Catamount says: Feb 23, 2010 8:38 AM

Peppers might have a good first year of the contract, but after he gets adjusted, you will watch games and wonder afterwards if he played. I saw reserve ROT shut him down with no help. He will run across a weak sister and get 2-3 sacks a few times during the season, but rarely when they matter. Heck, many of sacks he got when someone else pressured the QB right at him. He is decent most of the time, great on occasion, and nowhere to be seen the rest. Most of you have seen his highlights and nothing more.

  24. Duck Fallas says: Feb 23, 2010 8:39 AM

    Who’s smart?
No team would part with a 1st or 2nd rounder straight up, then have to pay the man franchise QB money on top of that. He’s good, but no $15-20M good. Especially when you only get 10-12 full effort games out of him, and that will probably decline once he gets paid.

  25. DieHardSkinsFan21 says: Feb 23, 2010 8:40 AM

I love all the hating on Danny boy Snyder. Which is warranted, however, if half you idiots actually looked, listened and or paid half the attention you should to America’s real team (THE WASHINGTON REDKSINS!!!!) then you would see that Danny boy doesn’t have free reign anymore.
Save your comments until after March 5th. If we get him great, but I would bet that we aren’t going to overspend to get him. That ship has sailed. Although if we do get him romo the homo is going to be spending a TON of time on his back, and that isn’t implying that his boyfriend and him are going to be getting it on. I mean that he will be taking a TON of sacks.
All you haters out there can just go to hell.

  26. sammm says: Feb 23, 2010 8:42 AM

Jerry Jones will pay him. Lots of seats to put butts in at the new palace.

  27. Chapnasty2 says: Feb 23, 2010 8:49 AM

I think his lack of motivation was triggered by sitting on the bench and watching old man Delhomme heave 5 picks a game. Why try if your QB sucks that badly and is going to throw away your hard work. If he is on a contender he will be a beast.

That is the funniest statement I have heard so far today. When did Drew Brees get in the Hall of Fame?

  29. tatum32 says: Feb 23, 2010 9:33 AM

Patriots…. and his fate will be just like Randy Moss, Fred Taylor and Junior Seau….ringless.
The more the Pats spend the worse they’ll get – they’re best when they get interchangeable parts and veterans rather than high FA’s

  30. runtheballandy says: Feb 23, 2010 9:37 AM

Attn Please dimwitted Cowboy fans. You will NOT be able to sign Peppers. I wont bother explaining why, if you dont know, you wont understand anyway. Trust me, neither Dallas, nor the other 7 teams who were in the divisional round this year will be able to sign him..

  32. thehoodedone says: Feb 23, 2010 9:51 AM

A bust?!? The man has 81 sacks in 8 years. This is nothing but a smear campaign. Just like the one perpetrated against Moss 3 years ago.

  33. clavette says: Feb 23, 2010 10:25 AM

Lol you redskins fans crack me up. U signed haynesworthless last year and said the east better watch out. Well that worked out well for you this past year. I look forward to jason campbell and your detroit lions like offensive line getting dominated yet again this year, with or without peppers

You’re not too familiar with the rules regarding free agents and the final eight teams in the playoffs, are you?

  36. coach2be says: Feb 23, 2010 12:40 PM

Ravens can sign him now that he walked. The final four teams would have trouble with the cba..Ravens are one of the few teams he wanted to play for..so time will tell

That guy might not have been a governor, but he probably finishes the duration of a work assignment when he takes it. He probably also memorizes something when he wants to remember it instead of, you know, writing it on his hand like a 6th grader who’s cheating on a history test.

The “left” dosnt like it when the other side has a voice because its becoming increasingly more retarded and uneducated. They have hallow arguements and when opposed they start with the tourettes.; “socialism!” “teleprompter!” ” Why I choose to be an Independant.
Left can’t take criticism? Why is Bill Maher banned from ever appearing on any Fox “news”(opinion)show?
