Actually, that “moron” was me. I know off the top of my head that DUI is NOT a criminal offense in the states of New Jersey and New York. I don’t know if you have heard of them since they are fairly insignificant. Ironically though, they are the states in which many of the players of four NFL teams reside (Eagles, Giants, Jets, Bills). I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Also, I haven’t done a hillbilly head count but the smart money says there aren’t as many hillbillies in NY and NJ as there are in the former Confederate state of Virginia. Just my guess.

I agree 100% – suspend them for a year!
If you plead guilty in VA it’s 5 days in jail and a criminal charge for your 1st offense. 2nd offense is 10 days, and 3rd is 30 days – automatic – some moron said it’s just a misdemeanor traffic violation – that’s crazy! what hill billy state is that?
Hasn’t any of these guys heard of RED TOP CAB or YELLOW or call a F-N limo – I mean there’s not 1 player in the NFL that makes less than 200K right? Most of them make millions! and if you can’t afford a cab ride because the payments on your Lambo are too much, they should throw your a$$ in jail too!
I just look at it like this, if I’m drunk, $30 cab ride is a lot less to pay than thousands in legal fees, court costs, fines and of course jail time. WTF that is the $hiiiit that pisses me off.
But yes they should suspend them for a year – automatically! if you plead guilty, your done. Same thing with a gun charge – unregistered gun charge, and you plead guilty – done for the year. Let somebody who’s paying attention take their place.

I think most NFL teams have more players with legal troubles than the Dolphins, how are the team of bad boys? Joey Porter is gone and I couldn’t be happier. Just watch Wake next season, I don’t care if he played in the CFL he is a nightmare for QB’s.
Starks, McDaniels and Will Allen – who else had legal run ins? Sadly only 3 is quite good for an NFL team.

The DUI was before last years playoff game against the Steelers, not this years game against the Jets.
I don’t think it would be called a “protracted legal battle” if it was something that happended a month ago.

Not to defend Stallworth cuz what he did and what Jackson did are inexcusable crimes, but Mr. Reyes died because he stepped in front of a moving car not because Stallworth was under the influence.
You can dispute his awareness and reflexes but the facts are what they are.
Year suspension is from the league is a bit much IMO. If the prosecutors were able to get mandatory jail time for even first offenders (week or so) maybe that would deter some of these DUI crimes. But until there is a better punishment most will continue to take the risk IMO.
4-6 games maybe?

I still think it is a travesty that Stallworth served less than a month for killing someone while drunk. Here in Washington he would have served at least three years, and that’s if he didn’t have any kind of record. The leeway given to the privileged in some states is ridculous and the disparity between states on punishment is also a joke.
Come on. Bring a pistol in a nightclub and shoot yourself in the leg? Two years in New York.
Kill someone while driving drunk? 24 days in Miami.

I say it may be too late to suspend him the whole season since there have been players that have DUI’s that have not been suspended the whole season but I say they should make a rule from now on to suspend for DUI’s for the whole season since you can’t feel sorry for these guys who have it all and decide they can’t control themselves with something that is pure common sense. If they know how strict the rule is then they will be less likely to make such a bad decision which means maybe we will have a couple less players out there drunk driving.

A full year would be justified, because there is zero reason for these guys to drive drunk.
They have the money to call a cab, limo, wrecker, or even the team security to set something up for them.

Who cares, to many laws and regulations these days. In the past, it would be a non issue. He’s a great player and needs some help. Send him to alcohol rehab or something. Suspend him 4 games but not the whole season.

Oh Jesus. Get off your horse Florio. A one year suspension for a DUI? Give me a break. I hate when you lawyers get up on your soapbox and try to wag your finger as if you are the law. No – you PRACTICE law, and if you aren’t getting DUI’s yourselves (I know a few) you are trying to get drunk drivers off. So please, spare us. I know what happened with Stallworth was terrible and no one should drink and drive, but a year suspension for what is in many states only a traffic violation?! C’mon man. Do you suggest year-long suspensions for speeding or careless driving tickets? They endanger life just as well. Think about it.

Then again, given that the Dolphins seem to be on track to become the new poster boys of NFL bad behavior, maybe the Chargers will have to use the franchise tag on Jackson to keep the Fins from signing him to an offer sheet.
