Chiefs re-sign Matt Gutierrez, Kolby Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs had 11 players who were due to become restricted free agents.

Two will remain under contract after March 5.

The team has announced that running back Kolby Smith and quarterback Matt Gutierrez have been re-signed.

Smith, a fifth-round pick in 2007, started six games as a rookie and three in 2008.  Last year, injuries limited him to only four games.

Gutierrez arrived via waivers from the Patriots in 2008.

The Chiefs also released guard Mike Goff, a 12-year veteran who started seven games for the Chiefs in 2009.

The deadline for tendering offers to the team’s other nine restricted free agents is March 4.  Alternatively, the Chiefs can sign one, more, or all of them to new deals — as they did with Smith and Gutierrez.

Do you think he has a little brother named Jack? Jack Goff

  2. Come on Pioli!!! Why are you resigning a never was for your 3rd stringer, and a 5th round pick that hasn’t done much since he was drafted. Granted he had a few bright moments, but he is injury prone. There are going to be some good free agent RB’s out there, or draft one. Why are we keeping Herm the worm’s trash around?? You need someone to compliment J. Charles, and Kolby Smith is not the answer.

  3. Kolby Smith is a baller when healthy! He really is a very good RB. This is a solid move; Kolby Smith is the man!

  4. Wow, Spring Training is here and I have to think about the Royals being an embarrassment on the field. I wish I could look past the 2010 Royals and concentrate on the Chiefs, but it looks like they will be the same sub par team we have had to deal with since Larry took his diaper off. Boy, I wish I could morph Dick Vermeil’s offensive teams with Marty Schottenheimer’s Defensive teams and enjoy a nice run. KC needs a winner(No I did not say winter, WINNER).

I could compliment him. Jamaal, killer boots, man! Who’s going to complement him in the backfield?
