Combine rumor: Dolphins want Dansby

NFL_dansby_250.jpgAs folks begin to arrive in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine (Rosenthal already is there, looking for someone who’s old enough to buy him some malt duck), the rumors already are rumbling.

Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offers up a juicy one.  He says, via Twitter, that the word on the street is that the Dolphins “will pay” linebacker Karlos Dansby.

Coincidentally, the Dolphins were one of the teams listed by Dansby on a four-franchise wish list, before claiming that he has no wish list.

The Cardinals still have exclusive negotiating rights with Dansby until he hits the market at midnight on March 5, but the tampering begins to unfold with a vengeance during the NFL convention that unfolds in and around the Scouting Combine.  It’s so rampant that the league has considered changing the rules to permit players to talk with suitors from the middle of February to the launch of free agency.

The Cardinals also could choose to use the franchise tag on Dansby for a third straight year.  To do so, however, would require the Cardinals to offer Dansby a one-year contract worth $16.4 million — the quarterback franchise number.

What happens if the Cardinals use the transition tag on Dansby?

  2. MyronB says: Feb 24, 2010 10:12 PM

    Noooooo!
The Dolphins must draft Rolando McClain so the Giants can’t get him! Don’t go after Dansby, Tuna, you want McClain!

  3. MiamiMan90 says: Feb 24, 2010 10:13 PM

I would love to see Dansby, and either Rolle or Boldin in a Dolphins uniform come next season. That would be a successful FA period in my books.

    16.4 Million? Holy smokes!

Dansby is as good as gone.

    We need Dansby and Boldin…

The Raiders sold out the first game of the season vs. San Diego. Monday Night Football was sold out in Oaktown. The other 7games werent as full simply because of the performance of the QB play. Raidernation is still there waiting for the Comeback but wont stick around much if Russell continues to throw games away.
2008 Opener agains Denver was also sold out.. I was there.

Can the Giants PLEASE grab this Dansby guy?? They’ve been lacking in the LB corps, this would be a perfect edition.

  9. Tr3pidation says: Feb 24, 2010 11:15 PM

@Draft King then the Cardinals get to see what his market value is. Let’s say the Phins give him a contract for 5 years 25 millions, the Cardinals can match it and he’d be their player, or they can refuse to match and he’d be a Dolphin.
That’s the basic run down of it, not including poison pills. But being a Seahawks fan, I’m well versed in what can happen there :p

So, does this open the door to use the pick on Kindle? Graham? Bryant? Dunlap? Spiller!?
Should be interesting, I can see the Fins being pretty active in trying to trade. Maybe going after Marshall, Boldin, more picks…?

I am a Packer fan. Take my word for it Bedard knows nothing.

bedard used to write for the palm beach post which makes you wonder whether he still has a source inside the fins organization.

You guys all hot to have your team sign Dansby need to take a good hard look at his stats, and number of pro bowl appearances. He’s a good linebacker, no doubt about it. But he’s not the elite player that he thinks he is, and the numbers tell the clear story.
Whoever pays him 8 figures is going to live to regret it, trust me. He’ll go downhill when he gets the big payday, you can bank on it.

Where does talking about the Raiders selling out home openers come into play with Dansby?
    Come on son!

    WTF
    Why is this post here?
The Raiders were one of the lowest in attendance last year, at the bottom.

Greg needs to spend less time on the street.

  17. Ryan says: Feb 25, 2010 12:38 AM

tr3pidation, you are describing the situation if he were a restricted free agent. He isnt. He is a free agent where anyone is free to sign him and the cardinals dont get the opportunity to try and match it.

  18. Stone says: Feb 25, 2010 2:09 AM

They should franchise him and then trade him right after that. If Dansby’s agent can tamper, then the Cardinals should be able to gather the same information and determine if the risk of franchising him would be offset by a draft pick. Hell, I’d even take a 5th rounder just to get something. Big dollar gamble though.

  19. Crowder911 says: Feb 25, 2010 3:26 AM

    @6250claimer
Dansby is a playmaker and he is doing it for years now.
for a 3-4 ILB the NT and DLine is crucial.
The Cardinals dont have an elite, or even an average DLine, they have Dockett, …. they have Dockett and….. well they have Dockett thats it.
the Dolphins DLine (besides the NT problem) is one of the most physical in the NFL. Dansby will be free to fly around. If he wears acqua and orange, he will be in the probowl within 2 years.
for the fins it makes totally sense to get him, the J-E-S-T-S overpaid to get a less talented Maggie um Bart Scott. the same money should get us Dansby. Crowder is a beast vs the Run, Dansby is good in coverage, blitzing and sideline to sideline which should make our ILB pos from a weakness to a strength.
    DRAFT
trade down and get NT Dan Williams
McClaine, no thx…. I would prefer Sean Wheaterspoon if operation Tuna get Dansby fails

  20. Pthingholm says: Feb 25, 2010 6:58 AM

Hear that 6250. Whenever a players says he would like to play in a “big market” there’s going to be problems.
I really like him, but these multifranchised players are just commanding way too much money.

  21. dolfanSS says: Feb 25, 2010 8:49 AM

You guys just gettng this now? This has been common knowledge on fins fan sites for weeks.

  22. realitypolice says: Feb 25, 2010 9:05 AM

    I love tampering

  23. overkil2 says: Feb 25, 2010 9:24 AM

@6250claimer – No doubt that when someone gets that huge contract there is always a chance that they pack it in, but he’s better than any of our LBs at the moment.
I wouldn’t break the bank for him, but if you can get him, then it gives you flexibility on what you can do with that #12 pick since you’d have addressed the LB situation. All that said, if you were to still draft McClain, that would be the making of a solid LB corp with the potential of being great if you added a few more pieces to it.

  24. jj jones says: Feb 25, 2010 9:53 AM

    The Cardinals will never learn.

  25. finsbooyah says: Feb 25, 2010 10:20 AM

Mike_in_Texas, what the hell are you talking about???
I think the Dolphins NEED Dansby. ILB is a huge liability on our defense and unlike other positions (OLB, NT, FS), it is not deep in the draft.
Listen, I’m not claiming to be an expert or a scout, but this time of year I spend alot (ok, actually wayyyy too much) time in work watching videos of potential draft picks. I’ve watched a ton of McClain (not to mention many of his Alabama games over the years) and EVERYBODY seems to think this guy is special, but I just don’t see it. Maybe I’m missing something. He never seems to be out of position and he is good in coverage. He is also, by all accounts a very smart/high character guy. But he also never seems to deliver the big hit, he misses alot of tackles and rarely seems to be the first one to reach the ball carrier, he is not exceptionally fast, and isn’t the greatest blitzer.
McClain actually reminds me alot of Channing Crowder when I watch him play. He looks like he’ll be an above average player, but he certainly doesn’t look like someone I would spend the 12th overall pick on.

    what do you mean
    “cards will never learn”
    whats your oppinion on Dansby?
i only watch the prime time games of the cards + playoffs etc and every time i watch Dansby makes impact plays.

  28. Adam says: Feb 25, 2010 9:13 PM

seems like the Giants and Dolphins will be posturing for McClain and/or Dansby. Miami’s only two spots above NY. If Miami signs Dansby, it might force NY to trade up or something.
Should be interesting. Or not. Go giants.

  29. jdcowboy says: Feb 25, 2010 9:18 PM

just looked it up he may not have been in the probowl but check out these stats.

    555 total tackles, 442 solo, 25.5 sacks, 29 pass deflected, 10 int, 2td’s
    from the Cardinals website
