Kraft responds to Moss' comments that Pats "don't really pay"

nfl_moss.jpgOn Wednesday, Patriots owner Bob Kraft said that he’s close to a new deal with defensive tackle Vince Wilfork.  Kraft also was asked for the first time about recent comments from receiver Randy Moss, who said that the Patriots “don’t really pay.”

“OK, let’s look at [Moss’] situation,” Kraft said at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis, according to Tom Curran of Comcast Sports Net New England.  “In the first two years he made over $20 million.  But I think the context . . . look in any of the family businesses we don’t just go out and spend money and always try to be the highest spender.  We want to win in everything we do.  Looking collectively on an aggregate basis, we spend to be competitive.  But any of your readership that has run a business knows that just spending wildly doesn’t mean you’re doing the right thing.  You want to spend wisely, you want to spend with the right people.”

Kraft then became blunt — and in his candor he indirectly corrected anyone who thinks that the Colts won the most total games of the last decade, unless playoff games suddenly don’t count.

“This is immodest to say but over the last 10 years no football team won more football games than the New England Patriots so I guess we’re doing OK,” Kraft said.  “I know we’ve committed enough capital to make us competitive and we want to spend it wisely.  We went what, 10 years, four Super Bowls.  We won more games than anyone so we must be doing something a little right. Just because you spend a lot of money on players doesn’t mean you’re going to win.  Since the turn of the century we’ve won more games and more championships than 31 other teams.  People on the outside can say what they want.”

He’s got the right attitude, but it’s someone on the inside who has recently criticized the team’s approach.  Though Kraft said he didn’t interpret Moss’ comments as “anti-Patriot,” we still think that Randy’s overriding point is simple:  “Provide me with a contract that extends beyond 2010, or let me play for someone who will.”

Here’s that good Ol’ Randy Moss we knew before. Took awhile for him to return to his roots, but he’s showing his “other side” the Pats managed to supress for so long.

Kraft is right…..The Pats do spend money, but it is used wisely. Moss just wants his $$$, and has every right to try to get it. But that doesn’t mean he will….
Bottom line: Moss should just STFU, play out this contract and if he doesn’t get Franchised, sign with the highest bidder…. Cuz if Kraft and Co. wont pay Seymour, there is no way Moss is getting payed what he thinks he should…..

  5. Wick says: Feb 24, 2010 6:14 PM

@ Florio who closed with: “we still think that Randy’s overriding point is simple: “Provide me with a contract that extends beyond 2010, or let me play for someone who will.”
Well, it goes without saying that Randy wants more money, and will optimize his options. That’s what Randy is about. $$$$$
But beyond that — Moss tries to slam the Patriot brass as cheap, not just as relates to Moss himself, but in a general across-the-board sense.
How ridiculous is that? Kraft was exactly right with every comment he made in rebuttal.
It’s why players like Tom Brady play for hardware — and Randy Moss plays for bling, takes plays off, quits on his coaches, fans and worst of all, his teammates. Brady has 3 rings. Moss has zippo.
Moss is starting to show his carcinogenic properties – which will likely not be too appreciated in a Team First locker room, like New England has. Looks like the Patriots are finally dealing with someone who thinks he’s above the team leaders, led above all by the ever-tactful Brady.

  6. SprintPhoneFTW says: Feb 24, 2010 6:16 PM

That’s the thing about Super Bowls. Once you have them, you can basically tattoo the letters STFU on your forehead and be right 100% of the time.

    I think not.

  10. FireJerryJones says: Feb 24, 2010 6:19 PM

What’s the problem? They’re paying a 33 year old guy $9 million to catch passes from Brady. Doesn’t sound like lunch pail money.
KC wouldn’t be a bad place for Moss to land in 2011.
Brady’s gonna get paid this year. Adalius Thomas wasn’t worth the $35 million they threw at him. Assante Samuel is not worth $57 million Philly threw away. Wilfork’s worth the $7.5 million as a run stuffer. They still can’t run the ball or rush the passer. Patriots seem to get rid of guys that are past their prime… Deion Branch, David Patten, David Givens…

  11. downwithdansnyder says: Feb 24, 2010 6:19 PM

Umm, I’d expect you to read into this. “People on the outside can say what they want.”
I think that’s a shot over the bow that Moss could be “on the outside”. Kraft is not going to take Moss’s public crap.

  13. Packers29 says: Feb 24, 2010 6:24 PM

What was the question that prompted Moss to make that comment? I feel like we are not getting the whole story, and you are trying to paint a picture that is distorted, for your own benefit.
Also, stop speculating. You put words in Randy’s mouth— he never said “Provide me with a contract that extends beyond 2010, or let me play for someone who will.”
If you’re going to distort the story, at least don’t quote phrases that were never said.

  14. JoeSixPack says: Feb 24, 2010 6:28 PM

As a Patsfan I didn’t take Moss’s comments personally – but I understand why Kraft needs to respond.
Randy Moss knows that the Patriots won’t overpay. Other teams will. Since he wants to be overpaid he correctly stated that he’s unlikely to be back.
But ultimately, Moss got his $27 million contract and will get his next overpaid contract BECAUSE of the Patriots – not in spite of them.
How much does he or anyone else think he’d be getting paid right now if he spent 2007 on the Raiders? Not $9 million a season, that’s for sure.
Other players are in the same boat. Deion Branch was overpaid by the Seahawks BECAUSE he played for the Patriots, not in spite of them. It’s not Bob Kraft’s fault that other teams are stupid enough to waste money like that.
The players might not all understand this – but thier agents certainly do.

  15. rjgreen3 says: Feb 24, 2010 6:28 PM

bye bye Randy……….. Brady won’t stand for your comments!

  16. Bee_Arthur says: Feb 24, 2010 6:29 PM

([Kraft later added to his Moss comments] I didn’t interpret what he said as anti-Patriot. He’s a smart businessman too. He’s getting himself positioned too.)
Kraft could give two sh!ts less what Randy said.
Here’s the thing I think Randy is forgetting – Lets say he has another good year 70+ catches, 1200+ yards, 10+ TD’s and he becomes an UR Free Agent. *The Patriots will just franchise him like they do to everyone else.
If they franchise him after he plays out this contract and don’t offer him another decent contract, I think you would have an all out Randown if they expected him to play under the one year tender.

  18. Citizen Strange says: Feb 24, 2010 6:31 PM

Kraft gave the most generic answer possible. Be smart instead of stupid.
But the truth is that the Patriot’s success is 100% due to accidentally drafting future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady in the sixth round…well, that and the cheating.
The nanosecond that Brady retires the Pats will go back to being mediocre and Kraft’s business model and Belichick’s coaching brilliance and will get them back to being the less than mediocre below .500 team that they were before Brady came on the scene.

  19. pfii63 says: Feb 24, 2010 6:31 PM

Kraft is spot on, and it’s nice to see him speak up. Moss has done very well by the Patriots. While Moss’ comments accurately reflect his declining value to the Patriots — that is not a personal issue.
The Pats pay the players they value, but have always emphasized a strong middle class… they would rather have five guys making $1 million than one guy making $5 million. And it, not videotape, has been the instrument of their success.

  20. Ross'sSweetMinus says: Feb 24, 2010 6:34 PM

Citizen Strange is right. The Pats get wayyy too much credit for being such a well-run organization. It’s ALL Brady…and NE hardly liked him when they drafted him. If every team didn’t pass on Brady 5 times each in the draft or if Drew Bledsoe didn’t get injured the Pats wouldn’t be where they are today.
But that did happen…in comes Brady…he wins 3 super bowls…and they are the greatest organization eva? Gimme a break.

  27. BernardPollardIsAnAss says: Feb 24, 2010 7:12 PM

Of course he did not interpret Moss’s comments as anti-Patriot. They weren’t. In your haste to bash the Patriots yet again you decided to exclude the key parts of the statement by Moss which make it clear that he understands that he got “paid” by the Patriots and is not at all upset about his current situation. Anyone who does not realize by now that Moss says something every time he speaks that makes a great sound-bite when taken out of context has no business reporting on the NFL. The guy puts his foot in his mouth every time he opens it. This is not a big deal of course since everyone who has a clue knows it, unless some hater jackass just has to show his ignorance and take tings out of context to try to perpetuate the myth of Randy being perpetually disgruntled. Keep shoveling Florio. There are plenty of below average intelligence folk reading your site that will eat it up. Hmmm… who is a better business man, Kraft or Moss? That’s a tough one.

  28. JimmySmith says: Feb 24, 2010 7:13 PM

Matt Walsh was well paid for turning over the video tape. Kraft has shown he will pay for performance or a cover up, what ever it takes to cheat your way to a Superbowl.

  29. Nuckinfutz says: Feb 24, 2010 7:14 PM

If you read Moss’s comments in their entirety, he really says nothing wrong or derogatory.
He simply says that it’s a business, and he appreciates everything that the Patriots have done for him and his family.
People will twist it to stir up shit, and advance their own agenda. That’s why Moss is smart when he usually doesn’t speak to the media, and he probably wishes that he hadn’t done it this time either.

  30. TheWizard says: Feb 24, 2010 7:17 PM

Moss is the best wide receiver that has ever worn a Patriots uniform. He didn’t use the word cheap, the Patriot fans did. The Pats do just fine the way they run things now. But the only reason they are who they are is because of Tom Brady. If Tom was never there Bill would have been fired by now. Without Brady this franchise would have no rings and few if any playoff appearances. You can have a good year now and then or pull a Dilfer for a year but in the long run the Quarterback is the person that will win games for you. No Brady/Pats Suck, No Manning/Indy Blows, No Brees/No SB, No Favre/One and Done. No Rogers/Packer Fans Drink More Alcohol, if thats possible.

I’m not a Pats fan, but that sums up my thoughts when I first heard Moss’s comments. Although he’s tremendously talented, he was fortunate to land with a team that was willing to work with him despite his baggage. And he’ll leave the game with Super Bowl rings other great receivers like Cris Carter don’t have. If he’s ready to leave the Pats, fine. But don’t bad-mouth the team that made you–and paid you more than $20 mil for just your first two years.

The hard part to swallow is BB had the 18-1, undefeated season(Colts???) post spygate. They won thier division again….11-5 sans Brady…
and you fools think all this is a result of taping signals? BB will probably go down in history as one of the best HC’s of all time. Say cheese…..

  48. picspatriots says: Feb 24, 2010 8:50 PM

It truly is pathetic to hear these fools knock the Pats for their success. It’s pretty obvious that having Brady is huge, but that’s a requirement for any team it’s football, the QB is the most important position in the game. Take away Big Ben., Manning, Favre, Rivers, Romo, and your franchise takes a step back. So, any fools who thinks the Pats are screwed without Brady is only stating the obvious for not only NE, but every other team in the league. It would be my hope that there’s some intelligent conversation on this site, instead of all of this stupid shit that’s written ! Give me a break.

  50. prophet of the light says: Feb 24, 2010 9:11 PM

Rnady could have made way more than 20 million or so that he was paid as a Patriot. He came back because it was a competitive salary on a very good team.
It could be argued that the Patriots won’t be competitive in their offer next time, maybe, or that they won’t be very good (hopefully not!).
Otherwise, Randy Moss might not be back.

  51. 8man says: Feb 24, 2010 9:14 PM

Yeah. Brady plays a big part in their success. But few teams win without a franchise QB. Good thing they had two in 2008.
Oh, maybe it is the coach…
Further, Kraft has taken that team from nothing and molded it into one of the richest, if not the richest, team in the NFL. That stadium was paid for by him. Patriot Place was paid for by him. Remember where the dynasty started; in a rundown college stadium. That’s where Vinatierri hit that kick against the Rai-duhs. Now they play in a virtual Kingdom, surrounded by upscale restaurants, hotels and theaters. Actually, I think they added new turf this week. Sweet!
Finally, all of this “Patriots are done” talk is nothing more than angry fan boys sick of hearing about a successful team over and over again that just happens to not be theirs.
Someone said it, get three Super Bowl victorys and you can basically tattoo STFU on your head and point to it when some fool opens his mouth.
And cheating? Be serious. Can taping down, distance and what happened on the field from the sideline be that much more of an advantage than all the game tape that is afforded to teams? The real issue wasn’t what was taped, just where the camera was that was taping it. Look it up.

Moss wants to win a SB. He has also been quoted as saying that he wouldn’t mind returning to Minny to “finish what we started there”…and it’s no secret that Moss and BF want to play together. BF lobbied hard for Moss when he left Oakland and Moss said it would be a real privelege to play with BF……..I’m smellin’ the real story here, Moss wants to go back to Minny and even more so now that BF is there plus Minny does have a powerhouse of a team.

Lets count every game they won while cheating as half a game. So they won 1.5 Super Bowls, thus Steelers are the team of the decade.
In all reality though, what they are doing right is cheating. They had one great season since they cheated and have declined every year after that. I am not saying they would have lost all those games, I am saying that without a lot of talent on their team, cheating took them from good to great. Then they had great talent, and were great, lost the Super Bowl, and now are declining.

Raider B says: Tuck rule = Superbowls
Raiders fans are still crying about a loss from nearly a decade ago (over a rule the NFL has purposefully left unchanged ever since)
… the Patriots totally crushed the team’s Psyche along with the fans and they STILL aren’t over it.
    Awsome!

What’s interesting to me, is Bill Cowher, head coach of the Steelers (who probably of anybody should have the most beef over spygate) came out and said that it wasn’t a big deal.
Another interesting thing is, for a team taping defensive signals, from 2000-2006 they really weren’t that good offensively.
Did they do something they shouldn’t have done? Yes, and they were punished for it. But the way they were winning in 2003 and 2004 was pretty damn ugly. 17-16, 13-9, scores like that.
Then in 2007, they lose this “big advantage”, and proceed to wipe their ass with about 10 different teams. I think in their 18 wins, only 5 were by single digits.

NONE of the lame azz Pats fans here get laid, polish…unless it’s reaming each other’s bungholes. Par for the course for male fans who root for a team based in an area where they legalized gay marriage. LMFAO!!!!

We’ll see what happens without Moss. He’s a fantastic receiver, but he’ll be 34 in 2011. At that point, throwing money at him would be counter-intuitive.

*The Patriots will just franchise him like they do to everyone else.
The new CBA will not have a franchise tag or transition tag. that will be the first thing to get sliced out of the old contract. besides that, there’s no way they will want him back. he’s aging and he gets shut down too frequently. he also drops more passes than he used to.

Um didnt the Colts win the most games over the last 10 years?

Not if you count the playoffs.
I know, I know, Colts fans would prefer that we didn’t.

    So would Cowboys fans!!!

I love the “Pats don’t pay” idiots because it is not a subjective thing. All you need to do is look at the salary cap numbers to see if a team “pays”. Looks to me like the Pats are right in the middle of the rankings for cap space which means they are “paying.” They just don’t pay outrageous money for overrated players that don’t try on every play out there on the field.

“The Pats have what? 5 picks in the second round of what might be the deepest draft in years? This happened by accident?
    I think not.”
Actually, they have four pics in the first two rounds, but two of them are their own to begin with. You make it sound like they swindled their way to five extra picks with their elite mind trick skills…keep wishing.

Unfortunately, like cockroaches, they seem able to survive anything :-) Reading their posturing, I’m reminded that those who can do, and those who can’t posture on football blogs. Not many women are attracted to cockroaches.

    straight cash homey….
Look the Pats and the Redskins have proven that the star system doesn’t work. If Moss wants out let him go back to the 4-12 Bills….

  81. paranoidandroid says: Feb 26, 2010 6:25 PM

how sweet that would be! no moss to throw to, no running game…….brady would be mauled. look, if you think welker is going to carry the team then you are nuts. the beauty of moss is that he doesn’t have to get the ball to be effective because he draws double coverage more often than not. if moss goes, that deep threat is gone and brady won’t have a home run hitter anymore.
to quote jerrah jones, “did you like those superbowls? i hope you did, i hope you did very much!”

    The Wizztard,
Get a grip on yourself (no, I’m not talking about your solo sex life either). You aren’t anywhere near as intelligent as you pretend to be here and the only one that you are fooling in that regard is yourself.
