Dolphins G.M. Ireland defends Gibril Wilson

It sounds like Dolphins fans will have safety Gibril Wilson to kick around a little while longer.

Often scapegoated for Miami’s secondary problems last season, Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland came to the free agent acquisition’s defense Thursday.

“He’s playing a position with two young corners. A lot of things you would try to blame him for, whether it was the media or the fans, weren’t always his fault,” Ireland said.

There has been speculation that the Dolphins were leaning towards cutting Wilson, but Ireland appeared to put that discussion to rest.

“We have our evaluation of Gibril Wilson. We know what kind of player he’s capable of being,” Ireland said. “I think he’s going to be a very good player for the future. He was disappointed in his play last year. I think he can play better. We’ll just have to see. I think he will.”

This is another case of the uncapped season being a factor.

The Dolphins already gave Wilson his guaranteed money. They don’t have to worry about his cap figure.

Signing Wilson has been one of Ireland’s few big missteps and they may as well keep Wilson through training camp to see if he can turn things around.
