Four NFL players will spend a week visiting American troops in Southwest Asia this off-season as part of the NFL’s annual USO tour.
The league and the USO announced that 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, Texans defensive end Mario Williams, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and Browns left tackle Joe Thomas will participate in the week-long tour of American bases.
The NFL’s USO program started in 1966 with future Pro Football Hall of Famers Willie Davis, Frank Gifford, Sam Huff and Johnny Unitas visiting Vietnam. In March 2005, an NFL donation allowed the USO to open a center at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan named for Pat Tillman, the Cardinals safety who left the NFL behind to join the Army Rangers and was killed in Afghanistan.
Last year NFL players Jared Allen, Larry Fitzgerald, Will Witherspoon and Danny Clark visited troops in Iraq and Kuwait, and coaches Tom Coughlin, Bill Cowher, Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden and John Harbaugh made a separate trip to Iraq.
Nice to see something good for a change.
Maybe this type of action should be part of every players contract.
Give them a feel for the real world.
Vernon and Witten will probably be discussing their possible trade between the Chan Clan and Tank U
Why is Mario Williams going? His team hasn’t even made the playoffs since he’s been in the league. Vernon Davis? Isn’t that the guy who Singletary sent to the locker room once? Quite impresive.
I guess it is at least an upgrade from last year’s loudmouth Jared “I disappear in big games” Allen. The only knowledge he could provide that’s useful is during a firefight it’s best to lay low and let your teammates do all the work and keep running your mouth.
wow for someone whose name is “Ilovefoolsball” you sure as hell don’t kno shit about football
Vernon Davis put up the best numbers of his career this past season, and Mario Williams is a 2-time pro-bowler and the way his career is going he’s on his way to being a real elite player. u have absolutely no idea what your talkin about
WarrenMoonGOAT: Thanks for typing it before I did. “Ilovefoolsball” is obviously not paying attention his beloved foolsball. He is probably one of those cynics that cannot take any pleasure in a story unless it is negative.

Please sell your computer and never ever post again. Mario Williams is a two time pro bowler and Vernon Davis is a stud. Also I think it is great if any NFL player goes over and supports the troops esp. number 69. You gotta be a angry Packers fan. At the very least you are a very stupid person
Vernon Davis and 3 other NFL players? Maybe they’ll form a USO curling team. Couldn’t be any worse that the current US Olympic Men’s squad.
Where are all the Saint players
What the Champs are to busy to visit those who allow them to play a childs game?
As I recall very clearly the year the Giants won it all they had two players go to the Middle East and visit our brave young men and women.
The Saints needed to get there heads out of there asses and go over kiss the feet of those real heros.
So, I’m just wondering…
All the people who find time to talk mess about the Cowboys, do you have anything to say about the best overall tight end in the league doing this?
Even if you HATE the Cowboys, you must admit Witten is an amazing player, a good man, and a role model.
Me, I love the Cowboys, and LOVE seeing my favorite player taking time out to visit our troops.
Bless Big Witt and all the others who take their time to make a difference.
