Joey Porter's play, not his mouth, is his biggest problem

Earlier this month, we compared Joey Porter’s verbal grenades towards the Dolphins to a guy that started talking trash about his girlfriend after he got dumped.

Porter knew he was on the way out, so he decided to make it look like it he forced his way out because he was unhappy.

Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland confirmed at the NFL Scouting Combine Thursday that Porter’s mouth had nothing to do with the release.  It was all because of Porter’s play on the field.  (The league invalidated the move, but he’ll be released after March 5.)

The admission by Ireland illustrates how tough it will be for Porter to get a good contract.  Teams won’t want to deal with the headaches he brings when his performance is clearly in decline.

Did porter make one meaningful sack last year?

    Dear Joey,
This just isn’t working out. You’re not the man you used to be. I’ve found someone else. His name is Karlos. He’s a real man.
    Love Fergie

Couldn’t happen to a nizero guy!
As Archie Bunker once told the meathead to try New Jersey,
    Joey try Oakland!

Well, Porter had 9 sacks last year…….. we’re none of them “meaningful”? ;-)
He’s 32 yrs old, so obviously his play has declined some, but a lot of players were give their left nut for a 9 sack season.

Joey has a mouth that has become more of an impact than his play on the field as of late. When he played the Saints he said “Our goal is to knock them off the high horse and try to bring them down,” Porter said Wednesday, per Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “They’ve been out in front of every game. They’ve scored a touchdown on every opening drive they’ve had.”
Yeah how did all that trash talking help you there buddy? Who is going to want a cancerous player in the locker room when he can’t even be a stout defender anymore?
    Can you say special teams?

    9 Sacks is Nothing Huh?…
He is a dipshit off the Field, but even at his age, he is still worth something….He may not get a Monster contract , but put him on the field with Jared Allen, and Toine Winfield, and that would make things interesting ….It would fun to see the Purple put that together……but oh, wait, its just a Rumor “Mill’….much like this whole site….

    @Ilovefoolsball:
Well, considering the Dolphins had a 20-point lead in that game at one point, I’d say he almost made good on his word. It takes more than one linebacker to take down the Super Saints.

The Steelers knew this three years ago.
They cut him loose and propmtly filled his spot with an undrafted free agent that they turned into the NFL defensive player of the year.

Cameron Wake. Peezey was made obsolete by a guy from the CFL.

Porter’s 9 sacks was his only saving grace. He also had the least amount of QB pressures per snap on the team. Oh yea, and he plays the run like a pansy. He would be a GREAT asset to a team as a situation pass rusher, his problem is that he won’t accept being a part time player… And that’s why he’ll end up in Oakland

Porter is on the decline. So I am happy the Fins have decided to decline to keep him

  15. drubatuba says: Feb 25, 2010 5:08 PM

JP is nothing more than a situational pass rusher at best. And he won’t acept that.He sucks on run plays and cannot play zone. Hes just lost the fire that he had last year. The spark is gone. Cam Wake is our guy. He needs some work in the same areas that Porter does but hes younger and hes got way more upside. If you watch the CFL or are a Fin Fan you know about Cam Wake. If your not you will know about him soon enough. :)

Porter is a friggin’ joke, and basically is just a washed up OLD player. I wouldn’t want him on my team!
    Welcome to the Oakland Raiders.
