Schwartz avoids question on Culpepper

One of the tricky parts of being here at the NFL Scouting Combine is finding time to peel away from the interviews to actually post items.

With most of the NFL coaches and personnel types done for the day, it’s time to start catching up.

One of the first questions I asked Thursday was about Florio’s favorite player of all time, Daunte Culpepper. Lions coach Jim Schwartz wouldn’t confirm whether he’s spoken with Culpepper recently.

“Well, we’re still not at free agency right now,” Schwartz said.  “Backup quarterback is important.  To have an experienced player behind [Matthew Stafford] is an important thing.”

Schwartz wanted to get a good look at “all that’s available” and said “we’re open to just about everything.”

It sounds like Culpepper is hardly a priority, but perhaps he’ll return if the Lions can’t do better.  (And I rank at six unrestricted free agent QBs as better.)

One thing in Culpepper’s favor: There are more teams that need backup quarterbacks than there are quality options available.

    culpepper blows
    20 tds
32 picks in the last 5 yrs
    6 rushing tds
    26 fumbles
qb rating of 71 in the last 5 yrs
Combine that with his ‘great’ Team 1st attitude
and boy hes sure who i want (and apparently NFL franchises as well) as a Backup qb.
every year its the same thing from Florio
He talks so glowingly about Dante that youd think
    he represents him.
Schwartz wont have him around and if the Lions dont find him worthy who will??
dont just make statements Florio, go on and say who you think might sign this overweight no good POS and make the ties between coaches, reasons why etc.

Quite a fall from grace from a guy who proclaimed he wanted to be the “best qb ever” from his days of glory in Minnesota with Moss and Carter. Goes to show you once he got away from that WR tandem he wasn’t much good.
And to think that Nick Saban in all his football wisdom passed on Drew Brees to get Culpepper, what a joke.

I like the Leos approach to this offseason by taking a step back and evaluating all alternatives, but there’s not much out there better than Culpepper. I’m sad just typing that last sentence.
It’s important to have a seasoned backup when the starter is relatively green. At least Culpepper has experienced success at some level, regardless of how that success was achieved. Please don’t target Boller or this bum…

I’m waiting for Florio’s story about how the Lions don’t want to keep CulPepper because he’s black .
