NFL's return to L.A. could be still a long way away

NFL-Los-Angeles-Football.jpgEven though Ed Roski appears to be closing in on luring a team to the nation’s No. 2 television market, the situation is far more complicated than the “if they come, we will build it” vibe that Roski and his cohorts have been sending out.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times recently broke down every angle of the issue, and the full article is worth a read.

(I usually say that when I’m simply too lazy to write anything more on the topic, but in this specific instance I mean it.  Read the whole thing.  You’ll be smarter when you’ve finished it.)

And allow us to add one wrinkle that Farmer didn’t mention.  (Cue the “but you said he broke down every angle, you douchebag” commenters.)  The L.A. issue usually moves toward the front burner when it’s time to renegotiate television contracts, since the networks would love to get saturation ratings 16 times per year in such a large market, assuming that the new stadium will be sold out.  The league typically has suggested urgency to return to L.A. in conjunction with those talks.  Sooner or later, the networks will expect their billions of dollars to trigger something more than just talk.

Look for it to happen if at all either with the deals that commence in 2014, or with the next round of negotiations for deals that could be starting in 2020.  Still, it’s an uphill climb for anything to happen soon.

IF L.A. is such a good football market then why in the hell have teams left in the past? I am totally ignorant to this and ask in all seriousness.

the condom company should buy the Trojans, name them into LA Trojans and they would be the first team with a sponsor in their name. get ready for San Diego Toyota, New York Starbucks, New England Gilette etc
by moving the Trojans to LA, that would guarantee one close game a season to the Raiders. but i doubt they would win this one with JaMarcus Compton umm JaRussell at jaQB u knw im saynnn thug

    @ Chapnasty2 – I couldn’t agree with someone more!
The Raiders left Oakland, to go to L.A. and now they are back in Oakland!
The Rams left Cleveland to go to L.A. and now they are in St. Louis, who in turn lost the Cardinals, that ended up in Phoenix!
The Browns moved to Baltimore in turn who became the Ravens, in which they lost their original team, better known as the Colts, in order to end up in Indianapolis!
I hate to say it, because the conferences are perfect – there are 4 teams in each division in each conference! It’s balanced!
But, the answer is expansion! The only way Los Angeles is going to be able to sustain a team, it has to be their original product.
I am tired of seeing teams move and/or relocate. It is unfair to the dedicated fan base! Hell if you want to put people in the stands, put a better product on the field and put some wins together, your fans deserve it.
Los Angeles needs to be accountable, chapnasty said it best, LA either needs an expansion team or no team at all!? For LA to get a relocated team is plain bogus, two other NFL teams did it and look at where they are, no longer in LA!

No matter what other people’s views about LA around the country, there’s no denying the #2 television market in the nation. People think that LA shouldn’t have a team, but there are plenty of hard nosed football lovin people in and around LA. Not to mention this stadium is not going to be built even in LA, actually closer to Riverside county, more towards the residential areas where people love to watch them some football.
And just to bring this up a bit. I was at Starbucks near the stadium and one of the guys close to Roski came in for his usual cup of coffee. He said that the word around is if LA does get a team they’ll either keep it the original name of the team they brought in or a name that has been coming up is the “Los Angeles Attack”. Sounds……eh……well like a Arena team to me.

Why do so many people think that LA needs a team?
We just saw a SB being the most viewed event in TV history – with TWO “small market” teams.
LA didn’t support the two teams it once had, why would anyone think that the future would be any different?

  25. purpleguy says: Feb 26, 2010 10:34 AM

None of the posters above must have read the LA Times article, which lists the Chargers as the most likely choice. In MN there are several stadium funding options circulating around the legislature, and even the tightass governor has suggested alternatives. They won’t get anything done this year, but next year a stadium funding alternative will be reality. The Vikes ain’t going anywhere. They’ll be around to make the cheesers miserable for years to come.

  26. iusedtobeteddybayer says: Feb 26, 2010 10:35 AM

The most important item here is that ‘lil Napoleon Florio has clearly given approval to the term, “douchebag”, as in, hey, Napoleon Florio: you are a douchebag.
Has it mattered to ANYONE that LA has no team? Has anything in the past 10 seasons lacked a thing because Los Angeles has no team. No one cares except those who can make a buck.

  27. imanidiotiguess says: Feb 26, 2010 10:40 AM

    goodjuan-
no way they move an AFC team to the NFC if the Vikings moved west. The obvious choice would be sending the vikings to the NFC west and the rams from the NFC west to the North. Wow the NFC North would be a powerhouse then; Packers, Bears, Rams and Lions …..lol

  28. Ollie says: Feb 26, 2010 10:51 AM

I would hate to see the Vikings go to LA. The purple Vikings belong in the great north. Jacksonville should move there!

  29. Rick says: Feb 26, 2010 10:54 AM

They had two different franchises in LA and the TV ratings didn’t do anything. NFL fans in LA are still watching the games so having a team there will not bring in more viewers. The most logical choice would be to move the Chargers there. They are already in So Cal so it wouldn’t be like San Diego fans couldn’t go see their team

  30. tombrookshire says: Feb 26, 2010 10:56 AM

Hey gang, who wants an NFL franchise in L.A.? (silence, except for the sound of crickets churping).

  31. tombrookshire says: Feb 26, 2010 10:59 AM

Just thought of this, the new stadium should be about 24,000 seats so to be sure that it can accommodate all the NFL fans in L.A. and then about 12,000 more.

  32. sand0 says: Feb 26, 2010 11:01 AM

Hilarious how many “move the Vikes” comments there are even in an article pointing out how highly unlikely it would be to happen.
Usually Minnesota teams don’t draw a lot of hate. That is more of a Boston/New York/Texas thing. But absolutely devastating our top rival last year using their hero has really changed the landscape…
Keep the posts coming. It will make it that much more satisfying in a couple years when the headline is “Vikings get stadium deal done”.

  33. Ollie says: Feb 26, 2010 11:08 AM

Rick, not a bad idea. There are too many teams in California anyway.

  34. Gelardia says: Feb 26, 2010 11:17 AM

Just upgrade the Coliseum, assassinate Al Davis and move the Raiders back to LA. The 49ers are Northern California’s team anyway, that market won’t be effected.

  35. JaredSlansky says: Feb 26, 2010 11:36 AM

    What a cool looking stadium

  36. Otto7448 says: Feb 26, 2010 11:39 AM

After reading the article; the LA option is dead. Roski want’s to buy a team, donate the land, and publically finance a stadium.
There are several problems Roski has.
    1. He owns a casino; so, by leauge rules he can’t own any part of a team.
    2. They need public financing to build an $800 million dollar stadium and I don’t think California is in any postion to finance the stadium considering they are hemoraging cash and are writting IOU’s to every creditior. Not to mention 20% plus of thier budget goes to housing criminals (or Raiders fans if you will).
    3. That leaves a group of Millinoaire’s that need to pony up for the land, stadium and a team to the tune of $2 billion dollars to earn what $50 mil a year. Millionares made their money by being smart. They could make far more money by investing in small yeild CD’s than buying a team.
Much less leveraging themselves for something that has failed multiple times already.
All Roski has is acres of dirt, lots of man hours and a wish.

Regardless which school of grammar Chickenfoot went to, “turs” appears to be a misspelling of “turds.” That is not a grammatical error. As a Packer fan, you are excused for not knowing that.

  38. Brian Moore1 says: Feb 26, 2010 11:56 AM

    1. @champnasty2: It’s a good question, and having grown up in LA, my educated guesses are: A) NFL teams have always been choice #3 after the more dominating Dodger and Laker franchises; LA just isn’t the sports town New York is. B) Maybe even choice #4 after USC. C) The Coliseum has always been a lousy place to see a pro game. People let bench seating slide for college games. They don’t for pro games. D) The crowds for Raiders games were particularly unpleasant.
    2. Hasn’t it served individual NFL teams well to pull out the LA card whenever they’re blackmailing cities to help bankroll a new stadium? That’s a pretty big negotiating card to lose, and since a minority of owners can block any deal to put a franchise in LA, that’s a serious impediment.

The Rams were in Los Angeles for about 50 years. Ms. Frontiere ran the team in to the ground over their last 4 years in Los Angeles. Then she moved them to St. Louis where she was from.
Guys, please don’t base Los Angeles’ ability to support an NFL team on a selfish woman’s desires. 50 years speaks for itself.
The Raiders… They had no fan base in Los Angeles. When they won people went to the games. Since they had no base, once they started losing nobody cared about them.
What Frontiere did to the Rams fans should never be forgotten, forgiven or dignified by giving it any historical reference other than as an example of manipulative selfishness for cash and glamor.
