Dominik clarifies Myron Rolle "deserter" question

081122-rolle-vlg-8p.widec.jpgOn Thursday, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported that a member of the Buccaneers’ Senior Bowl entourage asked Florida State safety Myron Rolle “what it felt like to desert his team.”

On Friday, Buccaneers G.M. Mark Dominik told Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune (again via JoeBucsFan.com) that the question was this:  “Did you feel like you deserted your team?

Even if Dominik’s version is accurate, any time a question of that nature is asked, there’s a chance that the guy to whom the question is posed won’t get the wording exactly right when replaying it in his mind.

The tone used also could be a factor in this regard.

Bottom line?  Rolle emerged from the room thinking that he was asked, “Do you feel like you deserted your team?”  It’s the team’s obligation to make sure the message gets across accurately.  If it doesn’t, then the team failed.

    ========================
Hmmmm……Rhodes scholar who is studying medicine and is very not very likely to “misremember” (thank you, Mr. Clemens) how a simple question was phrased versus and NFL GM doing spin control.
    Advantage, Mr. Rolle.

  2. Stop it with the Myron Rolle stories. Great student, mediocre football player. I’m proud of him for being a great human being, but this is a football website. Rolle had very little impact at FSU and has absolutely zero football instincts.

  3. Actually, I think Rolle emerged from the room thinking that he was asked, “How does it feel to desert your team?”
Not a big deal, just would require you to read this stuff once before posting.

  4. They didn’t need to ask that question to know that Rolle is not going to fit the player micro-manager/paranoid mindset of NFL coaches want on their teams.
They are probably afraid he’s smarter than them. And you know what? Clearly he is. He’s smarter than 99.9% of all of us.
    And good for him.

  5. As a Miami Hurricane, I still must say that everyone is giving Myron Rolle a raw deal. How can anyone put him down for accepting a Rhodes Scholarship? Also, how did he desert his team any more than someone who leaves early for the NFL Draft? Myron was a bright spot that transcended a team that was filled with kids recently deemed mentally retarded ( http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/12362828 ). I wish him the best of luck and I’m sure he will be immensely successful whether its in pads or a lab coat. Good for him.

  6. Mountains vs molehills.
Rhodes scholar can’t remember the exact wording of the question?
Who is putting spin on who?
Blown way out by the media.
    So what’s new?

  7. Regardless of what anyone on this site says or thinks, whomever takes the chance on Rolle in the 5th is getting a steal. An athlete with a work ethic that is a Rhodes genius? No doubt the the kid can learn any defense the league has to offer and has the talent to play in any defense as well.
Cleveland needs a Safety, I would for sure take him!

  8. Bottom line ? No matter how it is worded or understood, it’s a dumbass question. If I were Rolle, I would have got up and left.

  9. Wasn’t Rolle the top high school football player coming out, if he wasn’t he was in the top 5.. this kid can play, and he’s smart.. if he doesn’t make it in the NFL, he doesn’t make it, it happens but he has a bright future, congrats to him.

  10. No doubt the the kid can learn any defense the league has to offer and has the talent to play in any defense as well.
he can likely design his own defense

  11. So if he can’t handle this question, how is he going to handle playing in the NFL, where Hines Ward (stupidly, but it happens nonetheless) calls out Ben Roethlisberger for not playing with a concussion? I think it’s a great question to ask, and I think Rolle’s reaction shows this. If the kid can be offended that easily, better to find out before you pay him.
Just to clarify, I don’t think Rolle has anything to be ashamed of, but 53 people are not always going to agree on a decision. If someone asks him why he did something, he needs to be able to say he did it because it was the right thing to do. Not “wahhh!”

  12. Maybe after Myron becomes a neurosurgeon he can implant a brain in Mark Dominik’s head.
This is the same moron that hired Raheem Morris after all. He’s certainly not one of the NFL’s brightest lights.

  13. It’s why TB will suck. They would rather play games with players than evaluate their play. Ask inflamatory questions. It surprises me that he wasn’t asked “Do you still beat your wife”? Some NFL GMs shouldn’t even be running a Pop Warner team.

  14. He didnt desert his team, he did what your supposed to do in college and thats to be a Student Athlete. Key word Student. You dont turn down the Rhodes Scholarship for anyone. Once football is over you need a real Career. Most athletes blow their money and at least he has something to fall back on.

  15. What a disgusting realization that these teams and personell are acting like this kid did a huge dis service by using his free education to get a …..education. This really is a sick sport if we the viewer really understood it it seems.
