Ryan wants to give Gholston more playing time

Rex Ryan spent all last offseason building up linebacker Vernon Gholston, only to be let down once the season started.  But he’s not giving up.

Ryan said Gholston deserved more playing time.  “When we are going back and looking at our cut ups and things like that, I think this young man deserves a better chance than we are giving him. We need to give him more playing time,”  Ryan said Saturday.

So much for possibly releasing him.

With that said, Ryan agreed with a statement that this was a make or break season for the sixth overall pick of the 2007 draft.

“Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.”

I sort of feel bad for Gholston. It is not his fault that teams fell in love with his workouts, he did what was asked and produced great results in the combine. Everyone can’t be good or great. For every Ryan Leaf, JaLatinous Russell, and Lawrence Phillips there is a Tom Brady, London Fletcher, Joe Montana, or Priest Holmes out there. Gholston is just not that good a player, bottom line.

Since Gholston has already received $21 mill, it makes sense for the Jets to keep him and see if a second year in Rex’s system turns on a light switch.
If it doesn’t, couldn’t the Jets just cut bait in-season (toward the end of the year), have the remaining years hit this uncapped season, and get out of the remainder of the contract?

    Ghlosten = underwear model.
Jason Pierre-Paul will also be one.

I’d like to see Rex Ryan at about 240 lbs.
What are the chances that happens?
Bout the same as Gholston ever playing in the NFL.
Sounds like Rex is hoping to build him up… to trade him.

Goldston has no chance of succeeding in that system – but because they invested so much in him they are going to hold on to him and ruin any chance of a career he might have.
Put him on the Colts, Bears, or Vikings as a rushing DE and he would probably be fine.
He is NOT a 3-4 OLB or 3-4 DE.

He might do better as a rush end in a 4-3 playing next to some big D tackels

is he nuts? that or Vernon Gholston is giving his (future) foot stamps to Rex in exchange for that
as a Fins fan i love the idea because Gholston might have a body like a greek god but he is weak, doesnt like to hit and fears contact

Watch Mangini offer the 7th pick to the Jets for him. We have half of his old team as it is.

Im a USF Fan and have seen plenty of JPP. Ill be the first to admit people are hyping him up too much and i myself will say that it would not be wise to draft him with a 1st round pick. Its more due to the fact that hes only played 1 year of div 1 football and i like to see a player start for multiple years before i would invest a 1st rounder on him. That being said. JPP is no Vernon Gholston. He will be better than him. I know thats not saying much though.. lol

I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.
Right off the team the following year.

Somebody needs to light a fire under this guys rear end. There is no reason for a top 10 pick to stink. It is all in his work ethic. He got money and prob. eats Doritos in the offseason

only thing gholston should be playing is cards.

One big problem I have with this article. Gholston was drafted in 08 not 07. He has only played 2 years so one more is fair for a #6 pick. But yeah he will probably become a contributor one day for a 4-3 team all the while screwing over the Jets
